Strong Converse Bounds for Compression of Mixed States

Abstract

In this paper, we study strong converse properties for both visible and blind compression of mixed states. The optimal rate of a visible compression scheme is obtained in terms of the entanglement of purification, whose additivity remains unknown so far. For a variation of extendible states, we prove that the entanglement of purification is additive and apply this to obtain a "pretty strong" converse bound for the blind and visible compression of such states. Namely, when the rate decreases below the optimal rate, the error exhibits a discontinuous jump from 0 to at least $\frac{1}{3\sqrt{2}}$. To deal with the visible case for general states, we define a new quantity $E_{α,p}(A:R)_ρ$ for a bipartite state $ρ^{AR}$ and $α\in (0,1)\cup (1,\infty)$ as the $α$-Rényi generalization of the entanglement of purification $E_{p}(A:R)_ρ$. For $α=1$, we define $E_{1,p}(A:R)_ρ:=E_{p}(A:R)_ρ$. We show that for any rate below the regularization $\lim_{α\to 1^+}E_{α,p}^{\infty}(A:R)_ρ:=\lim_{α\to 1^+} \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{E_{α,p}(A^n:R^n)_{ρ^{\otimes n}}}{n}$ the fidelity for the visible compression exponentially converges to zero. Moreover, we consider blind compression of a general mixed-state source $ρ^{AR}$ shared between an encoder and an inaccessible reference system $R$. We obtain a strong converse bound for the compression of this source by assuming that the decoder is a super-unital channel. This immediately implies a strong converse for the blind compression of ensembles of mixed states, by assuming a super-unital decoder, as this is a special case of the general mixed-state source $ρ^{AR}$ where the reference system $R$ has a classical structure.

Exponential strong converse for blind quantum data compression

Kohdai Kuroiwa

We establish exponential strong converse theorems for blind quantum data compression of finite-dimensional mixed-state sources, with and without entanglement assistance. Blind compression is a fundamental quantum information processing task in which the sender aims to transmit quantum states without direct access to the classical label. Strong converse is a notable aspect of data compression: the accuracy of the compression abruptly drops down to zero once the compression rate goes below a threshold. Strong converses for data compression have been established for pure-state sources; however, for mixed-state sources, the optimal compression rate is determined by a structural decomposition of quantum states and can change substantially under small perturbations. This sensitivity makes it difficult to quantitatively analyze the trade-off between compression rate and error. Despite recent progress, whether a strong converse holds at the optimal rate has remained unresolved in general. In this work, we resolve this question affirmatively. For unassisted compression, we show that at every rate below the optimum, the accuracy decays exponentially with the block length for general mixed-state sources without restrictions on protocols. We also prove exponential strong converse for blind compression with unlimited entanglement assistance at its optimal rate. Combining the two strong converse bounds yields exponential decay at every compression-entanglement rate pair outside the complete achievable rate region. Our proof introduces a new overlap quantity based on the structure of quantum states; this quantity connects preservation of the source information to the dimension of the transmitted system. We expect that this approach provides useful tools for converse analyses of other quantum information-processing tasks involving mixed states.

Rate-Distortion Theory for Mixed States

Zahra Baghali Khanian, Kohdai Kuroiwa, Debbie Leung

This paper is concerned with quantum data compression of asymptotically many independent and identically distributed copies of ensembles of mixed quantum states. The encoder has access to a side information system. The figure of merit is per-copy or local error criterion. Rate-distortion theory studies the trade-off between the compression rate and the per-copy error. The optimal trade-off can be characterized by the rate-distortion function, which is the best rate given a certain distortion. In this paper, we derive the rate-distortion function of mixed-state compression. The rate-distortion functions in the entanglement-assisted and unassisted scenarios are in terms of a single-letter mutual information quantity and the regularized entanglement of purification, respectively. For the general setting where the consumption of both communication and entanglement are considered, we present the full qubit-entanglement rate region. Our compression scheme covers both blind and visible compression models (and other models in between) depending on the structure of the side information system.

Rate-Distortion Theory for Mixed States

Zahra Baghali Khanian, Kohdai Kuroiwa, Debbie Leung

In this paper we consider the compression of asymptotically many i.i.d. copies of ensembles of mixed quantum states where the encoder has access to a side information system. This source is equivalently defined as a classical-quantum state, namely, a quantum system correlated with a classical system playing the role of an inaccessible reference system. The figure of merit is evaluated based on per-copy or local error criterion. The rate-distortion theory aims to reveal the trade-off between the compression rate and the per-copy error. The optimal trade-off can be characterized by the rate-distortion function, which is the best rate given a certain distortion. In this paper, we analyze the rate-distortion functions of mixed-state compression. We find the rate-distortion functions in the entanglement-assisted and unassisted scenarios, in terms of a single-letter mutual information quantity and the regularized entanglement of purification, respectively.

Additivity Results for the Rényi-2 Entanglement of Purification

Shokoufe Faraji, Zahra Baghali Khanian

We reformulate the Rényi entanglement of purification as a constrained minimum output Rényi entropy problem. Equivalently, for $p>1$, this formulation can be expressed in terms of a constrained maximal output Schatten $p$-norm. More precisely, for a completely positive map $Ω:L(B')\to L(A)$, we consider the quantity $\upsilon_p(Ω)$ defined by optimizing $\|(Ω\otimes \mathrm{id}_E)(σ^{B'E})\|_p$ over all bipartite states $σ^{B'E}$ whose $B'$-marginal is maximally mixed. We focus on the case $p=2$. First, we compute $\upsilon_2$ for the transpose-depolarizing channel and prove that it is multiplicative under tensor powers. We then establish a general multiplicativity criterion: whenever a completely positive map $N:L(B')\to L(A)$ satisfies $N^{\dagger} \mathbin{\circ} N=a\,\mathrm{id}_A+b\,\mathrm{Tr}[\cdot]\,I_d$ for some constants $a,b\ge 0$, where $N^{\dagger}$ denotes the Hilbert-Schmidt adjoint of $N$, the quantity $\upsilon_2(N)$ is multiplicative under tensor powers. Examples of channels satisfying this criterion include the transpose-depolarizing channel, the depolarizing channel, and their respective complementary channels. Furthermore, we show that, for every completely positive map $Ω$, multiplicativity of $\upsilon_p(Ω)$ implies multiplicativity for its complementary map. This yields the corresponding additivity statements for the associated Rényi-2 entanglement of purification.

General Mixed-State Quantum Data Compression With and Without Entanglement Assistance

Zahra Baghali Khanian, Andreas Winter

We consider the most general finite-dimensional quantum mechanical information source, which is given by a quantum system$A$that is correlated with a reference system$R$. The task is to compress$A$in such a way as to reproduce the joint source state$\rho ^{AR}$at the decoder with asymptotically high fidelity. This includes Schumacher’s original quantum source coding problem of a pure state ensemble and that of a single pure entangled state, as well as general mixed state ensembles. Here, we determine the optimal compression rate (in qubits per source system) in terms of the Koashi-Imoto decomposition of the source into a classical, a quantum, and a redundant part. The same decomposition yields the optimal rate in the presence of unlimited entanglement between compressor and decoder, and indeed the full region of feasible qubit-ebit rate pairs.
