Abstract

Abstract We study the entanglement entropies of an interval adjacent to the boundary of the half line for the free fermionic spinless Schrödinger field theory at finite density and zero temperature, with either Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. They are finite functions of the dimensionless parameter given by the product of the Fermi momentum and the length of the interval. The entanglement entropy displays an oscillatory behaviour, differently from the case of the interval on the whole line. This behaviour is related to the Friedel oscillations of the mean particle density on the half line at the entangling point. We find analytic expressions for the expansions of the entanglement entropies in the regimes of small and large values of the dimensionless parameter. They display a remarkable agreement with the curves obtained numerically. The analysis is extended to a family of free fermionic Lifshitz models labelled by their integer Lifshitz exponent, whose parity determines the properties of the entanglement entropies. The cumulants of the local charge operator and the Schatten norms of the underlying kernels are also explored.

Entanglement entropies of an interval in the free Schrödinger field theory at finite density

Mihail Mintchev, Diego Pontello, Alberto Sartori +1 more

Abstract We study the entanglement entropies of an interval on the infinite line in the free fermionic spinless Schrödinger field theory at finite density and zero temperature, which is a non-relativistic model with Lifshitz exponent z = 2. We prove that the entanglement entropies are finite functions of one dimensionless parameter proportional to the area of a rectangular region in the phase space determined by the Fermi momentum and the length of the interval. The entanglement entropy is a monotonically increasing function. By employing the properties of the prolate spheroidal wave functions of order zero or the asymptotic expansions of the tau function of the sine kernel, we find analytic expressions for the expansions of the entanglement entropies in the asymptotic regimes of small and large area of the rectangular region in the phase space. These expansions lead to prove that the analogue of the relativistic entropic C function is not monotonous. Extending our analyses to a class of free fermionic Lifshitz models labelled by their integer dynamical exponent z, we find that the parity of this exponent determines the properties of the bipartite entanglement for an interval on the line.

Entanglement entropies of an interval for the massless scalar field in the presence of a boundary

Benoit Estienne, Yacine Ikhlef, Andrei Rotaru +1 more

A bstract We study the entanglement entropies of an interval for the massless compact boson either on the half line or on a finite segment, when either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions are imposed. In these boundary conformal field theory models, the method of the branch point twist fields is employed to obtain analytic expressions for the two-point functions of twist operators. In the decompactification regime, these analytic predictions in the continuum are compared with the lattice numerical results in massless harmonic chains for the corresponding entanglement entropies, finding good agreement. The application of these analytic results in the context of quantum quenches is also discussed.

Entanglement and negativity Hamiltonians for the massless Dirac field on the half line

Federico Rottoli, Sara Murciano, Erik Tonni C +1 more

Abstract We study the ground-state entanglement Hamiltonian of several disjoint intervals for the massless Dirac fermion on the half-line. Its structure consists of a local part and a bi-local term that couples each point to another one in each other interval. The bi-local operator can be either diagonal or mixed in the fermionic chiralities and it is sensitive to the boundary conditions. The knowledge of such entanglement Hamiltonian is the starting point to evaluate the negativity Hamiltonian, i.e. the logarithm of the partially transposed reduced density matrix, which is an operatorial characterisation of entanglement of subsystems in mixed states. We find that the negativity Hamiltonian inherits the structure of the corresponding entanglement Hamiltonian. We finally show how the continuum expressions for both these operators can be recovered from exact numerical computations in free-fermion chains.

Aspects of quantum information in finite density field theory

Lucas Daguerre, Raimel A. Medina, Mario Solís +1 more

Abstract We study different aspects of quantum field theory at finite density using methods from quantum information theory. For simplicity we focus on massive Dirac fermions with nonzero chemical potential, and work in 1 + 1 space-time dimensions. Using the entanglement entropy on an interval, we construct an entropic c-function that is finite. Unlike what happens in Lorentz-invariant theories, this c-function exhibits a strong violation of monotonicity; it also encodes the creation of long-range entanglement from the Fermi surface. Motivated by previous works on lattice models, we next calculate numerically the Renyi entropies and find Friedel-type oscillations; these are understood in terms of a defect operator product expansion. Furthermore, we consider the mutual information as a measure of correlation functions between different regions. Using a long-distance expansion previously developed by Cardy, we argue that the mutual information detects Fermi surface correlations already at leading order in the expansion. We also analyze the relative entropy and its Renyi generalizations in order to distinguish states with different charge and/or mass. In particular, we show that states in different superselection sectors give rise to a super-extensive behavior in the relative entropy. Finally, we discuss possible extensions to interacting theories, and argue for the relevance of some of these measures for probing non-Fermi liquids.

Area law for the entanglement entropy of the free Fermi gas at nonzero temperature

Hajo Leschke, Alexander V. Sobolev, Wolfgang Spitzer

The leading asymptotic large-scale behavior of the spatially bipartite entanglement entropy (EE) of the free Fermi gas infinitely extended in multidimensionsal Euclidean space at zero absolute temperature, T=0, is by now well understood. Here, we announce and discuss the first rigorous results for the corresponding EE of thermal equilibrium states at T>0. The leading large-scale term of this thermal EE turns out to be twice the leading finite-size correction to the infinite-volume thermal entropy (density). Not surprisingly, this correction is just the thermal entropy on the boundary surface of the bipartition. However, it is given by a rather complicated analytical expression derived from semiclassical functional calculus and differs, at least at high temperature, from simpler expressions previously obtained by arguments based on conformal field theory. In the zero-temperature limit, the leading large-scale term of the thermal EE considerably simplifies and displays a ln(1/T)-singularity which one may identify with the known logarithmic correction at T=0 to the so-called area-law scaling. Our results extend to the whole one-parameter family of (quantum) R\'enyi entropies.

A contour for the entanglement entropies in harmonic lattices

Andrea Coser, Cristiano De Nobili, Erik Tonni C

Abstract We construct a contour function for the entanglement entropies in generic harmonic lattices. In one spatial dimension, numerical analysis are performed by considering harmonic chains with either periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the massless regime and for some configurations where the subsystem is a single interval, the numerical results for the contour function are compared to the inverse of the local weight function which multiplies the energy-momentum tensor in the corresponding entanglement hamiltonian, found through conformal field theory methods, and a good agreement is observed. A numerical analysis of the contour function for the entanglement entropy is performed also in a massless harmonic chain for a subsystem made by two disjoint intervals.
