Universal Properties of Partial Quantum Maps

Abstract

We provide a universal construction of the category of finite-dimensional C*-algebras and completely positive trace-nonincreasing maps from the rig category of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and unitaries. This construction, which can be applied to any dagger rig category, is described in three steps, each associated with their own universal property, and draws on results from dilation theory in finite dimension. In this way, we explicitly construct the category that captures hybrid quantum/classical computation with possible nontermination from the category of its reversible foundations. We discuss how this construction can be used in the design and semantics of quantum programming languages.

Categories of Quantum and Classical Channels (extended abstract)

Bob Coecke, Chris Heunen, Aleks Kissinger

We introduce the CP*-construction on a dagger compact closed category as a generalisation of Selinger's CPM-construction. While the latter takes a dagger compact closed category and forms its category of "abstract matrix algebras" and completely positive maps, the CP*-construction forms its category of "abstract C*-algebras" and completely positive maps. This analogy is justified by the case of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, where the CP*-construction yields the category of finite-dimensional C*-algebras and completely positive maps. The CP*-construction fully embeds Selinger's CPM-construction in such a way that the objects in the image of the embedding can be thought of as "purely quantum" state spaces. It also embeds the category of classical stochastic maps, whose image consists of "purely classical" state spaces. By allowing classical and quantum data to coexist, this provides elegant abstract notions of preparation, measurement, and more general quantum channels.

Complete Positivity for Mixed Unitary Categories

Robin Cockett, Priyaa Varshinee Srinivasan

Coecke and Heunen described completely positive maps in dagger monoidal categories and the {\sf CP}-infinity construction on these categories in order to construct a category of arbitrary dimensional quantum processes. This article generalizes the ${\sf CP}$-infinity construction of dagger monoidal categories to mixed unitary categories. Mixed unitary categories, on the one hand, generalize the (compact) dagger monoidal categories, and on the other hand, accommodate arbitrary dimensional quantum processes, both without sacrificing the notion of dual objects. This means that the ${\sf CP}$-infinity construction for mixed unitary categories provides a suitable semantics for higher-order quantum programming languages which employ arbitrary dimensional structures. The existing results for the ${\sf CP}$-infinity construction are shown to generalize to the new setting. In particular, the notion of environment structures generalizes to mixed unitary categories and it is shown that the ${\sf CP}$-infinity construction for mixed unitary categories is characterized by this generalized environment structure.

Semantics for a Quantum Programming Language by Operator Algebras

Kenta Cho

This paper presents a novel semantics for a quantum programming language by operator algebras, which are known to give a formulation for quantum theory that is alternative to the one by Hilbert spaces. We show that the opposite category of the category of W*-algebras and normal completely positive subunital maps is an elementary quantum flow chart category in the sense of Selinger. As a consequence, it gives a denotational semantics for Selinger's first-order functional quantum programming language QPL. The use of operator algebras allows us to accommodate infinite structures and to handle classical and quantum computations in a unified way.

H*-algebras and nonunital Frobenius algebras: first steps in infinite-dimensional categorical quantum mechanics

Chris Heunen

A certain class of Frobenius algebras has been used to characterize orthonormal bases and observables on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. The presence of units in these algebras means that they can only be realized finite-dimensionally. We seek a suitable generalization, which will allow arbitrary bases and observables to be described within categorical axiomatizations of quantum mechanics. We develop a definition of H*-algebra that can be interpreted in any symmetric monoidal dagger category, reduces to the classical notion from functional analysis in the category of (possibly infinite-dimensional) Hilbert spaces, and hence provides a categorical way to speak about orthonormal bases and quantum observables in arbitrary dimension. Moreover, these algebras reduce to the usual notion of Frobenius algebra in compact categories. We then investigate the relations between nonunital Frobenius algebras and H*algebras. We give a number of equivalent conditions to characterize when they coincide in the category of Hilbert spaces. We also show that they always coincide in categories of generalized relations and positive matrices.

Quantum information effects

Chris Heunen, Robin Kaarsgaard

We study the two dual quantum information effects to manipulate the amount of information in quantum computation: hiding and allocation. The resulting type-and-effect system is fully expressive for irreversible quantum computing, including measurement. We provide universal categorical constructions that semantically interpret this arrow metalanguage with choice, starting with any rig groupoid interpreting the reversible base language. Several properties of quantum measurement follow in general, and we translate (noniterative) quantum flow charts into our language. The semantic constructions turn the category of unitaries between Hilbert spaces into the category of completely positive trace-preserving maps, and they turn the category of bijections between finite sets into the category of functions with chosen garbage. Thus they capture the fundamental theorems of classical and quantum reversible computing of Toffoli and Stinespring.
