Abstract

Thermal transport in condensed matter systems is traditionally formulated as a response to a background gravitational field. In this work, we seek a twisted-boundary-condition formalism for thermal transport in analogy to the U(1) twisted boundary condition for electrical transport. Specifically, using the transfer matrix formalism, we introduce what we call the energy-twisted boundary condition, and study the response of the system to the boundary condition. As specific examples, we obtain the thermal Meissner stiffness of (1+1)-dimensional CFT, the Ising model, and disordered fermion models. We also identify the boost deformation of integrable systems as a bulk counterpart of the energy-twisted boundary condition. We show that the boost deformation of the free fermion chain can be solved explicitly by solving the inviscid Burgers equation. We also discuss the boost deformation of the XXZ model, and its nonlinear thermal Drude weights, by studying the boost-deformed Bethe ansatz equations.

Twisted-Boundary-Condition Formalism for Thermal Transport and an Application to the One-Dimensional XY Spin Chain

Ryota Nakai, Taozhi Guo, Shinsei Ryu

We introduce and formulate the boundary condition twisted by the energy (time translation) in onedimensional quantum many-body systems. The stiffness against this boundary condition quantifies thermal analogues of the Drude weight and the Meissner stiffness. We apply this formalism to the one-dimensional quantum XY spin chain and estimate the thermal Meissner stiffness.

Twisted Boundary Conditions and Effective Mass in Heisenberg-Ising and Hubbard Rings

B. Sriram Shastry, Bill Sutherland

We identify the boundary energy of a many-body system of fermions on a lattice under twisted boundary conditions as the inverse of the effective charge-carrying mass, or the stiffness, renormalizing nontrivially under interactions due to the absence of Galilean invariance. We point out that this quantity is a sensitive and direct probe of the metal-insulator transitions possible in these systems, i.e., the Mott-Hubbard transition or Density-wave formation. We calculate exactly the stiffness, or the effective mass, in the 1D Heisenberg-Ising ring and the 1D Hubbard model by using the ansatz of Bethe. For the Hubbard ring we also calculate a spin stiffness by extending the nested ansatz of Bethe-Yang to this case.

Adiabatic transport in one-dimensional systems with a single defect

Kazuaki Takasan, Masaki Oshikawa, Haruki Watanabe

The adiabatic transport properties of U(1) invariant systems are determined by the dependence of the ground state energy on the twisted boundary condition. We examine a one-dimensional tight-binding model in the presence of a single defect and find that the ground state energy of the model shows a universal dependence on the twist angle that can be fully characterized by the transmission coefficient of the scattering by the defect. We identify resulting pathological behaviors of Drude weights in the large system size limit: (i) both the linear and nonlinear Drude weights depend on the twist angle and (ii) the $N$-th order Drude weight diverges proportionally to the $(N-1)$-th power of the system size. To clarify the physical implication of the divergence, we simulate the real-time dynamics of the tight-binding model under a static electric field and show that the divergence does not necessarily imply the large current. Furthermore, we address the relation between our results and the boundary conformal field theory.

2002 Spectrum of a duality–twisted Ising quantum chain

Uwe Grimm

Abstract. The Ising quantum chain with a peculiar twisted boundary condition is considered. This boundary condition, first introduced in the framework of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg quantum chain, is related to the duality transformation, which becomes a symmetry of the model at the critical point. Thus, at the critical point, the Ising quantum chain with the duality-twisted boundary is translationally invariant, similar as in the case of the usual periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions. The complete energy spectrum of the Ising quantum chain is calculated analytically for finite systems, and the conformal properties of the scaling limit are investigated. This provides an explicit example of a conformal twisted boundary condition and a corresponding generalised twisted partition function. Exact ground state and elementary excitations of a competing spin chain with twisted boundary condition

Wei Wang, Yi Qiao, Junpeng Cao +2 more

A novel Bethe ansatz scheme is proposed to investigate the exact physical properties of an integrable anisotropic quantum spin chain with competing interactions among the nearest, next nearest neighbor and chiral three spin couplings, where the boundary condition is the twisted one. The eigenvalue of the transfer matrix is characterized by its zero roots instead of the traditional Bethe roots. Based on the exact solution, the conserved momentum and charge operators of this U(1)-symmetry broken system are obtained. The ground state energy and density of rapidities are calculated. It is found that there exist three kinds of elementary excitations and the corresponding dispersion relations are obtained, which gives a different picture from that with periodic boundary condition.
