Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we initiate the study of operator local quenches in non-conformal field theories. We consider the dynamics of excited local states in massive scalar field theory in an arbitrary spacetime dimension and generalize the well-known two-dimensional CFT results. We derive the energy density, U(1)-charge density and ϕ2(x)-condensate post-quench dynamics, and identify different regimes of their evolution depending on the values of the field mass and the quench regularization parameter. For local quenches in higher-dimensional free massless scalar theories, we reproduce the structure of the available holographic results. We also investigate the local quenches in massive scalar field theory on a cylinder and show that they cause an erratic and chaotic-like evolution of observables with a complicated localization/delocalization pattern.

Universality in fast quantum quenches

Sumit R. Das, Damián A. Galante, Robert C. Myers

We expand on the investigation of the universal scaling properties in the early time behaviour of fast but smooth quantum quenches in a general d-dimensional conformal field theory deformed by a relevant operator of dimension Δ with a time-dependent coupling. The quench consists of changing the coupling from an initial constant value λ 1 by an amount of the order of δλ to some other final value λ 2, over a time scale δt. In the fast quench limit where δt is smaller than all other length scales in the problem, δt ≪ λ 1 1/() , λ 2 1/() , δλ 1/(Δ − d), the energy (density) injected into the system scales as δℰ ∼ (δλ)2(δt) d− 2Δ . Similarly, the change in the expectation value of the quenched operator at times earlier than the endpoint of the quench scales as $$ \left\langle {\mathcal{O}}_{\varDelta}\right\rangle \sim \delta \lambda {{\left(\delta t\right)}^d}^{-2\varDelta } $$ , with further logarithmic enhancements in certain cases. While these results were first found in holographic studies, we recently demonstrated that precisely the same scaling appears in fast mass quenches of free scalar and free fermionic field theories. As we describe in detail, the universal scaling refers to renormalized quantities, in which the UV divergent pieces are consistently renormalized away by subtracting counterterms derived with an adiabatic expansion. We argue that this scaling law is a property of the conformal field theory at the UV fixed point, valid for arbitrary relevant deformations and insensitive to the details of the quench protocol. Our results highlight the difference between smooth fast quenches and instantaneous quenches where the Hamiltonian abruptly changes at some time.

Higher-dimensional chaotic features and random matrix signatures following a local quench

Dmitry S. Ageev, Jacob Sonnenschein

We study the multidimensional erratic structure of correlation functions produced by local operator quenches in finite-volume free massive scalar field theory in dimensions 2 and 3. The basic observable is the subtracted equal-time two-point function in the locally excited state and its spatiotemporal patterns of extrema. We analyze these extrema by the multidimensional diagnostics recently introduced for chaotic scattering amplitudes and related problems: all-pair distance distributions, nearest-neighbor spacings, greedy-path spacing ratios, and the extrema form factor. For the $1+1$-dimensional local quench we find that, in the regime of small Euclidean smearing, the fitted extremum statistics move close to the $β=1$ random-matrix benchmark, while increasing the smearing scale softens the effective repulsion and moves the distributions away from the GOE-like value. For the $2+1$-dimensional local quench we find that the nearest-neighbor statistics of the refined extrema are close to, or above, the $β=1$ benchmark, and the greedy-path ratio statistics are described by even larger effective $β$ values. Finally we studied the all-pair extrema spatial form factor and found that, in the one-, two-, and three-dimensional cases, its main structure is controlled by the corresponding uniform interval, rectangle, or cuboid geometry of the extrema cloud and found the dip-ram-plateau structure in the last two cases. Thus the form factor provides a complementary global diagnostic of how the extrema fill their effective metric support, while the genuinely nontrivial local and mesoscopic organization is carried by the nearest-neighbor and greedy-path statistics.

Local operator quench induced by two-dimensional inhomogeneous and homogeneous CFT Hamiltonians

Weibo Mao, Masahiro Nozaki, Kotaro Tamaoka +1 more

A bstract We explore non-equilibrium processes in two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) due to the growth of operators induced by inhomogeneous and homogeneous Hamiltonians by investigating the time dependence of the partition function, energy density, and entanglement entropy. The non-equilibrium processes considered in this paper are constructed out of the Lorentzian and Euclidean time evolution governed by different Hamiltonians. We explore the effect of the time ordering on entanglement dynamics so that we find that in a free boson CFT and RCFTs, this time ordering does not affect the entanglement entropy, while in the holographic CFTs, it does. Our main finding is that in the holographic CFTs, the non-unitary time evolution induced by the inhomogeneous Hamiltonian can retain the initial state information longer than in the unitary time evolution.

Double local quenches in 2D CFTs and gravitational force

Pawel Caputa, Tokiro Numasawa, Teppei Shimaji +2 more

Abstract In this work we extensively study the dynamics of excited states created by instantaneous local quenches at two different points, i.e. double local quenches. We focus on setups in two dimensional holographic and free Dirac fermion CFTs. We calculate the energy stress tensor and entanglement entropy for double joining and splitting local quenches. In the splitting local quenches we find an interesting oscillating behaviors. Finally, we study the energy stress tensor in double operator local quenches. In all these examples, we find that, in general, there are non-trivial interactions between the two local quenches. Especially, in holographic CFTs, the differences of the above quantities between the double local quench and the simple sum of two local quenches tend to be negative. We interpret this behavior as merely due to gravitational force in their gravity duals.

Universal Scaling Properties After Quantum Quenches

Damián A. Galante

In this Thesis, the problem of a quantum quench in quantum field theories is analyzed. This involves studying the real time evolution of observables in a theory that undergoes a change in one of its couplings. These quenches are then characterized by two parameters: $\\delta \\lambda$, the magnitude of the quench and most importantly, $\\delta t$, the quench duration. In contrast to previous studies of abrupt quenches in the condensed matter theory community, we will be interested in smooth quenches with a finite $\\delta t$.\nMotivated by existing results in holographic theories, we studied the problem of a fast smooth quench in free field theories by quenching the mass of a free scalar and a free Dirac fermion. For specific mass profiles, exact analytic answers were found. We found that expectation values for the quenched operators obey universal scaling properties. We provide both numerical and analytic evidence for this scaling to hold in free field theories and argue that the same scaling properties should hold independently of the theory, the coupling or the quench profile. In fact, we show that the renormalized expectation value of an operator ${\\cal{O}}_\\Delta$ of dimension $\\Delta$ should scale as $\\vev{{\\cal{O}}_\\Delta}_{ren} \\sim \\delta \\lambda/(\\delta t)^{2\\Delta -d}$, when the quench rate is fast compared to the quench amplitude. This growth is further enhanced by a logarithmic factor in even dimensions.\nThis result suggests that, for $\\Delta>d/2$, expectation values will diverge in the limit of $\\delta t \\to 0$, which seem to contradict previous studies of abrupt quenches. In this Thesis, we carefully analzye the relation between the two approaches and establish restrictions to the kind of objects that can be studied using the abrupt approximation.\nApart from the fast smooth quench, another regime of interest is the slow quench through a critical point. In free field theories we found that adiabatic behaviour breaks down when the system is close enough to the critical point and renormalized expectation values scale different, following expectations from the Kibble-Zurek argument. Given any finite fixed time, we are able to show how expectation values scale at any value of the quench duration $\\delta t$.

From confinement to chaos in AdS/CFT via nonequilibrium local states

Dmitry Sergeevich Ageev, Vladimir A. Bykov

In this paper, we study excited states in anti–de Sitter (AdS) space prepared by local operator insertions of a massive scalar field, corresponding to local operator quenches in a free bulk scalar theory. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we compute the time evolution of boundary observables in the dual conformal field theory states. We then introduce a hard wall in AdS Poincare coordinates to impose an infrared cutoff (“hard wall”), thereby creating a confining deformation of the dual conformal field theory, and analyze the dynamics of excited states in this confining background. By comparing the evolution of boundary two-point correlation functions in the deformed theory with the statistics of Gaussian random matrix ensembles, we show that for sufficiently heavy operators, the spacing-ratio statistics of peaks in the temporal dynamics are closest to those of the Gaussian symplectic ensemble. Finally, we extend the analysis to the compact Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole and to its hard-wall deformation, where we find qualitatively similar trends.
