Abstract

We report the experimental generation of all four frequency-bin Bell states in a single versatile setup via successive pumping of spontaneous parametric down-conversion with single and dual spectral lines. Our scheme utilizes intensity modulation to control the pump configuration and offers turn-key generation of any desired Bell state using only off-the-shelf telecommunication equipment. We employ Bayesian inference to reconstruct the density matrices of the generated Bell states, finding fidelities ≥97% for all cases. Additionally, we demonstrate the sensitivity of the frequency-bin Bell states to common-mode and differential-mode temporal delays traversed by the photons comprising the state-presenting the potential for either enhanced resolution or nonlocal sensing enabled by our complete Bell basis synthesizer.

Frequency-bin entangled photons

Laurent Olislager, Johann Cussey, Anh Tuan Nguyen +4 more

A monochromatic laser pumping a parametric down-conversion crystal generates frequency-entangled photon pairs. We study this experimentally by addressing such frequency-entangled photons at telecommunication wavelengths (around $1550$ nm) with fiber-optics components such as electro-optic phase modulators and narrow-band frequency filters. The theory underlying our approach uses the notion of frequency-bin entanglement. Our results show that the phase modulators address coherently up to eleven frequency bins, leading to an interference pattern which can violate by more than five standard deviations a Bell inequality adapted to our setup.

Experimental entanglement concentration and universal Bell-state synthesizer

Yoon-Ho Kim, S. P. Kulik, Maria V. Chekhova +2 more

We report a Bell-state synthesizer in which an interferometric entanglement concentration scheme is used. An initially mixed polarization state from type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion becomes entangled after the interferometric entanglement concentration. This Bell-state synthesizer is universal in the sense that the output polarization state is not affected by spectral filtering, crystal thickness, and, most importantly, the choice of pump source. It is also robust against environmental disturbance and a more general state, partially mixed--partially entangled state, can be readily generated as well.

Quantum state generation via integrated frequency combs (Conference Presentation)

Piotr Roztocki, Michael Kues, Christian Reimer +9 more

The on-chip generation of optical quantum states will enable accessible advances for quantum technologies. We demonstrate that integrated quantum frequency combs (based on high-Q microring resonators made from a CMOS-compatible, high refractive-index doped-glass platform) can enable the generation of pure heralded single photons, cross-polarized photon pairs, as well as bi- and multi-photon entangled qubit states over a broad frequency comb covering the S, C, L telecommunications band, with photon frequencies corresponding to standard telecommunication channels spaced by 200 GHz. Exploiting a self-locked, intra-cavity excitation configuration, a highly-stable source of multiplexed heralded single photons is demonstrated, operating continuously for several weeks with less than 5% fluctuations. The photon bandwidth of 110 MHz is compatible with quantum memories, and high photon purity was confirmed through single-photon auto-correlation measurements. In turn, by simultaneously exciting two orthogonal polarization mode resonances, we demonstrate the first realization of type-II spontaneous FWM (in analogy to type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion), allowing the direct generation of orthogonally-polarized photon pairs on a chip. By using a double-pulse excitation, we demonstrate the generation of time-bin entangled photon pairs. We measure qubit entanglement with visibilities above 90%, enabling the implementation of quantum information processing protocols. Finally, the excitation field and the generated photons are intrinsically bandwidth-matched due to the resonant characteristics of the ring cavity, enabling the multiplication of Bell states and the generation of a four-photon time-bin entangled state. We confirm the generation of this four-photon entangled state through four-photon quantum interference.

Tunable frequency-bin multimode squeezed vacuum states of light

Christian Drago, Agata M. Brańczyk

Squeezed states are a versatile class of quantum states with applications ranging from quantum computing to high-precision detection. We propose a method for generating tunable squeezed vacuum states of light with multiple modes encoded in frequency bins. Our method uses custom-engineered spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by a pulse-shaped pump field. The multimode squeezed states are generated in a single pass and can be tuned in real time by adjusting the properties of the pump field. Exploring new quantum states of light, encoded in new degrees of freedom, can be a fruitful path toward discovering new quantum applications.
