Abstract

It is known that the standard and the inverted harmonic oscillator are different. Replacing thus ω by ±iω in the regular oscillator is necessary going to give the inverted oscillator H^{r}. This replacement would lead to anti- PT-symmetric harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian (∓iH^{os}). The pseudo-hermiticity relation has been used here to relate the anti-PT-symmetric harmonic Hamiltonian to the inverted oscillator. By using a simple algebra, we introduce the ladder operators describing the inverted harmonic oscillator to reproduce the analytical solutions. We construct the inverted coherent states which minimize the quantum mechanical uncertainty between the position and the momentum. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Omar Djemli and Nouredinne Mebarki who died due to covid 19.

Anti-PT-symmetric harmonic oscillator and its relation to the inverted harmonic oscillator

Nadjat Amaouche, Ishak Bouguerche, Rahma Zerimeche +1 more

We treat the quantum dynamics of a harmonic oscillator as well as its inverted counterpart in the Schrödinger picture. Generally in the most papers of the literature, the inverted harmonic oscillator is formally obtained from the harmonic oscillator by the replacement of ω to iω, this leads to unbounded eigenvectors. This explicitly demonstrates that there are some unclear points involved in redefining the variables in the harmonic oscillator inversion. To remedy this situation, we introduce a scaling operator (Dyson transformation) by connecting the inverted harmonic oscillator to an anti-PT-symmetric harmonic oscillator, we obtain the standard quasi-Hermiticity relation which would ensure the time invariance of the eigenfunction's norm. We give a complete description for the eigenproblem. We show that the wavefunctions for this system are normalized in the sense of the pseudo-scalar product. A Gaussian wave packet of the inverted oscillator is investigated by using the ladder operators method. This wave packet is found to be associated with the generalized coherent state that can be crucially utilized for investigating the mean values of the space and momentum operators. We find that these mean values reproduce the classical motion.

A Swanson-like Hamiltonian and the inverted harmonic oscillator

Fabio Bagarello

Abstract We deduce the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of a parameter-dependent Hamiltonian H θ which is closely related to the Swanson Hamiltonian, and we construct bi-coherent states for it. After that, we show how and in which sense the eigensystem of the Hamiltonian H of the inverted quantum harmonic oscillator can be deduced from that of H θ . We show that there is no need to introduce a different scalar product using some ad hoc metric operator, as suggested by other authors. Indeed we prove that a distributional approach is sufficient to deal with the Hamiltonian H of the inverted oscillator.

Position and momentum uncertainties of the normal and inverted harmonic oscillators under the minimal length uncertainty relation

Zachary Lewis, Tatsu Takeuchi

We analyze the position and momentum uncertainties of the energy eigenstates of the harmonic oscillator in the context of a deformed quantum mechanics, namely, that in which the commutator between the position and momentum operators is given by $[\stackrel{^}{x},\stackrel{^}{p}]=i\ensuremath{\hbar}(1+\ensuremath{\beta}{\stackrel{^}{p}}^{2})$. This deformed commutation relation leads to the minimal length uncertainty relation $\ensuremath{\Delta}x\ensuremath{\ge}(\ensuremath{\hbar}/2)(1/\ensuremath{\Delta}p+\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\Delta}p)$, which implies that $\ensuremath{\Delta}x\ensuremath{\sim}1/\ensuremath{\Delta}p$ at small $\ensuremath{\Delta}p$ while $\ensuremath{\Delta}x\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\Delta}p$ at large $\ensuremath{\Delta}p$. We find that the uncertainties of the energy eigenstates of the normal harmonic oscillator ($m>0$), derived in L. N. Chang, D. Minic, N. Okamura, and T. Takeuchi, Phys. Rev. D 65, 125027 (2002), only populate the $\ensuremath{\Delta}x\ensuremath{\sim}1/\ensuremath{\Delta}p$ branch. The other branch, $\ensuremath{\Delta}x\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\Delta}p$, is found to be populated by the energy eigenstates of the ``inverted'' harmonic oscillator ($m<0$). The Hilbert space in the inverted case admits an infinite ladder of positive energy eigenstates provided that $\ensuremath{\Delta}{x}_{\mathrm{min}}=\ensuremath{\hbar}\sqrt{\ensuremath{\beta}}>\sqrt{2}[{\ensuremath{\hbar}}^{2}/k|m|{]}^{1/4}$. Correspondence with the classical limit is also discussed.

Physical aspects of pseudo-Hermitian andPT-symmetric quantum mechanics

Ali Mostafazadeh, Ahmet Batal

For a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian H possessing a real spectrum, we introduce a canonical orthonormal basis in which a previously introduced unitary mapping of H to a Hermitian Hamiltonian h takes a simple form. We use this basis to construct the observables O α of the quantum mechanics based on H . In particular, we introduce pseudo-Hermitian position and momentum operators and a pseudo-Hermitian quantization scheme that relates the latter to the ordinary classical position and momentum observables. These allow us to address the problem of determining the conserved probability density and the underlying classical system for pseudo-Hermitian and in particular PT -symmetric quantum systems. As a concrete example we construct the Hermitian Hamiltonian h , the physical observables O α , the localized states and the conserved probability density for the non-Hermitian PT -symmetric square well. We achieve this by employing an appropriate perturbation scheme. For this system, we conduct a comprehensive study of both the kinematical and dynamical effects of the non-Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian on various physical quantities. In particular, we show that these effects are quantum mechanical in nature and diminish in the classical limit. Our results provide an objective assessment of the physical aspects of PT -symmetric quantum mechanics and clarify its relationship with both conventional quantum mechanics and classical mechanics.

COHERENT STATES AND SCHWINGER MODELS FOR PSEUDO GENERALIZATION OF THE HEISENBERG ALGEBRA

Hossein Fakhri, B. Mojaveri, Alireza Dehghani

We show that the non-Hermitian Hamiltonians of the simple harmonic oscillator with [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] symmetries involve a pseudo generalization of the Heisenberg algebra via two pairs of creation and annihilation operators which are [Formula: see text]-pseudo-Hermiticity and [Formula: see text]-anti-pseudo-Hermiticity of each other. The non-unitary Heisenberg algebra is represented by each of the pair of the operators in two different ways. Consequently, the coherent and the squeezed coherent states are calculated in two different approaches. Moreover, it is shown that the approach of Schwinger to construct the su(2), su(1, 1) and sp(4, ℝ) unitary algebras is promoted so that unitary algebras with more linearly dependent number of generators are made.

A Non-Hermitian Relativistic Oscillator Exactly Mapped to a Hermitian Schrodinger Problem

Mustapha Maamache

We introduce the Dirac Inverted Oscillator, a new exactly solvable relativistic quantum system obtained through a Hermitian modification of the generalized momentum operator in the Dirac equation. In contrast to the conventional Dirac oscillator, where the generalized momentum is intrinsically non-Hermitian while the Hamiltonian remains Hermitian, the present construction reverses these Hermiticity properties: the generalized momentum becomes Hermitian, whereas the corresponding Dirac Hamiltonian is intrinsically non-Hermitian. This inversion leads to a new class of relativistic Hamiltonians within the framework of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. Starting from the stationary Dirac equation, we derive the corresponding second-order wave equation and establish the generalized symmetry properties of the model, including pseudo-Hermiticity and pseudo- symmetry. We then prove that the Dirac Inverted Oscillator is exactly related to the conventional Dirac oscillator through a Hermitian but non-unitary similarity transformation generated by a dilation operator. This transformation is bijective and invertible, mapping the original non-Hermitian relativistic problem onto an equivalent Hermitian Schrodinger eigenvalue problem while preserving its complete spectral structure. The transformed Hermitian problem is solved analytically, allowing the exact relativistic spectrum and the corresponding eigenfunctions of the original non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to be determined explicitly. The present work therefore establishes an exact correspondence between a non-Hermitian relativistic Dirac system and a Hermitian Schrodinger problem, providing a new exactly solvable model and illustrating the effectiveness of Hermitian non-unitary similarity transformations for constructing analytically solvable relativistic Hamiltonians beyond the conventional Hermitian framework.
