Abstract

We compute the spectrum for a class of quantum Markov semigroups describing systems of N particle interacting through a binary collision mechanism. These quantum Markov semigroups are associated to a novel kind of quantum random walk on a graph, with the graph structure arising naturally in the quantization of the classical Kac model, and we show that the spectrum of the generator of the quantum Markov semigroup is closely related to the spectrum of the Laplacian on the corresponding graph. For the direct analog of the original classical Kac model, we determine the exact spectral gap for the quantum generator. We also give a new and simple method for studying the spectrum of certain graph Laplacians.

Markovian repeated interaction quantum systems

We study a class of dynamical semigroups [Formula: see text] that emerge, by a Feynman–Kac type formalism, from a random quantum dynamical system [Formula: see text] driven by a Markov chain [Formula: see text]. We show that the almost sure large time behavior of the system can be extracted from the large [Formula: see text] asymptotics of the semigroup, which is in turn directly related to the spectral properties of the generator [Formula: see text]. As a physical application, we consider the case where the [Formula: see text]’s are the reduced dynamical maps describing the repeated interactions of a system [Formula: see text] with thermal probes [Formula: see text]. We study the full statistics of the entropy in this system and derive a fluctuation theorem for the heat exchanges and the associated linear response formulas.

The spectral gap of a Gaussian quantum Markovian generator

Franco Fagnola, Damiano Poletti, Emanuela Sasso +1 more

Gaussian quantum Markov semigroups are the natural non-commutative extension of classical Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups. They arise in open quantum systems of bosons where canonical non-commuting random variables of positions and momenta come into play. If there exists a faithful invariant density we explicitly compute the optimal exponential convergence rate, namely the spectral gap of the generator, in non-commutative L 2 spaces determined by the invariant density showing that the exact value is the lowest eigenvalue of a certain matrix determined by the diffusion and drift matrices. The spectral gap turns out to depend on the non-commutative L 2 space considered, whether the one determined by the so-called GNS or KMS multiplication by the square root of the invariant density. In the first case, it is strictly positive if and only if there is the maximum number of linearly independent noises. While, we exhibit explicit examples in which it is strictly positive only with KMS multiplication. We do not assume any symmetry or quantum detailed balance condition with respect to the invariant density.

Structure of generic quantum Markov semigroup

Raffaella Carbone, Emanuela Sasso, Veronica Umanità

In this paper, we study some relevant properties of generic quantum Markov semigroups, in particular related to their asymptotic behavior. We can describe the structure of the set of fixed points and of the invariant states in terms of the Hamiltonian’s spectrum and of the communication classes of the classical Markov process associated with the diagonal part of the semigroup. Moreover we study the decoherence-free algebra and we complete the characterization of environmental decoherence for a generic quantum Markov semigroup.

Quantum Markov Semigroups of Low Density Limit: the Generic Case

Luigi Accardi, F. Guerrero-Poblete

We investigate the structure of quantum Markov generators that describe the reduced dynamics of a test particle interacting with a dilute Bose gas in the low density limit. These generators, called low density limit type generators (LDL), differ from the weak coupling limit type generators (WCL) studied in [4, 5] because of the presence of the T-operator that describes the change in momentum of the gas particle due to collisions with the test particle. We propose a general definition of Markov generator of stochastic limit type that includes (almost) all generators arising in the stochastic limit approach and we prove that the associated semigroups as well as their invariant states (or weights) have a very special structure which extends the explicit representation for the generic quantum Markov semigroups of weak coupling limit type, due to Accardi, Hachicha and Ouerdiane [7]. We also investigate the structure of invariant states and give conditions on the T - operator for the existence of a unique invariant state and of equilibrium states.

A Quantum Kac Model

Eric A. Carlen, Maria C. Carvalho, Michael Loss

We introduce quantum versions of the Kac Master Equation and the Kac Boltzmann Equation. We study the steady states of each of these equations, and prove a propagation of chaos theorem that relates them. The Quantum Kac Master Equation (QKME) describes a quantum Markov semigroup, while the Kac Boltzmann Equation describes a non-linear evolution of density matrices on the single particle state space. All of the steady states of the $N$ particle quantum system described by the QKME are separable, and thus the evolution described by the QKME is entanglement breaking. The results set the stage for a quantitative study of approach to equilibrium in quantum kinetic theory, and a quantitative study the rate of destruction of entanglement in a class of quantum Markov semigroups describing binary interactions.

Spectral Properties of Circulant Quantum Markov Semigroups

Jorge R. Bolaños-Servín, Raffaella Carbone

We study the spectral properties of the generators of circulant quantum Markov semigroups. We can find an explicit expression for eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the infinitesimal generator and, in particular, we prove that the spectral gap is strictly positive. By proper techniques, we can reduce the problem on non-commutative algebras to the analogous one for a classical process with a circulant generator.
