Abstract

Motivated by the recent discovery of ferromagnetic quantum criticality in the heavy fermion compound ${\mathrm{CeRh}}_{6}{\mathrm{Ge}}_{4}$, we develop a numerical algorithm of infinite projected entangled pair states for the anisotropic ferromagnetic Kondo-Heisenberg model in two dimensions and study the ferromagnetic quantum phase transitions with varying magnetic and hopping anisotropy. Our calculations reveal a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in the large anisotropic region and first-order quantum phase transitions for smaller anisotropy. Our results highlight the importance of magnetic anisotropy on ferromagnetic quantum criticality in Kondo lattice systems and provide a possible explanation for the experimental observation in ${\mathrm{CeRh}}_{6}{\mathrm{Ge}}_{4}$ with a quasi-one-dimensional magnetic structure. Our work opens the avenue for future studies of the rich Kondo lattice physics using state-of-the-art tensor network approaches.

Quantum phase transitions in the Kondo-necklace model: perturbative continuous unitary transformation approach

Shayan Hemmatiyan, M. Rahimi Movassagh, Nader Ghassemi +3 more

The Kondo-necklace model can describe magnetic low-energy limit of strongly correlated heavy fermion materials. There exist multiple energy scales in this model corresponding to each phase of the system. Here, we study quantum phase transition between the Kondo-singlet phase and the antiferromagnetic long-range ordered phase, and show the effect of anisotropies in terms of quantum information properties and vanishing energy gap. We employ the 'perturbative continuous unitary transformations' approach to calculate the energy gap and spin-spin correlations for the model in the thermodynamic limit of one, two, and three spatial dimensions as well as for spin ladders. In particular, we show that the method, although being perturbative, can predict the expected quantum critical point, where the gap of low-energy spectrum vanishes, which is in good agreement with results of other numerical and Green's function analyses. In addition, we employ concurrence, a bipartite entanglement measure, to study the criticality of the model. Absence of singularities in the derivative of concurrence in two and three dimensions in the Kondo-necklace model shows that this model features multipartite entanglement. We also discuss crossover from the one-dimensional to the two-dimensional model via the ladder structure.

Locally Critical Point in an Anisotropic Kondo Lattice

Daniel R. Grempel, Qimiao Si A

We report the first numerical identification of a locally quantum critical point at which the criticality of the local Kondo physics is embedded in that associated with a magnetic ordering. We are able to numerically access the quantum critical behavior by focusing on a Kondo-lattice model with Ising anisotropy. We also establish that the critical exponent for the q-dependent dynamical spin susceptibility is fractional and compares well with the experimental value for heavy fermions.

Entanglement and quantum phases in the anisotropic ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in the presence of domain walls

Francisco Castilho Alcaraz, A. Saguia, M. S. Sarandy

We discuss entanglement in the spin-1∕2 anisotropic ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in the presence of a boundary magnetic field generating domain walls. By increasing the magnetic field, the model undergoes a first-order quantum phase transition from a ferromagnetic to a kink-type phase, which is associated to a jump in the content of entanglement available in the system. Above the critical point, pairwise entanglement is shown to be nonvanishing and independent of the boundary magnetic field for large chains. Based on this result, we provide an analytical expression for the entanglement between arbitrary spins. Moreover, the effects of the quantum domains on the gapless region and for antiferromagnetic anisotropy are numerically analyzed. Finally multiparticle entanglement properties are considered, from which we establish a characterization of the critical anisotropy separating the gapless regime from the kink-type phase.

Local quantum criticality of a one-dimensional Kondo insulator model

Wei Kang Zhu, Jian‐Xin Zhu

The continuous quantum phase transition and the nature of the quantum critical point (QCP) in a modified Kondo lattice model with Ising anisotropic exchange interactions are studied within the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. We investigate the effect of quantum fluctuations on critical Kondo destruction QCP by probing static and dynamic properties of the magnetic order and the Kondo effect. In particular, we identify that local Kondo physics itself becomes critical at the magnetic phase transition point, providing unbiased evidences for local quantum criticality between two insulators without involving the Fermi surface.

Quantum phase transitions in two-dimensional strongly correlated fermion systems

An Bao, Yao‐Hua Chen, Heng-Fu Lin +2 more

In this article, we review our recent work on quantum phase transition in two-dimensional strongly correlated fermion systems. We discuss the metal–insulator transition properties of these systems by calculating the density of states, double occupancy, and Fermi surface evolution using a combination of the cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) and the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. Furthermore, we explore the magnetic properties of each state by defining magnetic order parameters. Rich phase diagrams with many intriguing quantum states, including antiferromagnetic metal, paramagnetic metal, Kondo metal, and ferromagnetic insulator, were found for the two-dimensional lattices with strongly correlated fermions. We believe that our results would lead to a better understanding of the properties of real materials.
