Abstract

Concerning the [Formula: see text]-Lipkin model, the calculation of the excitation energy to the first excited state gives rise to the following fact: The two results based on the exact treatment and the conventional random phase approximation (RPA) are in unexpected disagreement. In order to remove this discrepancy, the conventional RPA is renewed. With the aim of this renewal, the terms, which cannot be dealt with in the conventional one, are estimated. The basic framework of this new form is not reorganized from that of the conventional one. In addition, the [Formula: see text]-Lipkin model itself is also modified so as to be applicable to the case with nonclosed shell system. To this modification, one more [Formula: see text]-algebra, which has been already proposed by the present authors, is applied. Through the use of this algebra, the [Formula: see text]-Lipkin model is applicable to the case with any total fermion number permitted in the model.

Reproduction of exact solutions of Lipkin model by nonlinear higher random-phase approximation

J. Terasaki, A. Smetana, F. Šimkovic +1 more

It is shown that the random-phase approximation (RPA) method with its nonlinear higher generalization, which was previously considered as approximation except for a very limited case, reproduces the exact solutions of the Lipkin model. The nonlinear higher RPA is based on an equation nonlinear on eigenvectors and includes many particle-many hole components in the creation operator of the excited states. We demonstrate the exact character of solutions analytically for the particle number [Formula: see text] and, numerically, for [Formula: see text]. This finding indicates that the nonlinear higher RPA is equivalent to the exact Schrödinger equation, which opens up new possibilities for realistic calculations in many-body problems.

Two-Level Lipkin Model in Unconventional Boson Realization

Y. Tsue, Constança Providência, João da Providência +1 more

With the aim of applying to the Lipkin model in the case of open shell system, a possible form of the boson realization for the su(2)-algebra is proposed both in the Schwinger and the Holstein-Primakoff representation. The basic idea is borrowed from the Schwinger boson realization for the su(4)-algebra for many-quark system recently presented by the present authors. As the simplest approximation, a certain approximate form is given and the result is a natural generalization of the RPA result in the case of closed shell system.

Ordinary and Higher Random-Phase Approximations on the Luttinger Model

N. J. Kupelian

The exactly solvable Luttinger model for a system of one-dimensional, massless, two-component fermions interacting via general two-body forces is used as a test case for a systematically generated sequence of decoupling approximations commonly referred to as random-phase approximations (RPA) of which the simple RPA is the lowest. It is found, irrespective of both the nature and strength of the interaction, that the exact (collective) spectrum, as well as the exact correlation energy, can already be obtained in the simple RPA, and furthermore, that the next higher RPA gives a vanishing correction to these quantities. It is also shown, quite in contradistinction to the exact result, that the free-gas momentum distribution ${\overline{n}}_{k}$ persists in the second RPA as well as in the first, thereby eliminating the higher RPA as a possible approach to the calculation of ${\overline{n}}_{k}$. Thus, in the context of this particular model, although the first few orders of RPA are highly effective for calculating the excitation spectrum and correlation energy, they are sensibly powerless in their ability to predict any variation in structure beyond that of the free-gas distribution, a result which most probably holds as well in the realistic three-dimensional case.

Beyond mean field study of excited states: Analysis within the Lipkin model

A. P. Severyukhin, M. Bender, P.-H. Heenen

We compare the generator coordinate method (GCM) and the random-phase approximation (RPA) in the framework of the exactly solvable Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. We show that the discretized GCM works quite well and permits to obtain results close to the exact results with a small number of discretization points.

A possible framework of the Lipkin model obeying the SU(n) algebra in arbitrary fermion number. I: The SU(2) algebras extended from the conventional fermion pair and determination of the minimum weight states

Y. Tsue, Constança Providência, João da Providência +1 more

The minimum weight states of the Lipkin model consisting of n single-particle levels and obeying the SU (n) algebra are investigated systematically. The basic idea is to use the SU (2) algebra, which is independent of the SU (n) algebra. This idea has already been presented by the present authors in the case of the conventional Lipkin model consisting of two single-particle levels and obeying the SU (2) algebra. If this idea is followed, the minimum weight states are determined for any fermion number appropriately occupying n single-particle levels.Naturally, the conventional minimum weight state is included: all fermions occupy energetically the lowest single-particle level in the absence of interaction. The cases n = 2, 3, 4, and 5 are discussed in some detail...............

Improved treatment of ground-state correlations: Modified random phase approximation

Nguyen Dinh Dang, Vladimir Zelevinsky

A method is proposed to improve the treatment of the ground-state correlations in a finite Fermi system compared with the standard random phase approximation (RPA) or earlier suggested renormalized RPA. The correlations lead to nonzero quasiparticle occupancies in the ground state. The method employs modified quasiparticles obtained by a canonical transformation of usual quasiparticles explicitly involving the quasiparticle occupation numbers. A set of equations is derived, which allows one to determine these occupation numbers along with the RPA modes. The formalism is illustrated with the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, and a model for superconducting pairing at a finite temperature. With the new approach, the ground-state correlations are significantly reduced, the energy of the first excited state becomes closer to the exact solution around the region where the RPA collapses, and the superconducting gap monotonously decreases instead of the sharp phase transition. We discuss the effective equivalence of the interaction effects and variation of temperature for the ground-state correlations.
