Bose gases in the Gross–Pitaevskii limit: A survey of some rigorous results

Abstract

We review some mathematical work on the Bose gas in the Gross–Pitaevskii regime. We start with the classical results by Lieb, Seiringer and Yngvason on the ground-state energy and by Lieb and Seiringer on the existence of Bose–Einstein condensation. Afterwards, we discuss some more recent progress, based on a rigorous version of Bogoliubov theory.

The Mathematics of the Bose Gas and its Condensation

Élliott H. Lieb, Robert Seiringer, Jan Philip Solovej +1 more

This book surveys results about the quantum mechanical many-body problem of the Bose gas that have been obtained by the authors over the last seven years. These topics are relevant to current experiments on ultra-cold gases; they are also mathematically rigorous, using many analytic techniques developed over the years to handle such problems. Some of the topics treated are the ground state energy, the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, Bose-Einstein condensation, superfluidity, one-dimensional gases, and rotating gases. The book also provides a pedagogical entry into the field for graduate students and researchers.

Bogoliubov theory in the Gross-Pitaevskii limit: a simplified approach

Christian Hainzl, Benjamin Schlein, Arnaud Triay

Abstract We show that Bogoliubov theory correctly predicts the low-energy spectral properties of Bose gases in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We recover recent results from [6, 7]. While our main strategy is similar to the one developed in [6, 7], we combine it with new ideas, taken in part from [15, 25]; this makes our proof substantially simpler and shorter. As an important step towards the proof of Bogoliubov theory, we show that low-energy states exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation with optimal control over the number of orthogonal excitations.

Bose gases, Bose–Einstein condensation, and the Bogoliubov approximation

Robert Seiringer

We review recent progress towards a rigorous understanding of the Bogoliubov approximation for bosonic quantum many-body systems. We focus, in particular, on the excitation spectrum of a Bose gas in the mean-field (Hartree) limit. A list of open problems will be discussed at the end.

Diagonalizing Bose Gases in the Gross–Pitaevskii Regime and Beyond

Morris Brooks

We present a novel approach to the Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose gases, allowing for an elementary derivation of the celebrated Lee-Huang-Yang formula in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. Furthermore, we identify the low lying excitation spectrum beyond the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling, extending a recent result (Brennecke et al. in Rev Math Phys 34, 2022) to significantly more singular scaling regimes. Finally, we provide an upper bound on the ground state energy in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime that captures the correct expected order of magnitude beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang formula.

Bosons in a Trap: Asymptotic Exactness of the Gross-Pitaevskii Ground State Energy Formula

Robert Seiringer

Recent experimental breakthroughs in the treatment of dilute Bose gases have renewed interest in their quantum mechanical description, respectively in approximations to it. The ground state properties of dilute Bose gases confined in external potentials and interacting via repulsive short range forces are usually described by means of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. In joint work with Elliott H. Lieb and Jakob Yngvason its status as an approximation for the quantum mechanical many-body ground state problem has recently been rigorously clarified. We present a summary of this work, for both the two-and three-dimensional case. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
