Abstract

We propose four finite-length scaling laws to predict the frame error rate (FER) performance in the waterfall region of spatially-coupled low-density parity-check code ensembles under full belief propagation (BP) decoding with a limit on the number of decoding iterations and a scaling law for sliding window decoding, also with limited iterations. The laws for full BP decoding provide a choice between accuracy and computational complexity; a good balance between them is achieved by the law that models the number of decoded bits after a certain number of BP iterations by a time-integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This framework is developed further to model sliding window decoding as a race between the integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and an absorbing barrier that corresponds to the left boundary of the sliding window. The proposed scaling laws yield accurate FER predictions for the semi-structured code ensembles proposed by Olmos and Urbanke.

Finite-Length Scaling of Spatially Coupled LDPC Codes Under Window Decoding Over the BEC

Roman Sokolovskii, Alexandre Graell i Amat, Fredrik Brännström

We analyze the finite-length performance of spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes under window decoding over the binary erasure channel. In particular, we propose a refinement of the scaling law by Olmos and Urbanke for the frame error rate (FER) of terminated SC-LDPC ensembles under full belief propagation (BP) decoding. The refined scaling law models the decoding process as two independent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, in correspondence to the two decoding waves that propagate toward the center of the coupled chain for terminated SC-LDPC codes. We then extend the proposed scaling law to predict the performance of (terminated) SC-LDPC code ensembles under the more practical sliding window decoding. Finally, we extend this framework to predict the bit error rate (BER) and block error rate (BLER) of SC-LDPC code ensembles. The proposed scaling law yields very accurate predictions of the FER, BLER, and BER for both full BP and window decoding.

Improved sliding window decoding of spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes

Shiyuan Mo, Li Chen

Spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes can achieve capacity approaching performance with a small message recovery latency due to the sliding window decoding (SWD). Using a partial Tanner graph, the SWD performs iterative message passing until the average error probability Peof the target symbols falls below a threshold or the maximum iteration number is reached. However, Pedoes not decrease monotonically as iteration progresses. This implies the symbol likelihoods that were yielded when the decoding terminates may not be optimal for making decisions. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved SWD (ISWD) for SC-LDPC codes. The proposal monitors the achievable minimum of Peand stores its associated likelihoods, so that when the decoding terminates the target symbols will be estimated based on the stored likelihoods. Our research shows the ISWD is able to enhance the decoding performance, especially in the waterfall region. It exhibits an asymptotic convergence to the SWD performance. A complexity reducing variant of the ISWD is also proposed to facilitate the decoding but at the cost of error-correction performance.

Error Floor Estimation of Spatially-Coupled Irregular LDPC Code Ensembles

Kengo Shibata, Shan Lu, M. Yoshida +2 more

The frame error rate (FER) of spatially-coupled irregular low-density parity-check (SC-iLDPC) code ensemble in error floor region is estimated. First, the number of codewords of each weight is calculated by the permutations of all the sub-codewords at their coupling positions. Second, the FER is estimated by these numbers of the codewords of each weight. Numerical results show that the FER performances in the error floor regions of the SC-iLDPC code ensembles are superior to the conventional irregular LDPC code ensembles at almost identical belief-propagation (BP) thresholds.

Finite-length scaling based on Belief Propagation for spatially coupled LDPC codes

Markus Stinner, Luca Barletta, Pablo M. Olmos

The equivalence of peeling decoding (PD) and Belief Propagation (BP) for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary erasure channel is analyzed. Modifying the scheduling for PD, it is shown that exactly the same variable nodes (VNs) are resolved in every iteration than with BP. The decrease of erased VNs during the decoding process is analyzed instead of resolvable equations: This quantity can also be derived with density evolution, resulting in a drastic decrease in complexity. Finally, a scaling law using this quantity is established for spatially coupled LDPC codes.

Finite-length performance of spatially-coupled LDPC codes under TEP decoding

Pablo M. Olmos, Fernando Pérez‐Cruz, Luis Salamanca +1 more

Spatially-coupled (SC) LDPC codes are constructed from a set of L regular sparse codes of length M. In the asymptotic limit of these parameters, SC codes present an excellent decoding threshold under belief propagation (BP) decoding, close to the maximum a posteriori (MAP) threshold of the underlying regular code. In the finite-length regime, we need both dimensions, L and M, to be sufficiently large, yielding a very large code length and decoding latency. In this paper, and for the erasure channel, we show that the finite-length performance of SC codes is improved if we consider the tree-structured expectation propagation (TEP) algorithm in the decoding stage. When applied to the decoding of SC LDPC codes, it allows using shorter codes to achieve similar error rates. We also propose a window-sliding scheme for the TEP decoder to reduce the decoding latency.
