Abstract

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are a powerful concept of probing far-from-equilibrium criticality in quantum many-body systems. With the strong ongoing experimental drive to quantum simulate lattice gauge theories, it becomes important to investigate DQPTs in these models in order to better understand their far-from-equilibrium properties. In this work, we use infinite matrix product state techniques to study DQPTs in spin-$S U(1)$ quantum link models. Although we are able to reproduce literature results directly connecting DQPTs to a sign change in the dynamical order parameter in the case of $S=1/2$ for quenches starting in a vacuum initial state, we find that for different quench protocols or different values of the link spin length $S>1/2$ this direct connection is no longer present. In particular, we find that there is an abundance of different types of DQPTs not directly associated with any sign change of the order parameter. Our findings indicate that DQPTs are fundamentally different between the Wilson-Kogut-Susskind limit and its representation through the quantum link formalism.

Probing confinement through dynamical quantum phase transitions: From quantum spin models to lattice gauge theories

Jesse J. Osborne, Ian P. McCulloch, Jad C. Halimeh

Confinement is an intriguing phenomenon prevalent in condensed matter and high-energy physics. Exploring its effect on the far-from-equilibrium criticality of quantum many-body systems is of great interest from both a fundamental and a technological point of view. Here, we employ large-scale uniform matrix product state calculations to show that a qualitative change in the type of dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) accompanies the confinement-deconfinement transition in three paradigmatic models: the power-law interacting quantum Ising chain, the two-dimensional quantum Ising model, and the spin- S U ( 1 ) quantum link model. By tuning a confining parameter in these models, it is found that () DQPTs arise as a signature of (de)confinement. Whereas manifold DQPTs are associated with a sign change of the order parameter, their branch counterparts are not, but rather occur even when the order parameter exhibits considerably constrained dynamics. Our conclusions can be tested in modern quantum-simulation platforms, such as ion-trap setups and cold-atom experiments of gauge theories.

Unified resonant-manifold framework for dynamical quantum phase transitions

Jesse J. Osborne, Cheuk Yiu Wong, Jad C. Halimeh

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are an exciting paradigm of out-of-equilibrium criticality in many-body systems manifested in nonanalytic behavior in the return rate to the initial state following a sudden quench. While previous work has tried to distinguish between distinct types of DQPTs, such as regular and anomalous, or manifold and branch, a comprehensive understanding of why each type appears in a given scenario is still lacking. In this work, we propose a unified framework addressing this gap in terms of the energy structure of different product state configurations. In particular, while manifold DQPTs are governed by resonances within the initial state manifold, branch DQPTs are governed by resonances with a transitional manifold of states dynamically connected to the initial manifold by low-order processes. We show that the (ir)regularity of branch DQPTs is related to the multiplicity of this transitional manifold, and we also observe exotic periods of extended degeneracy in the return rate (beyond the conventional level crossing of a DQPT) which are also conditioned on the structure of this transitional manifold. We demonstrate this by studying quenches of two different configurations in the 1 + 1D Z_2 LGT to various parameter regimes. Our findings provide a dynamical mechanism underlying branch DQPTs and frames DQPTs as probes of resonant connectivity in constrained Hilbert spaces, paving the way to a more complete understanding of the multifaceted nature of dynamical criticality.

Topological classification of dynamical quantum phase transitions in the xy chain

S. Porta, Fabio Cavaliere, Maura Sassetti +1 more

Understanding the properties of far-from-equilibrium quantum systems is becoming a major challenge of both fundamental and applied physics. For instance, the lack of thermalization in integrable and (many body) localized systems provides new insights in the understanding of the relaxation dynamics of quantum phases. On a more applicative side, the possibility of exploiting the properties of far-from-equilibrium states, for example in pump-probe experiments, opens unprecedented scenarios. The effort in providing a classification of far-from-equilibrium phases, in terms of local or topological order parameters, is hence intense. In this context, the concept of Dynamical Quantum Phase Transition (DQPT) has been introduced. A DQPT is (roughly) defined as a zero of the Loschmidt-Echo as a function of time and represents a natural non-equilibrium counterpart of a thermal phase transition. Here, we investigate the DQPTs occurring in the quantum xy chain subject to a quantum quench of finite duration. We show that the number of distinct DQPTs can vary as the duration of the quantum quench is varied. However, the parity of such number only depends on the pre-quench and post-quench Hamiltonians and is related to a topological invariant.

Correlations and dynamical quantum phase transitions in an interacting topological insulator

Wing Chi Yu, Pedro D Sacramento, Yanchao Li +1 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs), which refer to the criticality in time of a quantum many-body system, have attracted much theoretical and experimental research interest recently. Despite that DQPTs are defined and signaled by the nonanalyticities in the Loschmidt rate, its interrelation with various correlation measures such as the equilibrium order parameters of the system remains unclear. In this work, by considering the quench dynamics in an interacting topological model, we find that the equilibrium order parameters of the model in general exhibit signatures around the DQPT, in the short time regime. The first extrema of the equilibrium order parameters are connected to the first Loschmidt rate peak. By studying the unequal-time two-point correlation, we also find that the correlation between the nearest neighbors decays while that with neighbors further away builds up as time grows in the noninteracting case, and upon the addition of repulsive intracell interactions. On the other hand, the intercell interaction tends to suppress the two-site correlations. These findings could provide us insights into the characteristic of the system around DQPTs, and pave the way to a better understanding of the dynamics in nonequilibrium quantum many-body systems.

Quantum spin fluctuations in dynamical quantum phase transitions

Cheuk Yiu Wong, Hadi Cheraghi, Wing Chi Yu

Quantum phase transitions have long been studied in their relation to quantum fluctuations. These fluctuations can be quantified as the degree of spin squeezing in spin models, where one of the two noncommutative observables breaks the standard quantum limit of measurement by minimizing its uncertainty. However, the understanding of their role in dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) is still incomplete. In this work, we combine the Loschmidt amplitude, which detects DQPTs, and the spin-squeezing parameter (SSP), the quantification of spin squeezing, to study the spin dynamics in a quenched interacting spin model around DQPT. We show that the extremum, mostly maximum, of SSP occurs near DQPTs when the system is quenched between different phases. These phenomena further unveil the spin correlations during DQPTs, for which the highest contribution aligns with the preferred direction of spin interactions in the postquenched phase. We also demonstrate that the time evolution of SSP differs for various quench scenarios. These findings provide us with physical insights into the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around DQPTs and their relation to the equilibrium phase diagrams.

Vortex loop dynamics and dynamical quantum phase transitions in three-dimensional fermion matter

Arkadiusz Kosior, Markus Heyl

Over the past decade, dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) have emerged as a paradigm shift in understanding nonequilibrium quantum many-body systems. However, the challenge lies in identifying order parameters that effectively characterize the associated dynamic phases. In this study we investigate the behavior of vortex singularities in the phase of the Green's function for a broad class of fermion lattice models in three dimensions after an instantaneous quench in both interacting and noninteracting systems. We find that the full set of vortices form one-dimensional dynamical objects, which we call vortex loops. We propose that the number of such vortex loops can be interpreted as a quantized order parameter that distinguishes between different nonequilibrium phases. Our results establish an explicit link between variations in the order parameter and DQPTs in the noninteracting scenario. Moreover, we show that the vortex loops are robust in the weakly interacting case, even though there is no direct relation between the Loschmidt amplitude and the Green's function. Finally, we observe that vortex loops can form complex dynamical patterns in momentum space. Our findings provide valuable insights for developing definitions of dynamical order parameters in nonequilibrium systems.
