Excited-eigenstate entanglement properties of XX spin chains with random long-range interactions

Y. Mohdeb, Javad Vahedi, Stefan Kettemann

Quantum information theoretical measures are useful tools for characterizing quantum dynamical phases. However, employing them to study excited states of random spin systems is a challenging problem. Here, we report results for the entanglement entropy (EE) scaling of excited eigenstates of random XX antiferromagnetic spin chains with long-range (LR) interactions decaying as a power law with distance with exponent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$. To this end, we extend the real-space renormalization group technique for excited states (RSRG-X) to solve this problem with LR interactions. For comparison, we perform numerical exact diagonalization (ED) calculations. From the distribution of energy-level spacings, as obtained by ED for up to $N\ensuremath{\sim}18$ spins, we find indications of a delocalization transition at ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}1$ in the middle of the energy spectrum. With RSRG-X and ED, we show that for $\ensuremath{\alpha}>{\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{*}$ the EE of excited eigenstates retains a logarithmic divergence similar to the one observed for the ground state of the same model, while for $\ensuremath{\alpha}<{\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{*}$ EE displays an algebraic growth with the subsystem size $l, {S}_{l}\ensuremath{\sim}{l}^{\ensuremath{\beta}}$, with $0<\ensuremath{\beta}<1$. We find that ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{*}\ensuremath{\approx}1$ coincides with the delocalization transition ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$ in the middle of the many-body spectrum. An interpretation of these results based on the structure of the RG rules is proposed, which is due to rainbow proliferation for very long-range interactions $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ll}1$. We also investigate the effective temperature dependence of the EE, allowing us to study the half-chain EE of eigenstates at different energy densities, where we find that the crossover in EE occurs at ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{*}<1$.

Excited-state entanglement and thermal mutual information in random spin chains

Yichen Huang, Joel E. Moore

Entanglement properties of excited eigenstates (or of thermal mixed states) are difficult to study with conventional analytical methods. We approach this problem for random spin chains using a recently developed real-space renormalization group technique for excited states (``RSRG-X''). For the random XX and quantum Ising chains, which have logarithmic divergences in the entanglement entropy of their (infinite-randomness) critical ground states, we show that the entanglement entropy of excited eigenstates retains a logarithmic divergence while the mutual information of thermal mixed states does not. However, in the XX case the coefficient of the logarithmic divergence extends from the universal ground-state value to a universal interval due to the degeneracy of excited eigenstates. These models are noninteracting in the sense of having free-fermion representations, allowing strong numerical checks of our analytical predictions.

Entanglement properties of correlated random spin chains and similarities with conformally invariant systems

João C. Getelina, Francisco Castilho Alcaraz, José A. Hoyos

We study the R\'enyi entanglement entropy and the Shannon mutual information for a class of spin-1/2 quantum critical XXZ chains with random coupling constants which are partially correlated. In the XX case, distinctly from the usual uncorrelated random case where the system is governed by an infinite-disorder fixed point, the correlated-disorder chain is governed by finite-disorder fixed points. Surprisingly, we verify that, although the system is not conformally invariant, the leading behavior of the R\'enyi entanglement entropies are similar to those of the clean (no randomness) conformally invariant system. In addition, we compute the Shannon mutual information among subsystems of our correlated-disorder quantum chain and verify the same leading behavior as the $n=2$ R\'enyi entanglement entropy. This result extends a recent conjecture concerning the same universal behavior of these quantities for conformally invariant quantum chains. For the generic spin-1/2 quantum critical XXZ case, the true asymptotic regime is identical to that in the uncorrelated disorder case. However, these finite-disorder fixed points govern the low-energy physics up to a very long crossover length scale, and the same results as in the XX case apply. Our results are based on exact numerical calculations and on a numerical strong-disorder renormalization group.
