Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we first construct thermofield double states for bosonic string theory in the light-cone gauge. We then obtain a coherent-thermal string state and a thermal-coherent string state. We use the covariance matrix approach to calculate the circuit complexity of coherent-thermal string states. In this approach, we generate the optimal geodesics by a horizontal string generator, and then obtain the circuit complexity using the length of the minimal geodesics in the group manifold.

Circuit complexity for generalized coherent states in thermal field dynamics

Minyong Guo, Zhong-Ying Fan, Jie Jiang +2 more

In this work, we study the circuit complexity for generalized coherent states in thermal systems by adopting the covariance matrix approach. We focus on the coherent thermal (CT) state, which is non-Gaussian and has a nonvanishing one-point function. We find that even though the CT state cannot be fully determined by the symmetric two-point function, the circuit complexity can still be computed in the framework of the covariance matrix formalism by properly enlarging the covariance matrix. Now the group generated by the unitary is the semiproduct of translation and the symplectic group. If the reference state is Gaussian, the optimal geodesic is still be generated by a horizontal generator such that the circuit complexity can be read from the generalized covariance matrix associated to the target state by taking the cost function to be ${F}_{2}$. For a single harmonic oscillator, we discuss carefully the complexity and its formation in the cases that the reference states are Gaussian and the target space is excited by a single mode or double modes. We show that the study can be extended to the free scalar field theory.

Circuit complexity in U(1) gauge theory

Amir Moghimnejad, Shahrokh Parvizi

In this paper, we study circuit complexity for a free vector field of a [Formula: see text] gauge theory in Coulomb gauge, and Gaussian states. We introduce a quantum circuit model with Gaussian states, including reference and target states. Using Nielsen’s geometric approach, the complexity then can be found as the shortest geodesic in the space of states. This geodesic is based on the notion of geodesic distance on the Lie group of Bogoliubov transformations equipped with a right-invariant metric. We use the framework of the covariance matrix to compute circuit complexity between Gaussian states. We apply this framework to the free vector field in general dimensions where we compute the circuit complexity of the ground state of the Hamiltonian.

Complexity and entanglement for thermofield double states

Shira Chapman, Jens Eisert, Lucas Hackl +4 more

Motivated by holographic complexity proposals as novel probes of black hole spacetimes, we explore circuit complexity for thermofield double (TFD) states in free scalar quantum field theories using the Nielsen approach. For TFD states at t = 0 t = 0 , we show that the complexity of formation is proportional to the thermodynamic entropy, in qualitative agreement with holographic complexity proposals. For TFD states at t>0 t > 0 , we demonstrate that the complexity evolves in time and saturates after a time of the order of the inverse temperature. The latter feature, which is in contrast with the results of holographic proposals, is due to the Gaussian nature of the TFD state of the free bosonic QFT. A novel technical aspect of our work is framing complexity calculations in the language of covariance matrices and the associated symplectic transformations, which provide a natural language for dealing with Gaussian states. Furthermore, for free QFTs in 1+1 dimension, we compare the dynamics of circuit complexity with the time dependence of the entanglement entropy for simple bipartitions of TFDs. We relate our results for the entanglement entropy to previous studies on non-equilibrium entanglement evolution following quenches. We also present a new analytic derivation of a logarithmic contribution due to the zero momentum mode in the limit of vanishing mass for a subsystem containing a single degree of freedom on each side of the TFD and argue why a similar logarithmic growth should be present for larger subsystems.

Thermo Field Dynamics of strings with definite boundary conditions

Ion V. Vancea

In this paper we review the construction of the thermal bosonic string and $D$-brane in the framework of the Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD). We briefly recall the well-known light-cone quantization of the bosonic string in the conformal gauge in flat space-time. Then we give a bird's eye view of the fundamental concepts of the TFD. Also, we present the thermalization of the bosonic string and the construction of the thermal D-brane boundary state. Finally, we show the calculation of the entropy of the thermal open string states with all boundary conditions and the entropy of the thermal D-brane state.

Complexity of mixed Gaussian states from Fisher information geometry

Giuseppe Di Giulio, Erik Tonni C

Abstract We study the circuit complexity for mixed bosonic Gaussian states in harmonic lattices in any number of dimensions. By employing the Fisher information geometry for the covariance matrices, we consider the optimal circuit connecting two states with vanishing first moments, whose length is identified with the complexity to create a target state from a reference state through the optimal circuit. Explicit proposals to quantify the spectrum complexity and the basis complexity are discussed. The purification of the mixed states is also analysed. In the special case of harmonic chains on the circle or on the infinite line, we report numerical results for thermal states and reduced density matrices.
