Abstract

A bstract We study the reflected entropy S R in the West Coast Model, a toy model of black hole evaporation consisting of JT gravity coupled to end-of-the-world branes. We demonstrate the validity of the holographic duality relating it to the entanglement wedge cross section away from phase transitions. Further, we analyze the important non-perturbative effects that smooth out the discontinuity in the S R phase transition. By performing the gravitational path integral, we obtain the reflected entanglement spectrum analytically. The spectrum takes a simple form consisting of superselection sectors, which we interpret as a direct sum of geometries, a disconnected one and a connected one involving a closed universe. We find that area fluctuations of O ( $$ \sqrt{G_N} $$ G N ) spread out the S R phase transition in the canonical ensemble, analogous to the entanglement entropy phase transition. We also consider a Renyi generalization of the reflected entropy and show that the location of the phase transition varies as a function of the Renyi parameter.

Reflected entropy in random tensor networks

Chris Akers, Thomas Faulkner, Simon Lin +1 more

A bstract In holographic theories, the reflected entropy has been shown to be dual to the area of the entanglement wedge cross section. We study the same problem in random tensor networks demonstrating an equivalent duality. For a single random tensor we analyze the important non-perturbative effects that smooth out the discontinuity in the reflected entropy across the Page phase transition. By summing over all such effects, we obtain the reflected entanglement spectrum analytically, which agrees well with numerical studies. This motivates a prescription for the analytic continuation required in computing the reflected entropy and its Rényi generalization which resolves an order of limits issue previously identified in the literature. We apply this prescription to hyperbolic tensor networks and find answers consistent with holographic expectations. In particular, the random tensor network has the same non-trivial tripartite entanglement structure expected from holographic states. We furthermore show that the reflected Rényi spectrum is not flat, in sharp contrast to the usual Rényi spectrum of these networks. We argue that the various distinct contributions to the reflected entanglement spectrum can be organized into approximate superselection sectors. We interpret this as resulting from an effective description of the canonically purified state as a superposition of distinct tensor network states. Each network is constructed by doubling and gluing various candidate entanglement wedges of the original network. The superselection sectors are labelled by the different cross-sectional areas of these candidate entanglement wedges.

Reflected entropy in random tensor networks. Part II. A topological index from canonical purification

Chris Akers, Thomas Faulkner, Simon Lin +1 more

A bstract In ref. [1], we analyzed the reflected entropy ( S R ) in random tensor networks motivated by its proposed duality to the entanglement wedge cross section ( EW ) in holographic theories, $$ {S}_R=2\frac{EW}{4G} $$ S R = 2 EW 4 G . In this paper, we discover further details of this duality by analyzing a simple network consisting of a chain of two random tensors. This setup models a multiboundary wormhole. We show that the reflected entanglement spectrum is controlled by representation theory of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. In the semiclassical limit motivated by holography, the spectrum takes the form of a sum over superselection sectors associated to different irreducible representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra and labelled by a topological index k ∈ ℤ >0 . Each sector contributes to the reflected entropy an amount $$ 2k\frac{EW}{4G} $$ 2 k EW 4 G weighted by its probability. We provide a gravitational interpretation in terms of fixed-area, higher-genus multiboundary wormholes with genus 2 k – 1 initial value slices. These wormholes appear in the gravitational description of the canonical purification. We confirm the reflected entropy holographic duality away from phase transitions. We also find important non-perturbative contributions from the novel geometries with k ≥ 2 near phase transitions, resolving the discontinuous transition in S R . Along with analytic arguments, we provide numerical evidence for our results. We finally speculate that signatures of a non-trivial von Neumann algebra, connected to the Temperley-Lieb algebra, will emerge from a modular flowed version of reflected entropy.

Reflected entropy and islands in JT gravity from partial dimensional reduction

Debarshi Basu, Himanshu Chourasiya

We study how mixed-state correlations reorganize across island transitions in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to a non-gravitating bath. Using the partial-dimensional-reduction realization of double holography, we compute reflected entropy for adjacent and disjoint radiation regions in the vacuum and in the thermofield-double state of an eternal black hole. Reflected entropy probes the internal partition of the entanglement wedge and therefore resolves structure that is invisible to the ordinary Page curve: its dominant saddle can change even when the entropy saddle of the union remains fixed, and it vanishes at leading order when the entanglement wedge disconnects. We show that the lower-dimensional reflected-island description agrees, to leading order in the dynamical brane fluctuation, with the higher-dimensional defect-extremal-surface picture. The finite-angle comparison further suggests a projection-covariant identification of island and brane endpoints at linear order. The resulting Page-like curves and Markov gaps provide a geometric probe of the reorganization of the purification and of non-Markovian, multipartite correlation structure during island transitions.

Replica wormholes and the black hole interior

Geoff Penington, Stephen H. Shenker, Douglas Stanford +1 more

A bstract Recent work has shown how to obtain the Page curve of an evaporating black hole from holographic computations of entanglement entropy. We show how these computations can be justified using the replica trick, from geometries with a spacetime wormhole connecting the different replicas. In a simple model, we study the Page transition in detail by summing replica geometries with different topologies. We compute related quantities in less detail in more complicated models, including JT gravity coupled to conformal matter and the SYK model. Separately, we give a direct gravitational argument for entanglement wedge reconstruction using an explicit formula known as the Petz map; again, a spacetime wormhole plays an important role. We discuss an interpretation of the wormhole geometries as part of some ensemble average implicit in the gravity description.

Reflected entropy in a BCFT on a black hole background

Debarshi Basu, Himanshu Chourasiya, Vinayak Raj +1 more

A bstract We obtain the reflected entropy for bipartite mixed state configurations involving two disjoint and adjacent subsystems in a two dimensional boundary conformal field theory (BCFT 2 ) in a black hole background. The bulk dual is described by an AdS 3 black string geometry truncated by a Karch-Randall brane. The entanglement wedge cross section computed for this geometry matches with the reflected entropy obtained for the BCFT 2 verifying the holographic duality. In this context, we also obtain the analogues of the Page curves for the reflected entropy and investigate the behaviour of the Markov gap.

Reflected entropy for an evaporating black hole

Tianyi Li, Jinwei Chu, Yang Zhou

Abstract We study reflected entropy as a mixed state correlation measure in black hole evaporation. As a measure for bipartite mixed states, reflected entropy can be computed between black hole and radiation, radiation and radiation, and even black hole and black hole. We compute reflected entropy curves in three different models: 3-side wormhole model, End-of-the-World (EOW) brane model in three dimensions and two-dimensional eternal black hole plus CFT model. For 3-side wormhole model, we find that reflected entropy is dual to island cross section. The reflected entropy between radiation and black hole increases at early time and then decreases to zero, similar to Page curve, but with a later transition time. The reflected entropy between radiation and radiation first increases and then saturates. For the EOW brane model, similar behaviors of reflected entropy are found. We propose a quantum extremal surface for reflected entropy, which we call quantum extremal cross section. In the eternal black hole plus CFT model, we find a generalized formula for reflected entropy with island cross section as its area term by considering the right half as the canonical purification of the left. Interestingly, the reflected entropy curve between the left black hole and the left radiation is nothing but the Page curve. We also find that reflected entropy between the left black hole and the right black hole decreases and goes to zero at late time. The reflected entropy between radiation and radiation increases at early time and saturates at late time.
