Abstract

Spinons are well known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba_{4}Ir_{3}O_{10}, which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with a magnetic exchange of ∼55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below T_{N}=130 K along with sharper excitations in (Ba_{1-x}Sr_{x})_{4}Ir_{3}O_{10}. Combining our data with exact diagonalization calculations, we find that the frustrated intratrimer interactions effectively reduce the system into decoupled spin chains, the subtle balance of which can be easily tipped by perturbations such as chemical doping. Our results put Ba_{4}Ir_{3}O_{10} between the one-dimensional chain and two-dimensional quantum spin liquid scenarios, illustrating a new way to suppress magnetic order and realize fractional spinons.

Probing multi-spinon excitations outside of the two-spinon continuum in the antiferromagnetic spin chain cuprate Sr2CuO3

Justine Schlappa, U. Kumar, K. J. Zhou +8 more

Abstract One-dimensional (1D) magnetic insulators have attracted significant interest as a platform for studying quasiparticle fractionalization, quantum criticality, and emergent phenomena. The spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with antiferromagnetic nearest neighbour interactions is an important reference system; its elementary magnetic excitations are spin-1/2 quasiparticles called spinons that are created in even numbers. However, while the excitation continuum associated with two-spinon states is routinely observed, the study of four-spinon and higher multi-spinon states is an open area of research. Here we show that four-spinon excitations can be accessed directly in Sr2CuO3 using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in a region of phase space clearly separated from the two-spinon continuum. Our finding is made possible by the fundamental differences in the correlation function probed by RIXS in comparison to other probes. This advance holds promise as a tool in the search for novel quantum states and quantum spin liquids.

Fractional and composite excitations of antiferromagnetic quantum spin trimer chains

Jun-Qing Cheng, Jun Li, Zijian Xiong +3 more

Abstract Using quantum Monte Carlo, exact diagonalization, and perturbation theory, we study the spectrum of the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg trimer chain by varying the ratio g = J2/J1 of the intertrimer and intratrimer coupling strengths. The doublet ground states of trimers form effective interacting S = 1/2 degrees of freedom described by a Heisenberg chain. Therefore, the conventional two-spinon continuum of width ∝ J1 when g = 1 evolves into to a similar continuum of width ∝ J2 when g → 0. The intermediate-energy and high-energy modes are termed doublons and quartons which fractionalize with increasing g to form the conventional spinon continuum. In particular, at g ≈ 0.716, the gap between the low-energy spinon branch and the high-energy band with mixed doublons, quartons, and spinons closes. These features should be observable in inelastic neutron scattering experiments if a quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnet with the linear trimer structure and J2 < J1 can be identified. Our results may open a window for exploring the high-energy fractional excitations.

Quasimolecular electronic structure of the trimer iridate Ba 4 NbIr 3 O 12

M. Magnaterra, Anna Sandberg, H. Schilling +17 more

The trimer compound Ba${}_{4}$NbIr${}_{3}$O${}_{12}$ is found to be a spin-orbit-entangled cluster Mott insulator, with two holes per trimer occupying quasimolecular orbitals. The authors employ here resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and exact diagonalization. The quasimolecular nature yields a characteristic interference pattern in the RIXS intensity, reflecting the character of the wavefunction. Despite a large hopping, strong spin-orbit coupling is decisive for the electronic states. This promises nontrivial magnetic moments in trimers with an odd number of holes.

Raman scattering signatures of spinons and triplons in frustrated antiferromagnets

Oliver Bellwood, H. L. Nourse, Benjamin James Powell

Magnetically frustrated spin systems compose a significant proportion of topological quantum spin liquid candidates. Evidence for spin liquids in these materials comes largely from the detection of fractionalised spin-1/2 quasiparticles, known as spinons. However, the one-dimensional Heisenberg chain, which is topologically trivial, also hosts spinons. Thus, observing spinons does not necessarily signify long-range entanglement. Here, we show that spinons arising from one-dimensional physics leave a clear fingerprint in magnetic Raman scattering. We achieve this by calculating the magnetic Raman intensity of coupled Heisenberg chains. Our findings are in excellent agreement with the magnetic Raman scattering measurements on the anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$.

Emergent Quasiparticles \& Field-Tuned RIXS Spectra in a Trimerized Spin-1/2 Chain

Subhajyoti Pal, Pradeep Thakur, Ashis Kumar Nandy +1 more

We investigate spin-flip excitations in the spin-1/2 trimer chain $\rm{Cu_3(P_2O_6OH)_2}$, featuring an antiferromagnetic exchange motif $J_1$-$J_1$-$J_2$ with $J_1 < J_2$. Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations, we demonstrate that single-spin-flip processes induced by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) generate emergent gapless modes governed by the underlying trimer periodicity alongside distinct high-energy excitations. By combining exact diagonalization and real-space renormalization group (RG) techniques, we attribute these features to fractionalized spinons and composite quasiparticles arising from one- and two-trimer excitations. Furthermore, we show that multi-spin RIXS excitations yield experimentally distinguishable spectral signatures of composite modes absent in single-spin-flip spectra. At the field-induced 1/3 magnetization plateau, single-spin-flip RIXS spectra evolves with the magnetic field to favor spin-polarized composite quasiparticles. This trend culminates in a gapless spectrum of spin-1 excitations beyond the plateau, paving the way for field-tuned Bose condensation of composite modes.

Trimerized Spin-$1/2$ Chain: Emergent Low-Energy Hamiltonian, Higher-Energy Excitations, and Magnetic and Thermodynamic Responses

Snehasish Sen, Sudhansu S. Mandal

We investigate a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain with trimerized exchange couplings relevant to Na$_2$Cu$_3$Ge$_4$O$_{12}$. We show that the low-energy Hilbert space maps onto an effective Heisenberg chain of composite spin-1/2 trimer degrees of freedom with positive coupling, enabling an exact spinon excitations via the Bethe ansatz. To access higher-energy dynamics, we develop a self-consistent Jordan-Wigner mean-field theory that yields three fermionic bands reflecting the underlying trimer structure. Remarkably, this approach reproduces the exact low-energy spinon continuum while predicting two additional higher-energy excitation bands consistent with the experimental observations and previous numerical simulations. The theory further captures the 1/3 magnetization plateau under an applied magnetic field, and provides testable predictions in magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. Our results establish a unified framework connecting low- and high-energy excitations in trimerized quantum spin chains.
