Abstract

Abstract We give a general construction relating Narain rational conformal field theories (RCFTs) and associated 3d Chern-Simons (CS) theories to quantum stabilizer codes. Starting from an abelian CS theory with a fusion group consisting of n even-order factors, we map a boundary RCFT to an n-qubit quantum code. When the relevant ’t Hooft anomalies vanish, we can orbifold our RCFTs and describe this gauging at the level of the code. Along the way, we give CFT interpretations of the code subspace and the Hilbert space of qubits while mapping error operations to CFT defect fields.

Qudit stabilizer codes, CFTs, and topological surfaces

Matthew Buican, Rajath Radhakrishnan

We study general maps from the space of rational conformal field theories (CFTs) with a fixed chiral algebra and associated Chern-Simons (CS) theories to the space of qudit stabilizer codes with a fixed generalized Pauli group. We consider certain natural constraints on such a map and show that the map can be described as a graph homomorphism from an orbifold graph, which captures the orbifold structure of CFTs, to a code graph, which captures the structure of self-dual stabilizer codes. By studying explicit examples, we show that this graph homomorphism cannot always be a graph embedding. However, we construct a physically motivated map from universal orbifold subgraphs of CFTs to operators in a generalized Pauli group. We show that this map results in a self-dual stabilizer code if and only if the surface operators in the bulk CS theories corresponding to the CFTs in question are self-dual. For CFTs admitting a stabilizer code description, we show that the full Abelianized generalized Pauli group can be obtained from twisted sectors of certain 0-form symmetries of the CFT. Finally, we connect our construction with SymTFTs, and we argue that many equivalences between codes that arise in our setup correspond to equivalence classes of bulk topological surfaces under fusion with invertible surfaces. Narain CFTs from quantum codes and their $${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$$ gauging

Kohki Kawabata, Tatsuma Nishioka, Takuya Okuda

A bstract We investigate the gauging of a $${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$$ symmetry in Narain conformal field theories (CFTs) constructed from qudit stabilizer codes. Considering both orbifold and fermionization, we establish a connection between $${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$$ gauging procedures and modifications of the momentum lattice by vectors characterizing the $${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$$ symmetry. We also provide three-dimensional interpretations of $${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$$ gaugings through abelian Chern-Simons theories, which act as symmetry topological field theories.

Narain CFTs from nonbinary stabilizer codes

Y. F. Alam, Kohki Kawabata, Tatsuma Nishioka +2 more

Abstract We generalize the construction of Narain conformal field theories (CFTs) from qudit stabilizer codes to the construction from quantum stabilizer codes over the finite field of prime power order ( $$ {\mathbbm{F}}_{p^m} $$ F p m with p prime and m ≥ 1) or over the ring ℤk with k > 1. Our construction results in rational CFTs, which cover a larger set of points in the moduli space of Narain CFTs than the previous one. We also propose a correspondence between a quantum stabilizer code with non-zero logical qubits and a finite set of Narain CFTs. We illustrate the correspondence with well-known stabilizer codes.

Quantum subsystem codes, CFTs and their ℤ2-gaugings

Keiichi Ando, Kohki Kawabata, Tatsuma Nishioka

A bstract We construct Narain conformal field theories (CFTs) from quantum subsystem codes, a more comprehensive class of quantum error-correcting codes than quantum stabilizer codes, for qudit systems of prime dimensions. The resulting code CFTs exhibit a global ℤ 2 symmetry, enabling us to perform the ℤ 2 -gauging to derive their orbifolded and fermionized theories when the symmetry is non-anomalous. We classify a subset of these subsystem code CFTs using weighted oriented graphs and enumerate those with small central charges. Consequently, we identify several bosonic code CFTs self-dual under the ℤ 2 -orbifold, new supersymmetric code CFTs, and a few fermionic code CFTs with spontaneously broken supersymmetry.

Gauging ℤN symmetries of Narain CFTs

Keiichi Ando, Kohki Kawabata, 辰磨 西岡

A bstract We investigate the gauging of a ℤ N symmetry in lattice conformal field theories (CFTs), also known as Narain CFTs. For prime N , we derive a spin selection rule for operators in a ℤ N charge-twisted sector of a general bosonic CFT. Using this result, we formulate the gauging procedures in lattice CFTs as modifications of the momentum lattices by a lattice vector that specifies a non-anomalous ℤ N symmetry. Applying this formulation to code CFTs, i.e., Narain CFTs constructed from error-correcting codes, we express the torus partition functions of the orbifolded and parafermionized theories in terms of the weight enumerator polynomials of the underlying codes. As an application, we identify a class of codes that yield self-dual bosonic CFTs under the orbifolding by a ℤ N symmetry.
