Abstract

We report on the experimental measurement of the dispersion relation of the density and spin collective excitation modes in an elongated two-component superfluid of ultracold bosonic atoms. Our parametric spectroscopic technique is based on the external modulation of the transverse confinement frequency, leading to the formation of density and spin Faraday waves. We show that the application of a coherent coupling between the two components reduces the phase symmetry and gives a finite mass to the spin modes.

Parametric generation of density and spin modes with formation of stationary condensed states in ultracold two-component quasi-one-dimensional Fermi gases

Yu. Kagan, L. A. Manakova

The temporal evolution of parametrically created collective excitations is studied in an ultracold two-component atomic Fermi gas. We consider quasi-one-dimensional geometry with a permanent modulation of the transverse trap frequency leading to the generation of longitudinal modes for both density and spin branches. After involvement of the interaction between excitations, the evolution comes to the formation of the stationary state with macroscopic filling of a single density or spin mode and zero occupancy for other modes located within the parametric energy interval. In the presence of this state correlation properties of fermions change essentially. Analysis of one-particle density matrix and density-density correlators reveals possibilities for experimental study of density and spin branches.

Parametric excitations in a harmonically trapped binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Meiling Wang, Juan Wang, Yan Li +2 more

We investigate parametric excitation and pattern formation in a harmonically trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. We assume the condensate to be in the miscible phase, but near the miscible-immiscible phase transition, where total-density and spin-density excitations are decoupled. By periodically modulating the atomic scattering lengths, Faraday patterns can be generated in both density and spin channels. In an elongated condensate, the pattern in the spin channel corresponds to a one-dimensional standing wave with the two components exhibiting an out-of-phase density oscillation, where the modulation frequency and the oscillation period are related to the velocity of the spin sound. After the spin pattern is fully developed, the system quickly enters a nonlinear destabilization regime. For a pancake-shaped condensate, a two-dimensional Faraday pattern is generated with an interesting $l$-fold rotational symmetry. The number of nodes along the radial and angular directions increases with larger modulation frequencies. We also compare the growth rates of spin Faraday patterns generated with different modulation protocols, which are accessible to current experiments.

Faraday patterns in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Huan Zhang, Sheng Liu, Yong-Sheng Zhang

We study the Faraday patterns generated by spin-orbit-coupling induced parametric resonance in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interaction. The collective elementary excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate, including density waves and spin waves, are coupled as the result of the Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling and a quench of the relative phase of two Raman lasers without the modulation of any of the system's parameters. We observed several higher parametric resonance tongues at integer multiples of the driving frequency and investigated the interplay between Faraday instabilities and modulation instabilities when we quench the spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate from zero-momentum phase to plane-wave phase. If the detuning is equal to zero, the wave number of combination resonance barely changes as the strength of spin-orbit coupling increases. If the detuning is not equal to zero after a quench, a single combination resonance tongue will split into two parts.

Spin and Density Modes in a Binary Fluid of Light

Clara Piekarski, Nicolas Cherroret, Tangui Aladjidi +1 more

We report the experimental observation of spin and density modes in a binary mixture of superfluids of light. A miscible Bose-Bose mixture with repulsive interactions is realized by propagating the two circular polarization components of a laser through a nonlinear hot atomic vapor in the paraxial limit. By controlling the intensity and phase of both polarizations, we selectively excite the fundamental modes of the mixture. Using a Bragg-like spectroscopy technique, we measure the dispersion relation and identify two distinct branches with different sound velocities, corresponding to the spin and density modes. At high photon density, we observe a crossing of these branches, resulting from higher order nonlinear terms, linked to the saturation of the medium's nonlinearity.

Damping of Long-Wavelength Collective Modes in Spinor Bose-Fermi Mixtures

J. H. Pixley, Xiaopeng Li, S. Das Sarma

Using an effective field theory we describe the low energy bosonic excitations in a three-dimensional ultracold mixture of spin-1 bosons and spin-1/2 fermions. We establish an interesting fermionic excitation induced generic damping of the usual undamped long-wavelength bosonic collective Goldstone modes. Two states with bosons forming either a ferromagnetic or polar superfluid are studied. The linear dispersion of the bosonic Bogoliubov excitations is preserved with a renormalized sound velocity. For the polar superfluid we find both gapless modes (density and spin) are damped, whereas in the ferromagnetic superfluid we find the density (spin) mode is (not) damped. We find that this holds for any mixture of bosons and fermions that are coupled through at least a density-density interaction. In addition, we predict the existence of the Kohn anomaly in the bosonic excitation spectrum of Bose-Fermi mixtures. We discuss the implications of our many-body interaction results for experiments on Bose-Fermi mixtures.

Faraday waves in quasi-one-dimensional superfluid Fermi-Bose mixtures

F. Kh. Abdullaev, Magnus Ögren, Mads Peter Sørensen

The generation of Faraday waves in superfluid Fermi-Bose mixtures in elongated traps is investigated. The generation of waves is achieved by periodically changing a parameter of the system in time. Two types of modulations of parameters are considered: a variation of the fermion-boson scattering length and the boson-boson scattering length. We predict the properties of the generated Faraday patterns and study the parameter regions where they can be excited.
