Abstract

We investigate the effects of quantum fluctuations on the low-energy collective modes of two-dimensional (2D) s-wave Fermi superfluids from the BCS to the Bose limit. We compare our results to recent Bragg scattering experiments in 2D box potentials, with very good agreement. We show that quantum fluctuations in the phase and modulus of the pairing order parameter are absolutely necessary to give physically acceptable chemical potential and dispersion relation of the low-energy collective mode throughout the BCS to Bose evolution. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the dispersion of the collective modes change from concave to convex as interactions are tuned from the BCS to the Bose regime, and never crosses the two-particle continuum, because arbitrarily small attractive interactions produce bound states in two dimensions.

Quantum fluctuations in the BCS-BEC crossover of two-dimensional Fermi gases

Lianyi He, Hai‐Feng Lü, Gaoqing Cao +2 more

We present a theoretical study of the ground state of the BCS-BEC crossover in dilute two-dimensional Fermi gases. While the mean-field theory provides a simple and analytical equation of state, the pressure is equal to that of a noninteracting Fermi gas in the entire BCS-BEC crossover, which is not consistent with the features of a weakly interacting Bose condensate in the BEC limit and a weakly interacting Fermi liquid in the BCS limit. The inadequacy of the two-dimensional mean-field theory indicates that the quantum fluctuations are much more pronounced than those in three dimensions. In this work, we show that the inclusion of the Gaussian quantum fluctuations naturally recovers the above features in both the BEC and the BCS limits. In the BEC limit, the missing logarithmic dependence on the boson chemical potential is recovered by the quantum fluctuations. Near the quantum phase transition from the vacuum to the BEC phase, we compare our equation of state with the known grand canonical equation of state of two-dimensional Bose gases and determine the ratio of the composite boson scattering length ${a}_{B}$ to the fermion scattering length ${a}_{2\mathrm{D}}$. We find ${a}_{B}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.56{a}_{2\mathrm{D}}$, in good agreement with the exact four-body calculation. We compare our equation of state in the BCS-BEC crossover with recent results from the quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the experimental measurements and find good agreements.

BCS–BEC crossover in a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi superfluid

Jing Zhou, Tingting Shi, Xia-Ji Liu +2 more

Abstract We study the crossover from the Bardeen–Cooper–Shrieffer regime to the Bose–Einstein-condensation regime in an anisotropic trapped quantum gas of ultracold fermionic atoms. Using an effective two-dimensional Hamiltonian with renormalized interactions between atoms and dressed molecules, we extend the Gaussian pair fluctuation theory to quasi-two-dimensional systems. The equation of state, pair size and sound velocity as well as the convexity parameters of the Goldstone mode are investigated to show how Fermi superfluidity is affected by reduced dimensionality and Gaussian fluctuations at zero temperature in a wide range of crossover. We compare our results with the recent experiment of 6 L i atomic gases and find good agreements.

Collective modes of low-dimensional superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover: Time-dependent variational analysis

Yu Long Zhou, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate collective modes and free expansions of quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional (Q1D and Q2D) ultracold Fermi gases in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We solve a superfluid order parameter equation valid for the BCS-BEC crossover by employing a time-dependent variational method. We take a trial wave function of hybrid Gaussian-parabolic type, which not only reflects the low-dimensional character of the system but also allows an essentially analytical approach for the problem. We present Q1D and Q2D criteria that are valid in various superfluid regimes and show clearly the relation between the maximum condensed particle number and the parameters of the trapping potential as well as the atom-atom interaction. We demonstrate that, due to the small particle number in Q1D and Q2D condensates, the contribution to oscillating frequencies of collective modes by the quantum pressure in the strong-confinement direction is significant and hence the Thomas-Fermi approximation cannot be used. We also show that the free expansion of Q1D and Q2D superfluid Fermi gases in the strong-confinement direction is much faster than that in the weak-confinement direction.

Quantum fluctuation effect of a two-dimensional Fermi gas with d -wave pairing

S C Wang, Tingting Shi, Wei Zhang

Abstract We investigate quantum fluctuation effects in a two-dimensional Fermi superfluid with $d_{x^2\textrm{-}y^2}$-wave pairing through an evolution from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limit to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) limit. Using the Gaussian pair fluctuation (GPF) theory beyond the mean-field approximation, we derive a modified particle number equation and solve it self-consistently with the gap equation. We find that key physical properties, including the equation of state, the compressibility, and the sound velocity, are strongly renormalized by quantum fluctuations, reflecting their crucial role near the phase transition. Both mean-field and GPF theory reveal a pronounced Lifshitz transition at zero chemical potential $\mu=0$, but occurring at different interaction strengths. As the system evolves from the BCS to BEC regime, the fluctuation-induced particle number grows rapidly and saturates near the transition point, further highlighting the importance of quantum fluctuations. We also analyze the quasiparticle excitation spectrum, which exhibits a transition from a nodal BCS regime with characteristic $C_4$ symmetry to a fully gapped BEC regime, providing direct insight into the interplay between pairing symmetry, phase transition of spectrum topology, and quantum fluctuations.

Composite bosons in the two-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover from Gaussian fluctuations

Luca Salasnich, Flavio Toigo

We study Gaussian fluctuations of the zero-temperature attractive Fermi gas in the two-dimensional (2D) BCS-BEC crossover showing that they are crucial to get a reliable equation of state in the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime of composite bosons, bound states of fermionic pairs. A low-momentum expansion up to the fourth order of the quadratic action of the fluctuating pairing field gives an ultraviolent divergent contribution of the Gaussian fluctuations to the grand potential. Performing dimensional regularization we evaluate the effective coupling constant in the beyond-mean-field grand potential. Remarkably, in the BEC regime our grand potential gives exactly the Popov's equation of state of 2D interacting bosons, and allows us to identify the scattering length ${a}_{B}$ of the interaction between composite bosons as ${a}_{B}={a}_{F}/({2}^{1/2}{e}^{1/4})=0.551...{a}_{F}$, with ${a}_{F}$ is the scattering length of fermions. Remarkably, the value from our analytical relationship between the two scattering lengths is in full agreement with that obtained by recent Monte Carlo calculations.

Quantum fluctuations in the superfluid state of the BCS-BEC crossover

Roberto B. Diener, Rajdeep Sensarma, Mohit Randeria

We determine the effects of quantum fluctuations about the $T=0$ mean-field solution of the BCS-BEC crossover in a dilute Fermi gas using the functional integral method. These fluctuations are described in terms of the zero-point motion of collective modes and the virtual scattering of gapped quasiparticles. We calculate their effects on various measurable properties, including chemical potential, ground-state energy, the gap, the speed of sound and the Landau critical velocity. At unitarity, we find excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo and experimental results. In the BCS limit, we show analytically that we obtain Fermi liquid interaction corrections to thermodynamics including the Hartree shift. In the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit, we show that the theory leads to an approximate description of the reduction of the scattering length for bosonic molecules and also obtain quantum depletion of the Lee-Yang form. At the end of the paper, we describe a method to include feedback of quantum fluctuations into the gap equation, and discuss the problems of self-consistent calculations in satisfying Goldstone's theorem and obtaining ultraviolet finite results at unitarity.
