On the continuous Zauner conjecture

Abstract

In a recent paper by S. Pandey, V. Paulsen, J. Prakash, and M. Rahaman, the authors studied the entanglement breaking quantum channels $\Phi_t:\mbb{C}^{d\times d} \to \mbb{C}^{d \times d}$ for $t \in [-\frac{1}{d^2-1}, \frac{1}{d+1}]$ defined by $\Phi_t(X) = tX+ (1-t)\tr(X) \frac{1}{d}I$. They proved that Zauner's conjecture is equivalent to the statement that entanglement breaking rank of $\Phi_{\frac{1}{d+1}}$ is $d^2$. The authors made the extended conjecture that $\ebr(\Phi_t)=d^2$ for every $t \in [0, \frac{1}{d+1}]$ and proved it in dimensions 2 and 3. In this paper we prove that for any $t \in [-\frac{1}{d^2-1}, \frac{1}{d+1}] \setminus\{0\}$ the equality $\ebr(\Phi_t)=d^2$ is equivalent to the existence of a pair of informationally-complete unit-norm tight frames $\{|x_i\ra\}_{i=1}^{d^2}, \{|y_i\ra\}_{i=1}^{d^2}$ in $\mbb{C}^d $ which are mutually unbiased in the following sense: for any $i\neq j$ it holds that $|\la x_i|y_j\ra|^2 = \frac{1-t}{d}$ and $|\la x_i|y_i\ra|^2 = \frac{t(d^2-1)+1}{d}$. Moreover, it follows that $|\la x_i|x_j\ra\la y_i|y_j\ra|=|t|$ for $i\neq j$. However, our numerical searches for solutions were not successful in dimensions 4 and 5 for values of $t$ other than $0$ or $\frac{1}{d+1}$.

A sharp norm inequality for entanglement-breaking channels

Eran Kopel

For a channel $Φ$ on $M_d$ written in the generalised Bloch parameterisation $r \mapsto Ar+c$, we prove that entanglement breaking implies $\|A\|_*^2 + \frac{d(d-1)}{2}\,|c|^2 \;\le\; (d-1)^2 ,$ where $\|\cdot\|_*$ denotes the nuclear norm. Read on the Choi state of the channel, the inequality is an instance of the covariance-matrix criterion of Gittsovich et al.; what is added here is an elementary proof in Holevo form and a complete description of the equality cases. Apart from the constant channel onto a pure state, which shows that the coefficient $d(d-1)/2$ cannot be increased, equality holds exactly for the measure-and-prepare channels with rank-one effects $α_k|e_k\rangle\langle e_k|$ and pure outputs $|ψ_k\rangle\langleψ_k|$ whose overlaps are an affine image of those of the measurement directions, $|\langleψ_j|ψ_k\rangle|^2 = P + (1-P)\,(d|\langle e_j|e_k\rangle|^2 - 1)/(d-1)$ for a common $P = \mathrm{Tr}\,Φ(\mathbf{1}/d)^2$. These include the completely dephasing channel, the re-preparation channel of every rank-one POVM, a one-parameter family interpolating between dephasing and the constant channel, and non-unital non-projective examples already at $d = 2$. The qubit case reads $\|A\|_*^2+|c|^2\le1$ and extends to full rank a rank-two condition of Ruskai. The proof sharpens Ruskai's bound $\|A\|_*\le1$ by retaining the POVM completeness relation $\sum_k f_k=0$, which her argument discards; this recentres $A$ from a second moment into a cross-covariance, and is the entire content of the improvement.

Towards a classification of incomplete Gabor POVMs in $\mathbb{C}^d$

Assaf Goldberger, Shujie Kang, Kasso A. Okoudjou

Every (full) finite Gabor system generated by a unit-norm vector $g\in \mathbb{C}^d$ is a finite unit-norm tight frame (FUNTF), and can thus be associated with a (Gabor) positive operator valued measure (POVM). Such a POVM is informationally complete if the $d^2$ corresponding rank one matrices form a basis for the space of $d\times d$ matrices. A sufficient condition for this to happen is that the POVM is symmetric, which is equivalent to the fact that the associated Gabor frame is an equiangular tight frame (ETF). The existence of Gabor ETF is an important special case of the Zauner conjecture. It is known that generically all Gabor FUNTFs lead to informationally complete POVMs. In this paper, we initiate a classification of non-complete Gabor POVMs. In the process we establish some seemingly simple facts about the eigenvalues of the Gram matrix of the rank one matrices generated by a finite Gabor frame. We also use these results to construct some sets of $d^2$ unit vectors in $\mathbb{C}^d$ with a relatively smaller number of distinct inner products.

Pauli Diagonal Channels Constant on Axes

Michael Nathanson, Mary Beth Ruskai

We define and study the properties of channels which are analogous to unital qubit channels in several ways. A full treatment can be given only when the dimension d is a prime power, in which case each of the (d+1) mutually unbiased bases (MUB) defines an axis. Along each axis the channel looks like a depolarizing channel, but the degree of depolarization depends on the axis. When d is not a prime power, some of our results still hold, particularly in the case of channels with one symmetry axis. We describe the convex structure of this class of channels and the subclass of entanglement breaking channels. We find new bound entangled states for d = 3. For these channels, we show that the multiplicativity conjecture for maximal output p-norm holds for p=2. We also find channels with behavior not exhibited by unital qubit channels, including two pairs of orthogonal bases with equal output entropy in the absence of symmetry. This provides new numerical evidence for the additivity of minimal output entropy.
