Topological Order of Quantum Gravity in $AdS_3$ Spacetime

Abstract

Topological order is a new type order that beyond Landau's symmetry breaking theory. It has some interesting properties, such as producing quasi-particles with fractional quantum numbers and fractional/Fermi statistics, robust gapless boundary modes and emergent gauge excitations. In this essay, we will show that the quantum gravity in $AdS_3$ spacetime can also have topological orders. Actually the theory has all the three features that define the topological order. We conjecture that quantum gravity in four dimension can also have topological orders.

The topological order of the space

Topological order is a new type order that beyond Landau's symmetry breaking theory. The topological entanglement entropy provides a universal quantum number to characterize the topological order in a system. The topological entanglement entropy of the BTZ black hole was calculated and found that it coincides with that for fractional quantum Hall state. So the BTZ black holes have the same topological order with the fractional quantum Hall state. We conjecture that black holes in higher dimensions also have topological orders. Next we want to study the topological order of ordinary spaces which can be described by spin network states in loop quantum gravity. We advise to bring in the methods and results in string-net condensation to loop quantum gravity to solve some difficult problems.

The topological order in loop quantum gravity

Jingbo Wang

Topological order (long-range entanglement) is a new type of order that beyond Landau's symmetry breaking theory. This concept plays important roles in modern condensed matter physics. The topological entanglement entropy provides a universal quantum number to characterize the topological order in a system. The topological entanglement entropy of the BTZ black hole was calculated and found that it coincides with that for fractional quantum Hall states. So the BTZ black hole has the same topological order with the fractional quantum Hall state. We show that the four dimensional black hole can also have topological order, by showing that the topological entanglement entropy of black holes is non-zero in loop quantum gravity. We also consider the Hamiltonian constraint in loop quantum gravity. By comparing with the BF theory, we found that the physical Hilbert space for loop quantum gravity is degenerate on non-trivial manifold, which indicate the existence of topological order in loop quantum gravity. We advise to bring in the methods and results in string-net condensation to loop quantum gravity to solve some difficult problems.

Topological Order in Physics

Ravi Karki

In general, we know that there are four states of matter solid, liquid, gas and plasma. But there are much more states of matter. For e. g. there are ferromagnetic states of matter as revealed by the phenomenon of magnetization and superfluid states defined by the phenomenon of zero viscosity. The various phases in our colorful world are so rich that it is amazing that they can be understood systematically by the symmetry breaking theory of Landau. Topological phenomena define the topological order at macroscopic level. Topological order need new mathematical framework to describe it. More recently it is found that at microscopic level topological order is due to the long range quantum entanglement, just like the fermions fluid is due to the fermion-pair condensation. Long range quantum entanglement leads to many amazing emergent phenomena, such as fractional quantum numbers, non- Abelian statistics ad perfect conducting boundary channels. It can even provide a unified origin of light and electron i.e. gauge interactions and Fermi statistics. Light waves (gauge fields) are fluctuations of long range entanglement and electron (fermion) are defect of long range entanglements. The Himalayan Physics Vol. 6 & 7, April 2017 (108-111)

TOPOLOGICAL ORDERS IN RIGID STATES

Xiao-Gang Wen

We study a new kind of ordering — topological order — in rigid states (the states with no local gapless excitations). We concentrate on characterization of the different topological orders. As an example we discuss in detail chiral spin states of 2 + 1 dimensional spin systems. Chiral spin states are described by the topological Chern-Simons theories in the continuum limit. We show that the topological orders can be characterized by a non-Abelian gauge structure over the moduli space which parametrizes a family of the model Hamiltonians supporting topologically ordered ground states. In 2 + 1 dimensions, the non-Abelian gauge structure determines possible fractional statistics of the quasi-particle excitations over the topologically ordered ground states. The dynamics of the low lying global excitations is shown to be independent of random spatial dependent perturbations. The ground state degeneracy and the non-Abelian gauge structures discussed in this paper are very robust, even against those perturbations that break translation symmetry. We also discuss the symmetry properties of the degenerate ground states of chiral spin states. We find that some degenerate ground states of chiral spin states on torus carry non-trivial quantum numbers of the 90° rotation.

Topological and Quantum order—beyond Landau’s Theories

Xiao-Gang Wen

According to the principle of emergence, the properties of material are mainly determined by how the atoms are organized in the material. Such organization is formally called order. The vast range of materials is a result of the rich variety of orders that atoms can have. For a long time, it has been believed that all orders are described as symmetry breaking. A comprehensive theory for phases and phase transitions is developed here based on the symmetry breaking picture. The existence of FQH states (and superconducting states) indicates that there are new states of matter that cannot be described as symmetry breaking. Completely new theory is needed to describe those new states of matter. This chapter outlines the theory of topological order and theories of quantum order for the new states of matter, such as FQH states. Many new concepts and new language, such as topology-dependent degeneracy, fractional statistics, edge states, etc, are introduced to describe new states of matter.

Topological Order: From Long-Range Entangled Quantum Matter to a Unified Origin of Light and Electrons

Xiao-Gang Wen

We review the progress in the last 20–30 years, during which we discovered that there are many new phases of matter that are beyond the traditional Landau symmetry breaking theory. We discuss new “topological” phenomena, such as topological degeneracy that reveals the existence of those new phases—topologically ordered phases. Just like zero viscosity defines the superfluid order, the new “topological” phenomena define the topological order at macroscopic level. More recently, we found that at the microscopical level, topological order is due to long-range quantum entanglements. Long-range quantum entanglements lead to many amazing emergent phenomena, such as fractional charges and fractional statistics. Long-range quantum entanglements can even provide a unified origin of light and electrons; light is a fluctuation of long-range entanglements, and electrons are defects in long-range entanglements.
