Abstract

We study the formation of local magnetic moments in the strongly correlated Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory and associate peculiarities of the temperature dependence of local charge ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c}$ and spin ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{s}$ susceptibilities with different stages of local moment formation. The local maximum of the temperature dependence of the charge susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c}$ is associated with the beginning of local magnetic moment formation, while the minimum of the susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c}$ and double occupation, as well as the low-temperature boundary of the plateau of the effective local magnetic moment ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\mathrm{eff}}^{2}=T{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{s}$ temperature dependence are connected with the full formation of local moments. We also obtain the interaction dependence of the Kondo temperature ${T}_{K}$, which is compared to the fingerprint criterion of Chalupa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 056403 (2021)]. Near the Mott transition the two criteria coincide, while further away from the Mott transition the fingerprint criterion somewhat overestimates the Kondo temperature. The relation of the observed features to the behavior of eigenvectors/eigenvalues of fermionic frequency-resolved charge susceptibility and divergences of irreducible vertices is discussed.

Fingerprints of the Local Moment Formation and its Kondo Screening in the Generalized Susceptibilities of Many-Electron Problems

Patrick Chalupa-Gantner, Thomas Schäfer, M. Reitner +3 more

We identify the precise hallmarks of the local magnetic moment formation and its Kondo screening in the frequency structure of the generalized charge susceptibility. The sharpness of our identification even pinpoints an alternative criterion to determine the Kondo temperature of strongly correlated systems on the two-particle level, which only requires calculations at the lowest Matsubara frequency. We showcase its strength by applying it to the single impurity and the periodic Anderson model as well as to the Hubbard model. Our results represent a significant progress for the general understanding of quantum field theory at the two-particle level and allow for tracing the limits of the physics captured by perturbative approaches for correlated systems.

Intricately entangled spin and charge diffusion and the coherence-incoherence crossover in the high-dimensional Hubbard model

Gopal Prakash, Syed R. Hassan, M. S. Laad +2 more

Abstract Correlation-driven metal–insulator transitions and temperature-driven coherence–incoherence crossovers strongly influence the dynamical responses of correlated electron systems. Motivated by recent experimental probes of spin and charge excitations, we investigate the real-frequency local spin and charge dynamical susceptibilities of the one-band Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), employing numerical renormalization group (NRG) impurity solvers. We analyze both the interaction-driven transition at half filling and the temperature evolution in the doped regime proximate to the Mott insulator. To characterize low-energy relaxation processes within the local DMFT framework, we examine normalized dissipative spectra constructed from the imaginary parts of the local susceptibilities. From these spectra we extract characteristic fluctuation scales and track their evolution with interaction strength, temperature, and band filling. At half filling, the spin and charge channels exhibit qualitatively distinct low-frequency structures governed by symmetry and correlation effects. In the doped Mott regime, we find that spin and charge fluctuations reorganize on parametrically different temperature scales, signaling a separation of local coherence scales within a purely local theory. We emphasize that our analysis pertains to on-site dynamical relaxation within DMFT rather than hydrodynamic transport. Nevertheless, the distinct temperature evolution of spin and charge fluctuation scales is qualitatively consistent with multistage crossover behavior observed in transport quantities. These results highlight how local two-particle dynamics reorganize across interaction- and temperature-driven crossovers near the Mott transition.

Excitations, Two-Particle Correlations and Ordering Phenomena in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems from a Local Point of View

Sebastian Schmitt

Strongly correlated electron systems show a rich variety of interesting physical phenomena. However, their theoretical description poses a highly non-trivial task, and even the simplest models cannot be solved exactly. In this thesis the intricate behavior of the single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) and the Hubbard model is investigated. The main emphasis is laid on two-particle Green functions of these systems. To this end, existing approximation schemes are extended to be capable of treating susceptibilities as well. The quality and range of applicability of these approximations is discussed in detail. The physical pictures behind the phenomena encountered in these systems are introduced. A prominent many-body effect is the emergence of temperature dependent low energy quasiparticles in both models. The occurrence of such excitations is a result of the dynamical screening of local magnetic moments, a characteristic feature of the Kondo effect. It is argued, that within the presented approximations, the low temperature phase of these models can usually be described as a Fermi liquid. As a counterexample, the Hubbard model is shown to exhibit pronounced non-Fermi liquid behavior in situations, where a van Hove singularity in the non-interacting density of states is found in the vicinity of the Fermi level. The magnetic properties of the Hubbard model are discussed in view of the two archetypical pictures of magnetism: local moment magnetism and itinerant Stoner-magnetism. Critical temperatures for antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic and incommensurate phase transitions are calculated, and the influence of the lattice structure and frustration is examined. In strongly correlated metallic situations, the complicated competition between Kondo-screening and local moment magnetism can lead to a reentrant behavior of the N\'eel temperature. A direct signature of the Kondo effect in the Hubbard model is found in the dynamic magnetic susceptibility, where a localized collective mode emerges at very low temperatures. It is connected to the breakup of a singlet formed by the local moments with their Kondo-screening cloud, and consequently the excitation energy is of the order of the low energy scale T*.

Generic susceptibilities of the half-filled Hubbard model in infinite dimensions

Carsten Raas, Götz Silvester Uhrig

Around a metal-to-insulator transition driven by repulsive interaction (Mott transition) the single-particle excitations and the collective excitations are equally important. Here we present results for the generic susceptibilities at zero temperature in the half-filled Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. Profiting from the high resolution of dynamic density-matrix renormalization at all energies, results for the charge, spin, and Cooper-pair susceptibilities in the metallic and the insulating phase are computed. In the insulating phase, an almost saturated local magnetic moment appears. In the metallic phase a pronounced low-energy peak is found in the spin response. It is the precursor of the magnetic moment in the insulator.

Local quantum critical behavior in magnetic Kondo impurity models with partially screened moment

Guang-Ming Zhang, Yu, Lu

In the strong coupling limit, an effective resonant level model is derived for the spin-1 underscreened Kondo impurity model. A local quantum critical behavior is induced by the formation of a bound state with partially screened magnetic moment, displaying a residual $Z_2$ symmetry, leading to a $δ$-resonance at the Fermi level in the impurity spectral function. As a consequence, a logarithmic singularity appears in the real part of the impurity dynamic spin susceptibility as a function of $\max (ω, T)$, with $ω$ as frequency, $T$ temperature. A small magnetic field breaks this $Z_2$ symmetry and suppresses the singularity. We also discuss the possible manifestation of such a quantum critical behavior in the spin-1/2 two Kondo impurity model and the single quantum dot system with even electron occupation.

Signatures of spin and charge energy scales in the local moment and specific heat of the half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model

Thereza Paiva, Richard T. Scalettar, Carey Huscroft +1 more

Local moment formation driven by the on-site repulsion U is one of the most fundamental features in the Hubbard model. At the simplest level, the temperature dependence of the local moment is expected to have a single structure at $T\ensuremath{\sim}U,$ reflecting the suppression of the double occupancy. In this paper we show low-temperature quantum Monte Carlo data for half-filling which emphasize that the local moment also has a signature at a lower energy scale which previously had been thought to characterize only the temperatures below which moments on different sites begin to correlate locally. We discuss implications of these results for the structure of the specific heat, and connections to quasiparticle resonance and pseudogap formation in the density of states.
