Abstract

Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians provide a simple picture for inspecting dissipative systems with natural or induced gain and loss. We investigate the Floquet dynamical phase transition in the dissipative periodically time-driven XY and extended XY models, where the imaginary terms represent the physical gain and loss during the interacting processes with the environment. The time-independent effective Floquet non-Hermitian Hamiltonians disclose three regions by analyzing the non-Hermitian gap: pure real gap (real eigenvalues), pure imaginary gap, and complex gap. We show that each region of the system can be distinguished by the complex geometrical nonadiabatic phase. We have discovered that in the presence of dissipation, the Floquet dynamical phase transitions (FDPTs) still exist in the region where the time-independent effective Floquet non-Hermitian Hamiltonians reveal real eigenvalues. Opposed to expectations based on earlier works on quenched systems, our findings show that the existence of the non-Hermitian topological phase is not an essential condition for dissipative FDPTs (DFDPTs). We also demonstrate the range of driven frequency, over which the DFDPTs occur, narrows down by increasing the dissipation coupling and shrinks to a single point at the critical value of dissipation. Moreover, quantization and jumps of the dynamical geometric phase reveals the topological characteristic feature of DFDPTs in the real gap region where confined to exceptional points.

Floquet dynamical quantum phase transition in the extended XY model: Nonadiabatic to adiabatic topological transition

Sara Zamani, Rouhollah Jafari, A. Langari

We investigate both pure and mixed states Floquet dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) in the periodically time-dependent extended XY model. We exactly show that the proposed Floquet Hamiltonian of interacting spins can be expressed as a sum of noninteracting quasispins imposed by an effective time dependent magnetic field (Schwinger-Rabi model). The calculated Chern number indicates that there is a topological transition from the nonadiabatic to adiabatic regime. In the adiabatic regime, the quasispins trace the time dependent effective magnetic field and then oscillate between spin up and down states. While in the nonadiabatic regime, the quasispins cannot follow the time dependent effective magnetic field and feel an average magnetic field. We find the range of driving frequency over which the quasispins experience adiabatic cyclic processes. Moreover, we obtain the exact expression of the Loschmidt amplitude and generalized Loschmidt amplitude of the proposed Floquet system. The results represent that both pure and mixed states dynamical phase transition occurs when the system evolves adiabatically. In other words, the minimum required driving frequency for the appearance of Floquet DQPT is equal to the threshold frequency needed for transition from the nonadiabatic to adiabatic regime.

Dissipative dynamics in open XXZ Richardson-Gaudin models

Pieter W. Claeys, Austen Lamacraft

In specific open systems with collective dissipation the Liouvillian can be mapped to a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We here consider such a system where the Liouvillian is mapped to an XXZ Richardson-Gaudin integrable model and detail its exact Bethe ansatz solution. While no longer Hermitian, the Hamiltonian is $\text{pseudo-Hermitian}/\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetric, and as the strength of the coupling to the environment is increased, the spectrum in a fixed symmetry sector changes from a broken pseudo-Hermitian phase with complex conjugate eigenvalues to a pseudo-Hermitian phase with real eigenvalues, passing through a series of exceptional points and associated dissipative quantum phase transitions. The homogeneous limit supports a nontrivial steady state, and away from this limit this state gives rise to a slow logarithmic growth of the decay rate (spectral gap) with system size. Using the exact solution, it is furthermore shown how at large coupling strengths the ratio of the imaginary to the real part of the eigenvalues becomes approximately quantized in the remaining symmetry sectors.

Floquet dynamical quantum phase transitions

Kai Yang, Longwen Zhou, Wenchao Ma +8 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are manifested by time-domain nonanalytic behaviors of many-body systems. Introducing a quench is so far understood as a typical scenario to induce DQPTs. In this work, we discover a type of DQPTs, termed Floquet DQPTs, as intrinsic features of time-periodic systems. Floquet DQPTs occur within each period of continuous driving, without the need for any quenches. In particular, in a harmonically driven spin chain model, we find analytically the existence of Floquet DQPTs in and only in a parameter regime hosting a certain nontrivial Floquet topological phase. The Floquet DQPTs are further characterized by a dynamical topological invariant defined as the winding number of the Pancharatnam geometric phase versus quasimomentum. These findings are experimentally demonstrated with a single spin in diamond. This work thus opens a door for future studies of DQPTs in connection with topological matter.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian lattices

Longwen Zhou, Qinghai Wang, Hailong Wang +1 more

In closed quantum systems, dynamical phase transitions are identified by the nonanalytic behavior of the return probability as a function of time. In this work, we study the nonunitary dynamics following quenches across exceptional points in a non-Hermitian lattice realizable by optical resonators. Dynamical quantum phase transitions with topological signatures are found when an isolated exceptional point is crossed during the quench. A winding number defined by a real, noncyclic geometric phase is introduced, whose value features quantized jumps at critical times of these phase transitions and remains constant elsewhere, playing the role of a topological order parameter. This work provides a simple framework to study dynamical and topological quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems.

Realizing Exceptional Points by Floquet Dissipative Couplings in Thermal Atoms

Zimo Zhang, Fengbo Zhang, Zhongxiao Xu +3 more

Exceptional degeneracies and generically complex spectra of non-Hermitian systems are at the heart of numerous phenomena absent in the Hermitian realm. Recently, it was suggested that Floquet dissipative coupling in the space-time domain may provide a novel mechanism to drive intriguing spectral topology with no static analogs, though its experimental investigation in quantum systems remains elusive. We demonstrate such Floquet dissipative coupling in an ensemble of thermal atoms interacting with two spatially separated optical beams, and observe an anomalous anti-parity-time symmetry phase transition at an exception point far from the phase-transition threshold of the static counterpart. Our protocol sets the stage for Floquet engineering of non-Hermitian topological spectra, and for engineering new quantum phases that cannot exist in static systems.
