Multipartite spatial entanglement generated by concurrent nonlinear processes

Abstract

Continuous-variable multipartite entanglement is a key resource for quantum technologies. This paper considers the multipartite entanglement generated in separated spatial modes of the same light beam by three different parametric sources: a standard ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ medium pumped by two pumps, a single-pump nonlinear photonic crystal, and a doubly pumped nonlinear photonic crystal. These sources have in common the coexistence of several concurrent nonlinear processes in the same medium, which allows the generation of nonstandard three- and four-mode couplings. We test the genuine nature of the multipartite entangled states thereby generated in a common framework, using criteria based both on proper bounds for the variances of nonlocal observables and on the positive partial transpose criterion. The relative simplicity of these states allows a (hopefully) useful comparison of the different inseparability tests.

Engineering multipartite entanglement in nonlinear photonic crystals

A. Gatti

We study the quantum state of twin photons generated by parametric down-conversion in a two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal, driven by a dual pump beam. The interplay between the grating of the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ nonlinear response and the transverse spatial modulation of the pump opens a rich scenario of possibilities for controlling the quantum state. We focus on a spatial resonance condition between the pump and the nonlinear grating, where a quadripartite entangled state is generated in proper light modes. The device is shown to implement the mixing of a pair of independent two-mode squeezed states onto four separate spatial modes, without the need of any external beam-splitter. Remarkably, both the squeezing parameters and the mixing coefficients can be reconfigured by modulating the relative phase and intensity of the two pumps, enabling thus the generation of a variety of quantum states in a single device.

Four-mode entangled states in coupled nonlinear optical processes and teleportation of two-mode entangled CV state

A. S. Chirkin, M. Yu. Saygin

We consider the forming of a four-mode entangled state for continuous variables (CV) in coupled optical parametric processes. The processes comprise one down-conversion process and two up-conversion ones. Such interactions can simultaneously be realized in a single aperiodical nonlinear photonic crystal. To reveal the entanglement between continuous variables at generated frequencies, the different criteria of the separability have been applied. We also consider teleportation of two-mode entangled CV state using the created four-mode state. It is shown that in the proposed scheme the fidelity of entangled CV teleportation can be almost perfect.

Heralded generation of multipartite entanglement for one photon by using a single two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal

J. Shi, Ping Xu, M. L. Zhong +6 more

We propose a compact scheme for the heralded generation of single-photon multipartite entanglement by using a single two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal. Studies have shown that by appropriate structure design, the single-photon entanglement shared among three spatially distinct optical modes can be generated through three concurrent spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes by using the other photon in an identical spatial mode as a trigger. Furthermore, we analyze the entanglement of such heralded single-photon tripartite W-type state theoretically. This method can be expanded for the heralded single-photon N-partite entanglement generation. This compact and stable quantum light source may act as a key ingredient in quantum information science.

Continuous variable multipartite entanglement in cascaded nonlinearities

Goutam Misra, Ashok Kumar

Abstract Multipartite entanglement is the crucial requirement for quantum information processing, quantum computation, quantum communication and quantum sensing. Therefore, the generation and characterization of such entanglement are primary goals in quantum technologies. Here we theoretically study the multipartite continuous-variable quadrature entanglement generated by three symmetric cascaded nonlinear optical systems. Such cascaded systems allow us to study the bipartite, tripartite and quadripartite entanglement. We use different continuous-variable entanglement criteria to characterize the entanglement. We observe that only a few bipartite combinations show the entanglement out of all possible combinations, while most tripartite combinations are entangled. Interestingly such a system depicts a full quadripartite entanglement. Moreover, we show that, unlike the quadrature sum-variance entanglement criterion, the negative partial transpose criterion can show the entanglement in most cases. The present comprehensive analysis of the generation and characterization of the continuous-variable entanglement with cascaded systems would pave the way to realizing a complex quantum network.

Engineering multipartite coupling in doubly pumped parametric down-conversion processes

A. Gatti, E. Brambilla, Ottavia Jedrkiewicz

We investigate the quantum state generated by optical parametric down-conversion in a ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ medium driven by two noncollinear light modes. The analysis shows the emergence of multimode, namely, three- or four-mode, entangled states in a subset of the spatiotemporal modes generated by the process. These appear as bright spots against the background fluorescence, providing an interesting analogy with the phenomenology recently observed in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals. We study two realistic setups. (1) Noncritical phase matching in a periodically poled lithium tantalate slab, characterized by a three-mode entangled state. (2) A type I setup in a beta-barium borate crystal, where the spatial walk-off between the two pumps can be exploited to make a transition to a four-mode entangled state. In both cases, we show that the properties of the state can be controlled by modulating the relative intensity of two pump waves, making the device a versatile tool for quantum state engineering.

Multi-Mode Correlation in a Concurrent Parametric Amplifier

Hailong Wang, Yunpeng Shi

A concurrent parametric amplifier consisting of two pump beams is used to investigate the possibility of generating multi-mode correlation and entanglement. The existence of three-mode entanglement is demonstrated by analyzing the violation degree of three-mode entanglement criteria, including the sufficient criterion, i.e., two-condition and optimal single-condition criterion, and necessary and sufficient criterion, i.e., positivity under partial transposition (PPT) criterion. Besides, two-mode entanglement generated from any pair is also studied by using the Duan criterion and PPT criterion. We find that three-mode entanglement and two-mode entanglement of the two pairs are present in the whole parameter region. Our results pave the way for the realization and application of multi-mode correlation and entanglement based on the concurrent parametric amplifiers.
