Abstract

Non-Hermitian skin effect, which refers to the phenomenon that an extensive number of eigenstates are localized at the boundary, has been widely studied in lattice models and experimentally observed in several classical systems. In this work, we predict that the existence of the non-Hermitian skin effect in the dissipative ultracold fermions with spin-orbit coupling, a continuous model that has been implemented by the Hong-Kong group in a recent experiment. This skin effect is robust against the variation of external parameters and trapping potentials. We further reveal a dynamic sticky effect in our system, which has a common physical origin with the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our work paves the way for studying novel physical responses of non-Hermitian skin effect in quantum systems.

Theoretical prediction of a non-Hermitian skin effect in ultracold-atom systems

Sibo Guo, Chenxiao Dong, Fu‐Chun Zhang +2 more

The authors demonstrate a robust non-Hermitian skin effect in spin-orbit-coupled fermions with dissipation, which has been implemented in a recent experiment. They also reveal an anomalous dynamic phenomenon named the dynamic sticky effect, which shares the same physical origin as the non-Hermitian skin effect.

Engineering non-Hermitian skin effect with band topology in ultracold gases

Lihong Zhou, Haowei Li, Wei Yi +1 more

Abstract Non-Hermitian skin effect(NHSE) describes a unique non-Hermitian phenomenon that all eigen-modes are localized near the boundary, and has profound impact on a wide range of bulk properties. In particular, topological systems with NHSE have stimulated extensive research interests recently, given the fresh theoretical and experimental challenges therein. Here we propose a readily implementable scheme for achieving NHSE with band topology in ultracold gases. Specifically, the scheme realizes the one-dimensional optical Raman lattice with two types of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and an additional laser-induced dissipation. By tuning the dissipation and the SOC strengths, NHSE and band topology can be individually controlled such that they can coexist in a considerable parameter regime. To identify the topological phase in the presence of NHSE, we have restored the bulk-boundary correspondence by invoking the non-Bloch band theory, and discussed the dynamic signals for detection. Our work serves as a guideline for engineering topological lattices with NHSE in the highly tunable environment of cold atoms, paving the way for future studies of exotic non-Hermitian physics in a genuine quantum many-body setting.

Non-Hermitian skin effect in periodically driven dissipative ultracold atoms

Zhao-Fan Cai, Tao Liu, Zhongmin Yang

The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), characterized by the collapse of bulk-band eigenstates into the localized boundary modes of the systems, is one of most striking properties in the field of non-Hermitian physics. Unique physical phenomena related to the NHSE have attracted a great deal of interest; however, their experimental realization usually requires nonreciprocal hopping, which faces a great challenge in ultracold-atom systems. In this work we propose the realization of the NHSE in a one-dimensional optical lattice by periodically driven ultracold atoms in the presence of staggered atomic loss. By studying the effective Floquet Hamiltonian in the high-frequency approximation, we reveal the underlying mechanism for the periodic-driving-induced NHSE. We find that the robust NHSE can be tuned by the driving phase, which is manifested by the dynamical localization. Most remarkably, we uncover the periodic-driving-induced critical skin effect for two coupled chains with different driving phases, accompanied by the appearance of size-dependent topological in-gap modes. Our study provides a feasible way to observe the NHSE and explore the corresponding unique physical phenomena due to the interplay of non-Hermiticity and many-body statistics in ultracold-atom systems.

Non-Hermitian Skin Effect In Periodically-Driven Dissipative Ultracold Atoms

Non-Hermitian skin effect in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Haowei Li, Xiaoling Cui, Wei Yi

We study a Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold atoms subject to a non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupling, where the system acquires the non-Hermitian skin effect under the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and laser-induced atom loss. The presence of the non-Hermitian skin effect is confirmed through its key signatures in terms of the spectral winding under the periodic boundary condition, the accumulation of eigen wavefunctions at boundaries under an open boundary condition, and bulk dynamics signaled by a directional flow. We show that bulk dynamics, in particular, serves as a convenient signal for experimental detection. The impact of interaction and trapping potentials is also discussed based on the non-Hermitian Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Our work demonstrates that the non-Hermitian skin effect and its rich implications in topology, dynamics, and beyond are well within the reach of current cold-atom experiments.

Dynamical suppression of many-body non-Hermitian skin effect in anyonic systems

Yi Qin, Ching Hua Lee, Linhu Li

The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is a fascinating phenomenon in nonequilibrium systems where eigenstates massively localize at the systems’ boundaries, pumping (quasi-)particles loaded in these systems unidirectionally to the boundaries. Its interplay with many-body effects has been widely explored recently, and inter-particle repulsion or Fermi degeneracy pressure have been shown to limit the boundary accumulation induced by the NHSE both in their eigensolutions and dynamics. However, in this work we find that anyonic statistics can even more profoundly affect the NHSE dynamics, suppressing or even reversing the state dynamics against the localizing direction of the NHSE. This phenomenon is found to be more pronounced when more particles are involved. The spreading of quantum information in this system shows even more exotic phenomena, where NHSE affects only the information dynamics for a thermal ensemble, but not that for a single initial state. Our results open up a new avenue on exploring novel non-Hermitian phenomena arisen from the interplay between NHSE and anyonic statistics, and can potentially be demonstrated in ultracold atomic quantum simulators and quantum computers. Anyons are a general class of particles with unusual statistics beyond conventional bosons and fermions. In this work, the authors reveal that anyonic statistics can profoundly affect the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) dynamically, suppressing or even reversing the NHSE-induced unidirectional evolution of both state dynamics and quantum information spreading, while keeping qualitatively the same skin-localization of static eigensolutions.
