Abstract

This paper studies the critical behavior of the 3d classical O (N) ( N ) model with a boundary. Recently, one of us established that upon treating N N as a continuous variable, there exists a critical value N_c > 2 N c > 2 such that for 2 \leq N < N_c 2 ≤ N < N c the model exhibits a new extraordinary-log boundary universality class, if the symmetry preserving interactions on the boundary are enhanced. N_c N c is determined by a ratio of universal amplitudes in the normal universality class, where instead a symmetry breaking field is applied on the boundary. We study the normal universality class using the numerical conformal bootstrap. We find truncated solutions to the crossing equation that indicate N_c \approx 5 N c ≈ 5 . Additionally, we use semi-definite programming to place rigorous bounds on the boundary CFT data of interest to conclude that N_c > 3 N c > 3 , under a certain positivity assumption which we check in various perturbative limits.

Boundary Criticality of the 3D O( N ) Model: From Normal to Extraordinary

Francesco Parisen Toldin, Max A. Metlitski

It was recently realized that the three-dimensional O(N) model possesses an extraordinary boundary universality class for a finite range of N≥2. For a given N, the existence and universal properties of this class are predicted to be controlled by certain amplitudes of the normal universality class, where one applies an explicit symmetry breaking field to the boundary. In this Letter, we study the normal universality class for N=2, 3 using Monte Carlo simulations on an improved lattice model and extract these universal amplitudes. Our results are in good agreement with direct Monte Carlo studies of the extraordinary universality class serving as a nontrivial quantitative check of the connection between the normal and extraordinary classes.

A plane defect in the 3d O(N) model

Abijith Krishnan, Max A. Metlitski

It was recently found that the classical 3d O (N) ( N ) model in the semi-infinite geometry can exhibit an “extraordinary-log” boundary universality class, where the spin-spin correlation function on the boundary falls off as \langle \vec{S}(x) \cdot \vec{S}(0)\rangle \sim \frac{1}{(\log x)^q} ⟨ S → ( x ) ⋅ S → ( 0 ) ⟩ ∼ 1 ( log x ) q . This universality class exists for a range 2 ≤ N < N_c 2 ≤ N < N c and Monte-Carlo simulations and conformal bootstrap indicate N_c > 3 N c > 3 . In this work, we extend this result to the 3d O (N) ( N ) model in an infinite geometry with a plane defect. We use renormalization group (RG) to show that in this case the extraordinary-log universality class is present for any finite N ≥2 N ≥ 2 . We additionally show, in agreement with our RG analysis, that the line of defect fixed points which is present at N = ∞ N = ∞ is lifted to the ordinary, special (no defect) and extraordinary-log universality classes by 1/N 1 / N corrections. We study the “central charge” a a for the O(N) O ( N ) model in the boundary and interface geometries and provide a non-trivial detailed check of an a a -theorem by Jensen and O’Bannon. Finally, we revisit the problem of the O (N)

Studying 3D O(N) Surface CFT on the Fuzzy Sphere

Jiechao Feng, Taige Wang

Boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) provides a universal framework for critical phenomena in the presence of boundaries. We determine BCFT data for the normal and ordinary boundary universality classes of the $1+1$-dimensional boundaries of the $2+1$-dimensional $O(2)$ and $O(3)$ Wilson-Fisher fixed points, realized microscopically by a bilayer Heisenberg model on the fuzzy sphere. Using the fuzzy-sphere state-operator correspondence, we obtain boundary operator spectra, identify low-lying boundary primary operators, extract operator-product-expansion (OPE) data, and estimate the boundary central charges for both boundary conditions. For the normal boundary condition, the universal amplitudes $a_σ$ and $b_t$ extracted from one- and two-point functions agree quantitatively with Monte Carlo benchmarks where available. For both $N=2$ and $N=3$, we find a positive extraordinary-log exponent $α$, providing independent microscopic evidence for extraordinary-log boundary criticality. Our results extend fuzzy-sphere BCFT spectroscopy beyond the Ising universality class to continuous $O(N)$ symmetry.

Boundary criticality of the O(N) model in d = 3 critically revisited

Max A. Metlitski

It is known that the classical O(N) O ( N ) model in dimension d > 3 d > 3 at its bulk critical point admits three boundary universality classes: the ordinary, the extra-ordinary and the special. For the ordinary transition the bulk and the boundary order simultaneously; the extra-ordinary fixed point corresponds to the bulk transition occurring in the presence of an ordered boundary, while the special fixed point corresponds to a boundary phase transition between the ordinary and the extra-ordinary classes. While the ordinary fixed point survives in d = 3 d = 3 , it is less clear what happens to the extra-ordinary and special fixed points when d = 3 d = 3 and N \ge 2 N ≥ 2 . Here we show that formally treating N N as a continuous parameter, there exists a critical value N_c > 2 N c > 2 separating two distinct regimes. For 2 \leq N < N_c 2 ≤ N < N c the extra-ordinary fixed point survives in d = 3 d = 3 , albeit in a modified form: the long-range boundary order is lost, instead, the order parameter correlation function decays as a power of \log r log r . For N > N_c N > N c there is no fixed point with order parameter correlations decaying slower than power law. We discuss several scenarios for the evolution of the phase diagram past N = N_c N = N c . Our findings appear to be consistent with recent Monte Carlo studies of classical models with N = 2 N = 2 and N = 3 N =

The bootstrap of points and lines

Marco Meineri, Bharathkumar Radhakrishnan

A bstract We study two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with boundaries via the conformal bootstrap. We derive a positive semi-definite program from crossing symmetry of three observables: the annulus partition function, the two-point function of identical operators in the presence of a boundary, and the four-point function of the same operators on the infinite plane. The mixed-correlator system allows the numerical bootstrap to access new data, like the bulk-to-boundary Operator Product Expansion coefficients, and to strengthen the bounds on observables already contained in the partition function on the annulus, such as the boundary entropy. We test the method on the free boson CFT; then, as a first application, we produce new non-perturbative bounds on the entropy and the gaps in boundary CFTs with central charge c = 3/2, with special emphasis on the 𝔰𝔲(2) 2 WZW model.

Special transition and extraordinary phase on the surface of a two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Chengxiang Ding, Wenjing Zhu, Wenan Guo +1 more

Continuous phase transitions exhibit richer critical phenomena on the surface than in the bulk, because distinct surface universality classes can be realized at the same bulk critical point by tuning the surface interactions. The exploration of surface critical behavior provides a window looking into higher-dimensional boundary conformal field theories. In this work, we study the surface critical behavior of a two-dimensional (2D) quantum critical Heisenberg model by tuning the surface coupling strength, and discover a direct special transition on the surface from the ordinary phase into an extraordinary phase. The extraordinary phase has a long-range antiferromagnetic order on the surface, in sharp contrast to the logarithmic decaying spin correlations in the 3D classical O(3) model. The special transition point has a new set of critical exponents, y_{s}=0.86(4) y s = 0.86 ( 4 ) and \eta_{\parallel}=-0.33(1) η ∥ = − 0.33 ( 1 ) , which are distinct from the special transition of the classical O(3) model and indicate a new surface universality class of the 3D O(3) Wilson-Fisher theory.
