Abstract

Abstract We study the non-equilibrium phase diagram of a fully-connected Ising p-spin model, for generic p > 2, and investigate its robustness with respect to the inclusion of spin-wave fluctuations, resulting from a ferromagnetic, short-range spin interaction. In particular, we investigate the dynamics of the mean-field model after a quantum quench: we observe a new dynamical phase transition which is either first or second order depending on the even or odd parity of p, in stark contrast with its thermal counterpart which is first order for all p. The dynamical phase diagram is qualitatively modified by the fluctuations introduced by a short-range interaction which drive the system always towards various prethermal paramagnetic phases determined by the strength of time dependent fluctuations of the magnetization.

Chaotic Dynamical Ferromagnetic Phase Induced by Nonequilibrium Quantum Fluctuations

Alessio Lerose, Jamir Marino, Bojan Žunkovič +2 more

We investigate the robustness of a dynamical phase transition against quantum fluctuations by studying the impact of a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor spin interaction in one spatial dimension on the nonequilibrium dynamical phase diagram of the fully connected quantum Ising model. In particular, we focus on the transient dynamics after a quantum quench and study the prethermal state via a combination of analytic time-dependent spin wave theory and numerical methods based on matrix product states. We find that, upon increasing the strength of the quantum fluctuations, the dynamical critical point fans out into a chaotic dynamical phase within which the asymptotic ordering is characterized by strong sensitivity to the parameters and initial conditions. We argue that such a phenomenon is general, as it arises from the impact of quantum fluctuations on the mean-field out of equilibrium dynamics of any system which exhibits a broken discrete symmetry.

Impact of non-equilibrium fluctuations on pre-thermal dynamical phase transitions in interacting spin chains

Alessio Lerose, Bojan Žunkovič, Jamir Marino +2 more

We study the non-equilibrium phase diagram and the dynamical phase transitions occurring during the pre-thermalization of non-integrable quantum spin chains, subject to either quantum quenches or linear ramps of a relevant control parameter. We consider spin systems in which long-range ferromagnetic interactions compete with short-range, integrability-breaking terms. We capture the pre-thermal stages of the non-equilibrium evolution via a time-dependent spin wave expansion at leading order in the spin waves density. In order to access regimes with strong integrability breaking, instead, we perform numerical simulations based on the time-dependent variational principle with matrix product states. By investigating a large class of quantum spin models, we demonstrate that non-equilibrium fluctuations can significantly affect the dynamics near critical points of the phase diagram, resulting in a chaotic evolution of the collective order parameter, akin to the dynamics of a classical particle in a multiple-well potential subject to quantum friction. We also elucidate the signature of this novel dynamical phase on the time-dependent correlation functions of the local order parameter. We finally establish a connection with the notion of dynamical quantum phase transition associated with a possible non-analytic behavior of the return probability amplitude, or Loschmidt echo, showing that the latter displays cusps whenever the order parameter vanishes during its real-time evolution.

Phase Diagrams of One-Dimensional Ising and XY Models with Fully Connected Ferromagnetic and Anti-Ferromagnetic Quantum Fluctuations

Shuntaro Okada, Masayuki Ohzeki, Kazuyuki Tanaka

We analytically investigated the phase diagrams of one-dimensional Ising and XY models. A second-order phase transition occurs in both models only with the transverse magnetic field. In this study, the fully connected ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic XX interactions are applied in addition to the transverse magnetic field. The ferromagnetic XX interaction causes a first-order phase transition in both of the one-dimensional Ising and XY models. In contrast, by applying the anti-ferromagnetic one, the second-order phase transition can be avoided in the one-dimensional Ising model, and the critical amplitude becomes smaller in the one-dimensional XY model even though the second-order phase transition remains and the critical exponent does not change. Because the anti-ferromagnetic XX interaction works to destroy the order of the transverse magnetization, it begins to decrease at a larger strength of the transverse magnetic field. As a result, the susceptibility of the transverse magnetization with respect to the strength of the magnetic field becomes small. It is conjectured that the anti-ferromagnetic XX interaction is generally preferable to the ferromagnetic interaction to improve the performance of quantum annealing.

Concurrence of dynamical phase transitions at finite temperature in the fully connected transverse-field Ising model

Johannes Lang, Bernhard Frank, Jad C. Halimeh

We construct the finite-temperature dynamical phase diagram of the fully connected transverse-field Ising model from the vantage point of two disparate concepts of dynamical criticality. An analytical derivation of the classical dynamics and exact diagonalization simulations are used to study the dynamics after a quantum quench in the system prepared in a thermal equilibrium state. The different dynamical phases characterized by the type of nonanalyticities that emerge in an appropriately defined Loschmidt-echo return rate directly correspond to the dynamical phases determined by the spontaneous breaking of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry in the long-time steady state. The dynamical phase diagram is qualitatively different depending on whether the initial thermal state is ferromagnetic or paramagnetic. Whereas the former leads to a dynamical phase diagram that can be directly related to its equilibrium counterpart, the latter gives rise to a divergent dynamical critical temperature at vanishing final transverse-field strength.

Quantum fluctuations effects in a cluster spin glass model

N. Kellermann

In this work we study the effects of quantum fluctuations in a disordered magnetic system. We consider a cluster-spin Ising model with antiferromagnetic short range interactions (J0) and disordered long range interactions (J) between clusters, where the system is under the influence of a transverse magnetic field Γ. The analytic treatment of the model is done by the replica method and Trotter formalism, in which a cluster mean field, replica symmetric and static approximations are used. This allows us to obtain an effective model of a single cluster that is exactly diagonalized. Thermodynamic quantities like order parameter and free energy are obtained then, the phase diagrams are analyzed. They are shown in temperature versus J0=J phase diagrams for some intensities of Γ. With Γ = 0, when we decrease the temperature (for lower intensities of J0=J) a continuous phase transition between the paramagnetic and cluster spin glass state (CSG) is found. When we increase the ratio J0=J, the system presents the antiferromagnetic phase (AF). The CSG state and the AF phase are separated by first order transitions. In the intermediate region of disorder, there exist a small interval in the AF-PM transition that is first order. When Γ is increased, the transitions PM-AF and PM-VSC decrease toward critical points in the lower and higher disorder, respectively. It is worth to note, in the intermediate range of disorder, that the transition CSG-AF disappears, letting a PM phase between them, even for zero temperature. Besides that, the first-order region, in the PM-AF transition, turns into a second order phase transition, changing its criticality in the low temperature regime. Our results show that quantum fluctuations affects the phase transitions of the model being capable to suppress and/or change his criticality. The present work suggests a model and a mechanism of the change in the criticality away from the quantum critical point, helping the investigation of this interesting and recent topic.
