Abstract Recent work has shown how to understand the Page curve of an evaporating black hole from replica wormholes. However, more detailed information about the structure of its quantum state is needed to fully understand the dynamics of black hole evaporation. Here we study entanglement negativity, an important measure of quantum entanglement in mixed states, in a couple of toy models of evaporating black holes. We find four phases dominated by different types of geometries: the disconnected, cyclically connected, anti-cyclically connected, and pairwise connected geometries. The last of these geometries are new replica wormholes that break the replica symmetry spontaneously. We also analyze the transitions between these four phases by summing more generic replica geometries using a Schwinger-Dyson equation. In particular, we find enhanced corrections to various negativity measures near the transition between the cyclic and pairwise phase.
A bstract Recent work has shown how to obtain the Page curve of an evaporating black hole from holographic computations of entanglement entropy. We show how these computations can be justified using the replica trick, from geometries with a spacetime wormhole connecting the different replicas. In a simple model, we study the Page transition in detail by summing replica geometries with different topologies. We compute related quantities in less detail in more complicated models, including JT gravity coupled to conformal matter and the SYK model. Separately, we give a direct gravitational argument for entanglement wedge reconstruction using an explicit formula known as the Petz map; again, a spacetime wormhole plays an important role. We discuss an interpretation of the wormhole geometries as part of some ensemble average implicit in the gravity description.
We obtain the holographic entanglement negativity for bipartite mixed states at a finite temperature in baths described by conformal field theories dual to configurations involving two communicating black holes in a braneworld geometry. In this context, we analyze the mixed state entanglement structure characterized by the information transfer between the black holes. The model corresponds to a configuration of two dimensional eternal Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) black holes in a braneworld geometry involving two Planck branes coupled through shared bath systems described by
CFT2s. Our results reproduce analogue of the Page curves for the entanglement negativity obtained earlier in the context of random matrix theory and from geometric evaporation in JT black hole configurations.
We consider the capacity of entanglement in models related with the gravitational phase transitions. The capacity is labeled by the replica parameter which plays a similar role to the inverse temperature in thermodynamics. In the end of the world brane model of a radiating black hole the capacity has a peak around the Page time indicating the phase transition between replica wormhole geometries of different types of topology. Similarly, in a moving mirror model describing Hawking radiation the capacity typically shows a discontinuity when the dominant saddle switches between two phases, which can be seen as a formation of island regions. In either case we find the capacity can be an invaluable diagnostic for a black hole evaporation process.
We argue that the `island conjecture' and the replica wormhole derivation of the Page curve break monogamy of entanglement through allowing black hole interior states to be non-classically correlated while also pairwise entangled with radiation states. The reason is that quantum degrees of freedom (present in any half of a Hawking pair) cannot all be identified with the environment at semi-classical pair production, and can only be fixed relative to a subsystem, as required for the Page curve, by correlations equivalent to entanglement - regardless of what those correlations are attributed to. This implies that the recent gravity (replica wormhole) and holographic (island conjecture) derivations of the Page curve entail new physics not yet properly taken into account.
Abstract We investigate the time evolution of reflected entropy and entanglement negativity for mixed state configurations involving two adjacent and disjoint intervals in the radiation flux of moving mirrors by utilizing the AdS/BCFT duality. These measures are computed for the required mixed state configurations by using the respective replica techniques in the large central charge limit of the BCFT1+1. We demonstrate that the results obtained exactly agree with the corresponding holographic computations in the dual bulk AdS3 geometry with an end of the world brane. In this context, the analogues of the Page curves for these measures are obtained for the required configurations in the radiation flux of kink and escaping mirrors which mimic the Hawking radiation from evaporating and eternal black holes respectively.
A bstract The entanglement negativity
E E ( A : B ) is a useful measure of quantum entanglement in bipartite mixed states. In random tensor networks (RTNs), which are related to fixed-area states, it was found in ref. [1] that the dominant saddles computing the even Rényi negativity
E(2k) E 2 k generically break the ℤ 2 k replica symmetry. This calls into question previous calculations of holographic negativity using 2D CFT techniques that assumed ℤ 2 k replica symmetry and proposed that the negativity was related to the entanglement wedge cross section. In this paper, we resolve this issue by showing that in general holographic states, the saddles computing
E(2k) E 2 k indeed break the ℤ 2 k replica symmetry. Our argument involves an identity relating
E(2k) E 2 k to the k -th Rényi entropy on subregion AB ∗ in the doubled state
∣ρAB⟩AA∗BB∗ ρ AB A A ∗ BB ∗ , from which we see that the ℤ 2 k replica symmetry is broken down to ℤ k . For k < 1, which includes the case of
E E ( A : B ) at k = 1/2, we use a modified cosmic brane proposal to derive a new holographic prescription for
E(2k) E 2 k and show that it is given by a new saddle with multiple cosmic branes anchored to subregions A and B in the original state. Using our prescription, we reproduce known results for the PSSY model and show that our saddle dominates over previously proposed CFT calculations near k = 1. Moreover, we argue that the ℤ 2 k symmetric configurations previously proposed are not gravitational saddles, unlike our proposal. Finally, we contrast holographic calculations with those arising from RTNs with non-maximally entangled links, demonstrating that the qualitative form of backreaction in such RTNs is different from that in gravity.
