Non-Markovian master equation for linear and nonlinear systems

Gautam Gangopadhyay, Deb Shankar Ray

Based on the standard system-heat-bath model, we have formulated a theory of the non-Markovian master equation for linear and nonlinear systems for a correlation time that is short but finite. We have applied the theory to linear systems, such as harmonic oscillators and two-level atoms and calculated the band-shape functions for transient optical absorption in the pump-probe experiments. The significant interplay of nonlinearity and non-Markovian decay has been illustrated by another application of the theory to a Morse oscillator. The theory is valid for arbitrary nonlinearity and finite temperatures but within the weak-coupling limit and has been derived without ad hoc implementation of a phenomenological memory function.

Non-Markovian dynamics in pulsed- and continuous-wave atom lasers

Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Daniel Faller, Bernd Kappler +1 more

The dynamics of atom lasers with a continuous output coupler based on two-photon Raman transitions is investigated. With the help of the time-convolutionless projection operator technique the quantum master equations for pulsed- and continuous-wave (cw) atom lasers are derived. In the case of the pulsed atom laser the power of the time-convolutionless projection operator technique is demonstrated through comparison with the exact solution. It is shown that in an intermediate coupling regime where the Born-Markov approximation fails, the results of this algorithm agree with the exact solution. To study the dynamics of a continuous-wave atom laser a pump mechanism is included in the model. Whereas the pump mechanism is treated within the Born-Markov approximation, the output coupling leads to non-Markovian effects. The solution of the master equation resulting from the time-convolutionless projection operator technique exhibits strong oscillations in the occupation number of the Bose-Einstein condensate. These oscillations are traced back to a quantum interference which is due to the non-Markovian dynamics and which decays slowly in time as a result of the dispersion relation for massive particles.

Strongly interacting photons in arrays of dissipative nonlinear cavities under a frequency-dependent incoherent pumping

José Lebreuilly, Iacopo Carusotto, Michiel Wouters

We report a theoretical study of a quantum optical model consisting of an array of strongly nonlinear cavities incoherently pumped by an ensemble of population-inverted two-level atoms. Projective methods are used to eliminate the atomic dynamics and write a generalized master equation for the photonic degrees of freedom only, where the frequency-dependence of gain introduces non-Markovian features. In the simplest single cavity configuration, this pumping scheme allows for the selective generation of Fock states with a well-defined photon number. For many cavities in a weakly non-Markovian limit, the non-equilibrium steady state recovers a Grand-Canonical statistical ensemble at a temperature determined by the effective atomic linewidth. For a two-cavity system in the strongly nonlinear regime, signatures of a Mott state with one photon per cavity are found.
