Abstract

Abstract We investigate the doping-driven metal–insulator transition of the (2+1)-dimensional Hubbard model in the path-integral formalism with the tensor renormalization group method. We calculate the electron density 〈n〉 as a function of the chemical potential μ, choosing three values of the Coulomb potential with U = 80, 8, and 2 as representative cases of the strong, intermediate, and weak couplings. We determine the critical chemical potential at each U, where the Hubbard model undergoes the metal–insulator transition from the half-filling plateau with 〈n〉 = 1 to the metallic state with 〈n〉 > 1. Our results indicate that the model exhibits the metal–insulator transition over a vast region of the finite coupling U.

Tensor renormalization group approach to ( 1+1 )-dimensional Hubbard model

Shinichiro Akiyama, Y. Kuramashi

We investigate the metal-insulator transition of the ($1+1$)-dimensional Hubbard model in the path-integral formalism with the tensor renormalization group method. The critical chemical potential ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\mathrm{c}}$ and the critical exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$ are determined from the $\ensuremath{\mu}$ dependence of the electron density in the thermodynamic limit. Our results for ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\mathrm{c}}$ and $\ensuremath{\nu}$ show consistency with an exact solution based on the Bethe ansatz. Our encouraging results indicate the applicability of the tensor renormalization group method to the analysis of higher-dimensional Hubbard models.

Doping-induced metal-insulator transition in two-dimensional Hubbard t−U and extended Hubbard t−U−W models

Fakher F. Assaad, Masatoshi Imada

We show numerically that the nature of the doping-induced metal-insulator transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with hopping matrix element $t$ and Coulomb repulsion $U$ is radically altered by the inclusion of a term $W$ that depends upon a square of a single-particle nearest-neighbor hopping. This result is reached by computing the localization length ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{l}$ in the insulating state. At $W/t=0.05$ and $U/t=4$, we find results consistent with ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{l}\ensuremath{\sim}|\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{c}{|}^{\ensuremath{-}1/2}$ where ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{c}$ is the critical chemical potential. In contrast, ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{l}\ensuremath{\sim}|\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{c}{|}^{\ensuremath{-}1/4}$ for the Hubbard model at $U/t=4$. At half-filling, we calculate the density of states $N(\ensuremath{\omega})$. The large value of $N(\ensuremath{\omega})$ in the vicinity of $\ensuremath{\omega}={\ensuremath{\mu}}_{c}$ present at $W=0$ is suppressed with growing values of $W$. At finite doping, the $d$-wave pair-field correlations are enhanced with growing values of $W$. The numerical results imply that at finite values of $W$ doping the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator leads to a ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ superconductor.

Mott transition in quasi-one-dimensional systems

S. Moukouri, Eitan Eidelstein

We report the application of the density-matrix renormalization-group method to a spatially anisotropic two-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling. We find a deconfinement transition induced by the transverse hopping parameter ${t}_{y}$ from an insulator to a metal. Therefore, if ${t}_{y}$ is fixed in the metallic phase, increasing the interaction $U$ leads to a metal-to-insulator transition at a finite critical $U$. This is in contrast to the weak-coupling Hartree-Fock theory which predicts a nesting-induced antiferromagnetic insulator for any $U>0$.

Mott transition in the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice

Takuya Yoshioka, Akihisa Koga, Norio Kawakami

Abstract We investigate a metal–insulator Mott transition in the half‐filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice. In this study, we make use of the path‐integral renormalization group method with an iteration and truncation scheme proposed recently, which allows us to access the competing ground states around the transition point. We find for a cluster with 36 sites that as the Hubbard interaction U increases, the paramagnetic metallic (PM) state undergoes a metal–insulator phase transition to a nonmagnetic insulating (NMI) state at $U_{\rm c} \sim 7.4t$ , where t is the transfer integral. A detailed analysis around the transition point shows that the Mott transition is of first order.

Ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled bilayer Hubbard model

Michael Golor, Timo Reckling, Laura Classen +2 more

Employing a combination of functional renormalization group calculations and projective determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the Hubbard model on the square lattice bilayer at half filling. From this combined analysis, we obtain a comprehensive account of the ground-state phase diagram with respect to the extent of the system's metallic and (antiferromagnetically ordered) Mott-insulating as well as band-insulating regions. By means of an unbiased functional renormalization group approach, we exhibit the antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state as the relevant instability of the free metallic state, induced by any weak finite on-site repulsion. Upon performing a careful analysis of the quantum Monte Carlo data, we resolve the difficulty of identifying this antiferromagnetic ground state for finite interlayer hopping in the weak-coupling regime, where nonmonotonic finite-size corrections are shown to relate to the two-sheeted Fermi surface structure of the metallic phase. On the other hand, quantum Monte Carlo simulations are well suited to identify the transition between the Mott-insulating phase and the band insulator in the intermediate-to-strong coupling regime. Here, we compare our numerical findings to indications for the transition region obtained from the functional renormalization group procedure.

Phase Diagram of the Two-Dimensional Anderson-Hubbard Model

Jaichul Yi Lizeng Zhang, Geoffrey Canright

We study the ground state of the two-dimensional Anderson-Hubbard model using a quantum real space renormalization group method. We obtain the phase diagram near half filling. The system is always insulating with disorder. At half filling, the system undergoes a transition from a gapless (Anderson) insulator to an incompressible (Mott-Hubbard) insulator as the interaction $U$ reaches a critical value $U_c$. Away from half filling, the insulating phase is always gapless and is found to be controlled by the Anderson fixed point at half filling. This result is similar to that obtained in the corresponding one dimensional system and suggests strongly the importance of the electron-electron correlation in this gapless insulating phase.
