Abstract

In this work, we investigate the impact of two cooperative unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based jammers on the secrecy performance of a ground wireless network in the presence of an eavesdropper. For that purpose, we investigate the secrecy-area related metrics, Jamming Coverage and Jamming Efficiency. Moreover, we propose a hybrid metric, the so-called Weighted Secrecy Coverage (WSC) and a virtual distributed multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-based zero-forcing precoding scheme to avoid the jamming effects on the legitimate receiver. For evaluating these metrics, we derive a closed-form position-based metric, the secrecy improvement. Our mathematical derivations and comparative simulations show that the proposed zero-forcing scheme leads to an improvement on the secrecy performance in terms of the WSC, and provides conditions for improvement of Jamming Efficiency. They also show positioning trends on the UAVs over a fixed orbit around the legitimate transmitter as well as power allocation trends for optimal secrecy.

Weighted Secrecy Coverage Analysis and the Impact of Friendly Jamming over UAV-Enabled Networks

Xavier Alejandro Flores Cabezas, Diana Pamela Moya Osorio, Matti Latva‐aho

In 5G and beyond networks, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are an attractive solution to enhance the secrecy of a wireless systems by exploiting their predominant LOS links and spacial manoeuvrability to introduce a friendly jamming. In this work, we investigate the impact of two cooperative UAV-based jammers on the secrecy performance of a ground wireless wiretap channel by considering secrecy-area related metrics, the jamming coverage and jamming efficiency. Moreover, we propose a hybrid metric, the so-called Weighted Secrecy Coverage (WSC) that can be used as a metric for gaining insights on the optimal deployments of the UAV jammers to provide the best exploration of jamming signals. For evaluating these metrics, we derive a closed-form position-based metric, the secrecy improvement, and propose an analogous computationally simpler metric. Our simulations show that a balanced power allocation between the two UAVs leads to the best performances, as well as a symmetrical positioning behind the line of sight between the legitimate transmitter and receiver. Moreover, there exist an optimal UAV height for the jammers. Finally, we propose a suboptimal and simpler problem for the maximisation of the WSC.

UAV-Enabled Cooperative Jamming for Improving Secrecy of Ground Wiretap Channel

An Li, Qingqing Wu, Rui Zhang

This letter proposes a novel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled mobile jamming scheme to improve the secrecy rate of ground wiretap channel. Specifically, a UAV is employed to transmit jamming signals to combat against eavesdropping. Such a mobile jamming scheme is particularly appealing since the UAV-enabled jammer can fly close to the eavesdropper and opportunistically jam it by leveraging the UAV's mobility. We aim to maximize the average secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the UAV's trajectory and jamming power over a given flight period. To make the problem more tractable, we drive a closed-form lower bound for the achievable secrecy rate, based on which the UAV's trajectory and transmit power are optimized alternately by an efficient iterative algorithm applying the block coordinate descent and successive convex optimization techniques. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint design can significantly enhance the secrecy rate of the considered wiretap system as compared to benchmark schemes.

Secure Transmission with a Cooperative UAV-enabled Jammer

Yang Chen, Zhongpei Zhang, Binrui Li

In this paper, we investigate the secrecy performance of cooperative wireless communication networks, where a source (Alice) intends to transmit information to a legitimate user (Bob) with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled friendly jammer in the presence of a passive eavesdropper (Eve). In order to maximize the secrecy rate of the system under a certain secrecy outage probability, we design a scheme utilizing artificial-noise (AN) beamforming and cooperative jamming to determine the optimal power allocation factor with only location and statistical channel state information of the Eve. Numerical results validate that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the secrecy rate and secure energy efficiency (EE) performance.

UAV-Aided Jamming for Secure Ground Communication With Unknown Eavesdropper Location

Christantus O. Nnamani, Muhammad R. A. Khandaker, Mathini Sellathurai

This paper investigates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided jamming technique for enabling physical layer keyless security in scenarios where the exact eavesdropper location is unknown. We assume that the unknown eavesdropper location is within an ellipse characterizing the coverage region of the transmitter. By sequentially optimizing the transmit power, the flight path of the UAV and its jamming power, we aim at maximizing the average secrecy rate with arbitrary eavesdropper location. Simulation results demonstrate that the optimal flight path obtains better secrecy rate performance compared to that using direct UAV flight path encasing the transmitter and the legitimate receiver. Most importantly, even with the unknown eavesdropper location, we obtained a secrecy rate that is comparable to a scenario when the eavesdropper's location is known. However, the average secrecy rate with the unknown eavesdropper location varies depending on the proximity of the eavesdropper to the known location of the transmitter. We also observe that due to the UAV-aided jamming, the average secrecy rate stabilizes at some point even though the average received envelope power of the eavesdropper increases. This essentially demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Cooperative Jamming for Secure UAV Communications With Partial Eavesdropper Information

Yupeng Li, Rongqing Zhang, Jianhua Zhang +2 more

The broadcast nature of air-to-ground line-of-sight (LoS) wireless channel imposes a great challenge in secure unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. To address this issue, this paper investigates UAV-ground communications from the physical-layer security perspective. Specifically, the investigated scenario includes a UAV serving as the base station (BS) that transmits confidential signals to a legitimate ground user, and there are multiple eavesdroppers on the ground with unknown position information. To further enhance the secrecy performance of the UAV-ground communications, an idle UAV can be employed to serve as a friendly jammer, which can transmit jamming signals to confuse the eavesdroppers. In our proposed strategy, the flying trajectory and the transmit power for both the UAVs are jointly optimized by maximizing the worst-case secrecy rate (WCSR) of the system. Considering the intractability of the formulated non-convex problem, we further provide a block coordinate descent-based iterative optimization method. Simulations verify that our proposed algorithm can significantly improve the average WCSR in comparison with the existing works.

On the Performance of Low-Altitude UAV-Enabled Secure AF Relaying With Cooperative Jamming and SWIPT

Milad Tatar Mamaghani, Yi Hong

This paper proposes a novel cooperative secure unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided transmission protocol, where a source sends confidential information to a destination via an energy-constrained UAV-mounted amplify-and-forward relay in the presence of a ground eavesdropper. We adopt destination-assisted cooperative jamming as well as simultaneous wireless information and power transfer at the UAV-mounted relay to enhance physical-layer security and transmission reliability. Assuming a low-altitude UAV, we derive connection probability, secrecy outage probability, instantaneous secrecy rate, and average secrecy rate of the proposed protocol over Air-Ground channels, which are modeled as Rician fading with elevation-angel dependent parameters. Further, we analyze the asymptotic average secrecy rate performance of the proposed UAV-relaying scheme and derive high signal-to-noise ratio measures of the average secrecy rate to highlight the effect of various channel features on the system performance. By simulations, we verify our novel theoretical exact and approximate results and demonstrate significant performance improvement of our protocol, when compared to conventional transmission protocol with ground relaying and UAV-based transmission protocol without exploiting destination jamming. Finally, we evaluate the impacts of various system parameters, specifically, find the optimal UAV placement on the proposed protocol in terms of the aforementioned secrecy metrics.
