Abstract

A continuous-time quantum random walk describes the motion of a quantum mechanical particle on an underlying graph. The graph itself is associated with a Hilbert space of dimension equal to the number of vertices. The dynamics of the walk is governed by the unitary operator $\mathcal{U}(t) = e^{iAt}$, where $A$ is the adjacency matrix of the graph. An important notion in the quantum random walk is the transfer of a quantum state from one vertex to another. If the fidelity of the transfer is unity, we call it a perfect state transfer. Many graph families have been shown to admit PST or periodicity, including cubelike graphs. These graphs are unweighted. In this paper, we generalize the PST or periodicity of cubelike graphs to that of weighted cubelike graphs. We characterize the weights for which they admit PST or show periodicity, both at time $t=\fracπ{2}$.

State Transfer in Complex Quantum Walks

Antonio Acuaviva, Ada Chan, Eldridge, Summer +5 more

Given a graph with Hermitian adjacency matrix $H$, perfect state transfer occurs from vertex $a$ to vertex $b$ if the $(b,a)$-entry of the unitary matrix $\exp(-iHt)$ has unit magnitude for some time $t$. This phenomenon is relevant for information transmission in quantum spin networks and is known to be monogamous under real symmetric matrices. We prove the following results: 1. For oriented graphs (whose nonzero weights are $\pm i$), the oriented $3$-cycle and the oriented edge are the only graphs where perfect state transfer occurs between every pair of vertices. This settles a conjecture of Cameron et al. On the other hand, we construct an infinite family of oriented graphs with perfect state transfer between any pair of vertices on a subset of size four. 2. There are infinite families of Hermitian graphs with one-way perfect state transfer, where perfect state transfer occurs without periodicity. In contrast, perfect state transfer implies periodicity whenever the adjacency matrix has algebraic entries (as shown by Godsil). 3. There are infinite families with non-monogamous pretty good state transfer in rooted graph products. In particular, we generalize known results on double stars (due to Fan and Godsil) and on paths with loops (due to Kempton, Lippner and Yau). The latter extends the experimental observation of quantum transport (made by Zimborás et al.) and shows non-monogamous pretty good state transfer can occur amongst distant vertices.

Perfect State Transfer on Quotient Graphs in Shunt Decomposition-Based Quantum Walks

Banita Katuwal, Srinath M S, Y Lakshmi Naidu +1 more

This paper investigates perfect state transfer (PST) in discrete-time quantum walks constructed via the shunt decomposition method. The walks are defined on a graph $G$ and its associated quotient graph $G/π$, induced by an equitable partition $π$. Through the shunt decomposition of $G$, we derive an explicit relation between the shift operator of the parent graph $G$ and that of its quotient graph $G/π$. We construct a reflection operator based on the characteristic matrix, which establishes a connection between the transition operator of the parent graph and that of its lower-dimensional quotient graph. We then prove that PST occurs on $G$ if and only if it occurs on $G/π$. Furthermore, we express the unitary evolution operator of the quotient graph in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind, from which we derive explicit criteria for PST. As an application, we establish PST on the cycle graph $C_{n}$ at time $k = n/2$, and lift the result to the parent graph $C_{2n}$ via the equitable partition $π$. We further show that if an equitable partition $π$ of $G$ induces a quotient isomorphic to $K_n^{\circlearrowleft}$, the complete digraph on $n$ vertices with a loop at every vertex, then PST occurs at step $k = n$, and the walk is periodic at $k = 2n$. This framework is applied to two families of graphs, which are the complete bipartite digraph $K_{n,n}^{\rightleftharpoons}$ and the circulant graph $\operatorname{Circ}(2n, S)$, where $S$ consists of all odd residues modulo $2n$ and $n = 2^s$ for some $s \geq 1$, establishing PST in their respective line digraphs. Collectively, these results also answer the question posed by Godsil and Zhan concerning which shunt decompositions or embeddings of a graph admit PST.

Quantum State Transfer in Graphs

Let X be a graph, A its adjacency matrix, and t a non-negative real number. The matrix exp(i t A) determines the evolution in time of a certain quantum system defined on the graph. It represents a continuous-time quantum walk in X. We say that X admits perfect state transfer from a vertex u to a vertex v if there is a time t such that \n| exp(i t A)_(u,v) | = 1. \n \nThe main problem we study in this thesis is that of determining which simple graphs admit perfect state transfer. For some classes of graphs the problem is solved. For example, a path on n vertices admits perfect state transfer if and only if n=2 or n=3. However, the general problem of determining all graphs that admit perfect state transfer is substantially hard. \n \nIn this thesis, we focus on some special cases. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a distance-regular graph to admit perfect state transfer. In particular, we provide a detailed account of which distance-regular graphs of diameter three do so. \n \nA graph is said to be spectrally extremal if the number of distinct eigenvalues is equal to the diameter plus one. Distance-regular graphs are examples of such graphs. We study perfect state transfer in spectrally extremal graphs and explore rich connections to the topic of orthogonal polynomials. We characterize perfect state transfer in such graphs. \n \nWe also provide a general framework in which perfect state transfer in graph products can be studied. We use this to determine when direct products and double covers of graphs admit perfect state transfer. As a consequence, we provide many new examples of simple graphs admitting perfect state transfer. We also provide some advances in the understanding of perfect state transfer in Cayley graphs for the groups (Z_2)^d and Z_n. \n \nFinally, we consider the problem of determining which trees admit perfect state transfer. We show more generally that, except for the path on two vertices, if a connected bipartite graph contains a unique perfect matching, then it cannot admit perfect state transfer. We also consider this problem in the context of another model of quantum walks determined by the matrix exp(i t L), where L is the Laplacian matrix of the graph. In particular, we show that no tree on an odd number of vertices admits perfect state transfer according to this model.

Edge State Transfer

Let G be a graph and let t be a positive real number. Then the evolution of the continuous quantum walk defined on G is described by the transition matrix U(t)=exp(itH).The matrix H is called Hamiltonian. So far the most studied quantum walks are the ones whose Hamiltonians are the adjacency matrices of the underlying graphs and initial states are vertex states e_a, with e_a being the characteristic vector of vertex a. \n \nThis thesis focuses on Laplacian edge state transfer, that is, the quantum walks whose initial states are edge states e_a-e_b and Hamiltonians are the Laplacians of the underlying graphs. So far the research about perfect state transfer only involves vertex states and Laplacian edge state transfer has not been studied before. We extend the known results of perfect vertex state transfer and periodicity of vertex states to Laplacian edge state transfer. \n \nWe prove two useful closure properties for perfect Laplacian edge state transfer. One is that complementation preserves perfect edge state transfer. The other is that if G has perfect Laplacian edge state transfer at time τ and H has perfect Laplacian vertex state transfer also at time τ, then with some mild assumption on the pairs of vertex states and edge states that have perfect state transfer, the Cartesian product G □ H also admits perfect edge state transfer. Those two properties provide us new ways to construct graphs with perfect Laplacian edge state transfer. We also observe one phenomenon that happens in Laplacian edge state transfer which never happens in vertex state transfer: if there is perfect state transfer from e_a-e_b to e_α-e_β and also from e_b-e_c to e_β-e_γ at the same time t in G, then G admits perfect state transfer from e_a-e_c to e_α-e_γ at time t. \n \nWe give characterizations of perfect Laplacian edge state transfer in cycles, paths and complete bipartite graphs K_{2,4n}. We study perfect state transfer and periodicity on edge states with special spectral features. We also consider the case when the unsigned Laplacian is Hamiltonian and initial states are plus states of the form e_a+e_b. In this case, we characterize perfect state transfer in paths, cycles and bipartite graphs. \nWe close this thesis by a list of open questions.

Periodicity and perfect state transfer in quantum walks on three families of graphs

Katie Barr, Tim Proctor, Daniel Allen +1 more

We present three families of graphs which admit quantum walks with interesting dynamics either in the continuous time walk, or in the discrete time walk for appropriate selections of coin and initial conditions. These dynamics are either periodicity, perfect state transfer, or very high fidelity state transfer. These families are modifications of families known not to exhibit periodicity or perfect state transfer in general. The robustness of the dynamics is tested by varying the initial state and by adding decoherence. The perfect state transfer is found to be very robust to small disturbances. The families of graphs found to exhibit useful properties are generalisations of small graphs. By varying the strength of edges in each family, interpolation between the families can be carried out, enabling further understanding of the factors affecting perfect state transfer. The perfect state transfer in these families is found to be destroyed by this variation, indicating that the transport strongly depends on the graph structure. A brief summary of other small graphs investigated but found not to exhibit such properties is included for completeness.

Periodicity and perfect state transfer in quantum walks on variants of cycles

Katharine E. Barr, Tim Proctor, Daniel Allen +1 more

We systematically investigated perfect state transfer between antipodal nodes of discrete time quantum walks on variants of the cycles $C_4$, $C_6$ and $C_8$ for three choices of coin operator. Perfect state transfer was found, in general, to be very rare, only being preserved for a very small number of ways of modifying the cycles. We observed that some of our useful modifications of $C_4$ could be generalised to an arbitrary number of nodes, and present three families of graphs which admit quantum walks with interesting dynamics either in the continuous time walk, or in the discrete time walk for appropriate selections of coin and initial conditions. These dynamics are either periodicity, perfect state transfer, or very high fidelity state transfer. These families are modifications of families known not to exhibit periodicity or perfect state transfer in general. The robustness of the dynamics is tested by varying the initial state, interpolating between structures and by adding decoherence.
