Abstract

Abstract We study large deviations in interacting quantum liquids with the polytropic equation of state P ( ρ ) ∼ ρ γ , where ρ is density and P is pressure. By solving hydrodynamic equations in imaginary time we evaluate the instanton action and calculate the emptiness formation probability (EFP), the probability that no particle resides in a macroscopic interval of a given size. Analytic solutions are found for a certain infinite sequence of rational polytropic indexes γ and the result can be analytically continued to any value of γ ⩾ 1. Our findings agree with (and significantly expand on) previously known analytical and numerical results for EFP in quantum liquids. We also discuss interesting universal spacetime features of the instanton solution.

Emptiness formation probability in one-dimensional Bose liquids

Hsiu-Chung Yeh, Alex Kamenev

We study the emptiness formation probability (EFP) in interacting one-dimensional Bose liquids, which is the probability that a snapshot of its ground state reveals exactly zero particles within the interval $|x|<R$. For a weakly interacting liquid there is parametrically wide regime ${n}^{\ensuremath{-}1}<R<\ensuremath{\xi}$ (here $n$ is the average density and $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the healing length) where EFP exhibits a nontrivial crossover from the Poisson to the Gaussian behavior. We employ the instanton technique [NATO Science Series II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (2004), Vol. 221] to study quantitative details of these regime and compare it with previously reported special cases.

Hydrodynamics of correlated systems. Emptiness Formation Probability and Random Matrices

Alexander G. Abanov

A hydrodynamic approach is used to calculate an asymptotics of the Emptiness Formation Probability - the probability of a formation of an empty space in the ground state of a quantum one-dimensional many body system. Quantum hydrodynamics of a system is represented as a Euclidian path integral over configurations of hydrodynamic variables. In the limit of a large size of the empty space, the probability is dominated by an instanton configuration, and the problem is reduced to the finding of an instanton solution of classical hydrodynamic equations. After establishing a general formalism, we carry out this calculation for several simple systems -- free fermions with an arbitrary dispersion and Calogero-Sutherland model. For these systems we confirm the obtained results by comparison with exact results known in Random Matrix theory. We argue that the nonlinear hydrodynamic approach might be useful even in cases where the linearized hydrodynamics fails.

Emptiness Formation Probability for the One-Dimensional IsotropicXYModel

Masahiro Shiroishi, Minoru Takahashi, Yoshihiro Nishiyama

We study a correlation function for the one-dimensional isotropic ${XY}$ model (${XX0}$ model), which is called the Emptiness Formation Probability (EFP). It is the probability of the formation of a ferromagnetic string in the anti-ferromagnetic ground state. Using the expression of the EFP as a Toeplitz determinant, we discuss its asymptotic behaviors. We also compare the analytical results with numerical calculations as the density-matrix renormalization group and the quantum Monte-Carlo method.

EMPTINESS FORMATION PROBABILITY AND QUANTUM KNIZHNIK-ZAMOLODCHIKOV EQUATION

Herman E. Boos, V. E. Korepin, Fedor Aleksandrovich Smirnov

We consider the one-dimensional XXX spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet at zero temperature and zero magnetic field. We are interested in a probability of a formation of a ferromagnetic string P(n) in the antiferromagnetic ground-state. We call it emptiness formation probability [EFP]. We suggest a new technique for computation of the EFP in the inhomogeneous case. It is based on the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation [qKZ]. We calculate EFP for n≤6 for the inhomogeneous case. The homogeneous limit confirms our hypothesis about the relation of quantum correlations and number theory. We also make a conjecture about a structure of EFP for arbrary n.

On Hydrodynamic Correlations in Low-Dimensional Interacting Systems

Fabio Franchini

Low-dimensional systems are an important field of current theoretical and experimental research. Recent technological developments provide many possible realizations of effectively one-dimensional systems. These devices promise to give us access to a new range of phenomena. It is therefore very interesting to develop theoretical methods specific for such systems to model their behavior and calculate the correlators of the resulting theory. Incidentally, one such method exists and is known as Bosonization. It can be applied to one-dimensional systems and effectively describes low energy excitations in a universal way. We use the example of a correlator known as the Emptiness Formation Probability to show that Bosonization fails to describe some long range correlators corresponding to large disturbances (the EFP measures the probability for the ground state of the system to develop a region without particles). We trace this failure to the fact that Bosonization is constructed as a linear approximation of the full theory and we set up to develop a collective description with the required non-linearity. The resulting scheme is essentially a Hydrodynamic paradigm for quantum systems. We show how to construct such a hydrodynamic description for a variety of exactly integrable models and illustrate how it can be used to make new predictions. For the special case of the spin-1/2 XY model we take advantage of the structure of the model to express the EFP as a determinant of a very special type of matrix, known as Toeplitz Matrix. We use the theory of Toeplitz determinants to calculate the asymptotic behavior of the EFP in the XY model and discuss its relation with the criticality of the theory.

Emptiness formation probability, Toeplitz determinants, and conformal field theory

We revisit the study of the emptiness formation probability, the probability of forming a sequence of ` spins with the same ferromagnetic orientation in the ground-state of a quantum spin chain. We focus on two different examples, exhibiting strikingly different behavior: the XXZ and Ising chains. One has a conserved number of particles, the other does not. In the latter we show that the sequence of fixed spins can be viewed as an additional boundary in imaginary time. We then use conformal field theory (CFT) techniques to derive all universal terms in its scaling, and provide checks in free fermionic systems. These are based on numerical simulations or, when possible, mathematical results on the asymptotic behavior of Toeplitz and Toeplitz+Hankel determinants. A perturbed CFT analysis uncovers an interesting `−1 log ` correction, that also appears in the closely related spin full counting statistics. The XXZ case turns out to be more challenging. We use a simple qualitative picture in which the ferromagnetic sequence of spins freezes all degrees of freedom inside of a certain “arctic ” region, that we determine numerically. We also provide numerical evidence for the existence of universal logarithmic terms, generated by the massless field theory living outside of the arctic region. ar
