Abstract

We investigated the ionic Hubbard model with mass imbalance in one dimension, using the density matrix renormalization group method. This model exhibits a band insulator phase and an antiferromagnetic one, both with a finite spin gap. We found that this quantum phase transition is continuous, unalike the previous mean-field theory result. The von Neumann block entropy is maximum at the critical points, a fact that we used to build the phase diagram.

Effects of mass imbalance on metal-insulator transitions in the ionic Hubbard model

Thi-Hai-Yen Nguyen, Anh-Tuan Hoang, Duc Anh Le

We investigated the effects of mass imbalance on the metal-insulator phase diagram in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model using dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and the equations of motion (EOM) method to solve the impurity problem. Our results show that the band insulator region changes less significantly compared to the Mott insulator region, while the metallic region shrinks as the mass imbalance increases. Additionally, the staggered charge density was calculated and analyzed for various values of mass imbalance, providing further insight into the critical Coulomb interaction values that govern phase transitions.

Study of the ionic Peierls-Hubbard model using density matrix renormalization group methods

Yu‐Zhong Zhang, Chao Wu, Hua Lin

Density matrix renormalization group methods are used to investigate the quantum phase diagram of a one-dimensional half-filled ionic Peierls-Hubbard model at the antiadiabatic limit where quantum phonon fluctuations are taken into account partially. We found that two continuous phase transitions always exist from dimerized spin-gapped (bond-order-wave) state to band-insulator and undimerized spin-gapless (Mott-insulator) phase while undimerized spin-gapless phase vanishes at the adiabatic limit. Our results indicate that quantum phonon fluctuations, electron-electron interaction, and ionic potential combine in the formation of the bond-order wave phase.

Nature of the insulating phases in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model

A. P. Kampf, Michael Sekania, G. I. Japaridze +1 more

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional 'ionic' Hubbard model with an alternating periodic potential at half-filling by numerical diagonalization of finite systems with the Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group methods. We identify an insulator–insulator phase transition from a band to a correlated insulator with simultaneous charge and bond-charge order. The transition point is characterized by the vanishing of the optical excitation gap while simultaneously the charge and spin gaps remain finite and equal. Indications for a possible second transition into a Mott-insulator phase are discussed.

Critical properties of the band-insulator-to-Mott-insulator transition in the strong-coupling limit of the ionic Hubbard model

L. Tincani, R. M. Noack, D. Baeriswyl

We investigate the neutral-to-ionic insulator-insulator transition in one-dimensional materials by treating a strong-coupling effective model based on the ionic Hubbard model using the density-matrix renormalization group and finite-size scaling. The effective model, formulated in a spin-one representation, contains a single parameter. We carry out an extensive finite-size scaling analysis of the relevant gaps and susceptibilities to characterize the two zero-temperature transitions. We find that the transition from the ionic band-insulating phase to an intermediate spontaneously dimerized phase is Ising, and the transition from the dimerized phase to the Mott-insulating phase is Kosterlitz-Thouless, in agreement with the field-theory-based predictions.

Mott Transition in the Mass Imbalanced Ionic Hubbard Model at Half Filling

Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, Le Duc Anh, Hoàng Anh Tuấn +2 more

The Mott - Hubbard metal - insulator transition in the half-filled mass imbalanced ionic Hubbard model is investigated using the two-site dynamical mean field theory. We find that for a fixed mass imbalanced parameter r the critical interaction Uc increases when the ionic energy \(\Delta\) is increased. In the other hand, for a fixed \(\Delta\), \(U_c\) decreases with increasing the mass imbalance. We also show the existence of BI phase in the system for the case \(\Delta \ne 0\), \(U=0\) and calculate the staggered charge density \(n_B − n_A\) as a function of the interaction for different values of the mass imbalance. Our results in the limiting cases (\(r = 1\); \(\Delta \ne 0\) or/and \(\Delta = 0\); \(r\ne 1\)) are in good agreement with those obtained from full dynamical mean field theory.

Quantum critical behavior of the one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model

Salvatore R. Manmana, V. Meden, R. M. Noack +1 more

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model. This model is governed by the interplay of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and an alternating one-particle potential. Various many-body energy gaps, the charge-density-wave and bond-order parameters, the electric as well as the bond-order susceptibilities, and the density-density correlation function are calculated using the density-matrix renormalization group method. In order to obtain a comprehensive picture, we investigate systems with open as well as periodic boundary conditions and study the physical properties in different sectors of the phase diagram. A careful finite-size scaling analysis leads to results which give evidence in favor of a scenario with two quantum critical points and an intermediate spontaneously dimerized phase. Our results indicate that the phase transitions are continuous. Using a scaling ansatz we are able to read off critical exponents at the first critical point. In contrast to a bosonization approach, we do not find Ising critical exponents. We show that the low-energy physics of the strong-coupling phase can only partly be understood in terms of the strong-coupling behavior of the ordinary Hubbard model.
