Abstract

We consider rotating finite-size vortex arrays in Bose-Einstein condensates that are confined by cylindrically symmetric external potentials. We show that such systems possess two exact Nambu-Goldstone zero modes associated with two spontaneously broken continuous symmetries of the system. We verify our analytical result via direct numerical diagonalizations of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. We conclude by comparing rotating vortex lattices in superfluids to supersolids and discrete time crystals.

Conformal symmetry of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates and massive Nambu-Goldstone modes

Keisuke Ohashi, Toshiaki Fujimori, Muneto Nitta

The Gross-Pitaevskii or nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation relevant to ultracold atomic gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates possesses a modified Schr\"odinger symmetry in two spatial dimensions, in the presence of a harmonic trapping potential, an (artificial) constant magnetic field (or rotation), and an (artificial) electric field of a quadratic electrostatic potential. We find that a variance and a center of a trapped gas with or without a vorticity can be regarded as massive Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes associated with spontaneous breaking of the modified Schr\"odinger symmetry. We show that the Noether theorem for the modified Schr\"odinger symmetry gives universal equations of motion which describe exact time evolutions of the trapped gases such as a harmonic oscillation, a cyclotron motion, and a breathing oscillation with frequencies determined by the symmetry independent of the details of the system. We further construct an exact effective action for all the NG modes.

Nambu-Goldstone mode in a rotating dilute Bose-Einstein condensate

Masahito Ueda, Tatsuya Nakajima

The Nambu-Goldstone mode (NGM), associated with vortex nucleation in a harmonically confined, two-dimensional dilute Bose-Einstein condensate is studied. We argue, based on exact diagonalization calculations, that the NGM manifests in the lowest-lying envelope of the quasidegenerate spectrum that emerges as the vortex is about to enter the condensate. The quasidegenerate states constitute a series of octupole-mode branches that originate primarily from pairwise repulsive interactions between octupole excitations and are distinguished by the number of admixed quadrupolar excitations. As the vortex approaches the center of the condensate and the system's axisymmetry is restored, the NGM becomes massive due to its coupling to higher rotational bands. We clarify the mechanism of this mass acquisition by using a newly developed projection-operator method.

Nambu-goldstone Modes in Two Segregated Bose-einstein Condensates Limited by Two Hard Walls

Hoàng Văn Quyết

The Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes in the system of two segregated Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) limited by two hard walls are studied by means of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) theory. Based on the double-parabola approximation (DPA) combining with the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations we found four NG modes that proves the failure of the Watanabe-Brauner counting rule and, furthermore, their dispersion relations depend explicitly on the geometrical structure.

Nambu-Goldstone modes in segregated Bose-Einstein condensates

Hiromitsu Takeuchi, Kenichi Kasamatsu

Nambu-Goldstone modes in immiscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates are studied theoretically. In a uniform system, a flat domain wall is stabilized and then the translational invariance normal to the wall is spontaneously broken in addition to the breaking of two U(1) symmetries in the presence of two complex order parameters. We clarify the properties of the low-energy excitations and identify that there exist two Nambu-Goldstone modes: an in-phase phonon with a linear dispersion and a ripplon with a fractional dispersion. The signature of the characteristic dispersion can be verified in segregated condensates in a harmonic potential.

Finite-temperature dynamics of a single vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate: Equilibrium precession and rotational symmetry breaking

Tod M. Wright, Ashton S. Bradley, R. J. Ballagh

We consider a finite-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasi-two-dimensional trap containing a single precessing vortex. We find that such a configuration arises naturally as an ergodic equilibrium of the projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation, when constrained to a finite conserved angular momentum. In an isotropic trapping potential, the condensation of the classical field into an off-axis vortex state breaks the rotational symmetry of the system. We present a methodology to identify the condensate and the Goldstone mode associated with the broken rotational symmetry in the classical-field model. We also examine the variation in vortex trajectories and thermodynamic parameters of the field as the energy of the microcanonical field simulation is varied.

Excitation Spectroscopy of Vortex Lattices in a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate

Sungjong Woo, Leslie O. Baksmaty, Seok Jin Choi +1 more

Excitation spectroscopy of vortex lattices in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates is described. We numerically obtain the Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticle excitations for a broad range of energies and analyze them in the context of the complex dynamics of the system. Our work is carried out in a regime in which standard hydrodynamic assumptions do not hold, and includes features not readily contained within existing treatments.
