Abstract

Capacity of entanglement (CoE), an information-theoretic measure of entanglement, defined as the variance of modular Hamiltonian, is known to capture the deviation from the maximal entanglement. We derive an exact expression for the average eigenstate CoE in fermionic Gaussian states as a finite series, valid for arbitrary bi-partition of the total system. Further, we consider the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (${\mathrm{SYK}}_{2}$) model in the thermodynamic limit and we obtain a closed-form expression of average CoE. In this limit, the variance of the average CoE becomes independent of the system size. Moreover, when the subsystem size is half of the total system, the leading volume-law coefficient approaches a value of ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{2}/8\ensuremath{-}1$. We identify this as a distinguishing feature between integrable and quantum-chaotic systems. We confirm our analytical results by numerical computations.

Page curve for fermionic Gaussian states

Eugenio Bianchi A, Lucas Hackl, Mario Kieburg

In a seminal paper, Page found the exact formula for the average entanglement entropy for a pure random state. We consider the analogous problem for the ensemble of pure fermionic Gaussian states, which plays a crucial role in the context of random free Hamiltonians. Using recent results from random matrix theory, we show that the average entanglement entropy of pure random fermionic Gaussian states in a subsystem of ${N}_{A}$ out of $N$ degrees of freedom is given by ${\ensuremath{\langle}{S}_{A}\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{\mathrm{G}}=(N\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2})\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}(2N)+(\frac{1}{4}\ensuremath{-}{N}_{A})\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}(N)+(\frac{1}{2}+{N}_{A}\ensuremath{-}N)\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}(2N\ensuremath{-}2{N}_{A})\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{4}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}(N\ensuremath{-}{N}_{A})\ensuremath{-}{N}_{A}$, where $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}$ is the digamma function. Its asymptotic behavior in the thermodynamic limit is given by ${\ensuremath{\langle}{S}_{A}\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{\mathrm{G}}=N(log2\ensuremath{-}1)f+N(f\ensuremath{-}1)log(1\ensuremath{-}f)+\frac{1}{2}f+\frac{1}{4}log(1\ensuremath{-}f)\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}O(1/N)$, where $f={N}_{A}/N\ensuremath{\le}1/2$. Remarkably, its leading order agrees with the average over eigenstates of random quadratic Hamiltonians with number conservation, as found by \L{}yd\ifmmode \dot{z}\else \.{z}\fi{}ba, Rigol, and Vidmar. Finally, we compute the variance in the thermodynamic limit, given by the constant ${lim}_{N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}}{(\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{S}_{A})}_{\mathrm{G}}^{2}=\frac{1}{2}[f+{f}^{2}+log(1\ensuremath{-}f)]$.

Eigenstate Entanglement Entropy in Random Quadratic Hamiltonians

Patrycja Łydżba, Marcos Rigol, Lev Vidmar

The eigenstate entanglement entropy is a powerful tool to distinguish integrable from generic quantum-chaotic models. In integrable models, the average eigenstate entanglement entropy (over all Hamiltonian eigenstates) has a volume-law coefficient that generally depends on the subsystem fraction. In contrast, it is maximal (subsystem fraction independent) in quantum-chaotic models. Using random matrix theory for quadratic Hamiltonians, we obtain a closed-form expression for the average eigenstate entanglement entropy as a function of the subsystem fraction. We test it against numerical results for the quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and show that it describes the results for the power-law random banded matrix model (in the delocalized regime). We show that localization in quasimomentum space produces (small) deviations from our analytic predictions.

Eigenstate entanglement in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Yichen Huang, Yingfei Gu

We study the entanglement entropy of eigenstates (including the ground state) of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. We argue for a volume law, whose coefficient can be calculated analytically from the density of states. The coefficient depends on not only the energy density of the eigenstate but also the subsystem size. Very recent numerical results of Liu et al. confirm our analytical results.

Entanglement Entropy of Eigenstates of Quadratic Fermionic Hamiltonians

Lev Vidmar, Lucas Hackl, Eugenio Bianchi A +1 more

In a seminal paper [D. N. Page, Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 1291 (1993)], Page proved that the average entanglement entropy of subsystems of random pure states is ${S}_{\text{ave}}\ensuremath{\simeq}\mathrm{ln}{\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}\ensuremath{-}(1/2){\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}^{2}/\mathcal{D}$ for $1\ensuremath{\ll}{\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}\ensuremath{\le}\sqrt{\mathcal{D}}$, where ${\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}$ and $\mathcal{D}$ are the Hilbert space dimensions of the subsystem and the system, respectively. Hence, typical pure states are (nearly) maximally entangled. We develop tools to compute the average entanglement entropy $⟨S⟩$ of all eigenstates of quadratic fermionic Hamiltonians. In particular, we derive exact bounds for the most general translationally invariant models $\mathrm{ln}{\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}\ensuremath{-}(\mathrm{ln}{\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}{)}^{2}/\mathrm{ln}\mathcal{D}\ensuremath{\le}⟨S⟩\ensuremath{\le}\mathrm{ln}{\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}\ensuremath{-}[1/(2\mathrm{ln}2)](\mathrm{ln}{\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}{)}^{2}/\mathrm{ln}\mathcal{D}$. Consequently, we prove that (i) if the subsystem size is a finite fraction of the system size, then $⟨S⟩<\mathrm{ln}{\mathcal{D}}_{\mathrm{A}}$ in the thermodynamic limit; i.e., the average over eigenstates of the Hamiltonian departs from the result for typical pure states, and (ii) in the limit in which the subsystem size is a vanishing fraction of the system size, the average entanglement entropy is maximal; i.e., typical eigenstates of such Hamiltonians exhibit eigenstate thermalization.

Second-order statistics of fermionic Gaussian states

Youyi Huang, Lu Wei

Abstract We study the statistical behavior of entanglement in quantum bipartite systems over fermionic Gaussian states as measured by von Neumann entropy and entanglement capacity. The focus is on the variance of von Neumann entropy and the mean entanglement capacity that belong to the so-defined second-order statistics. The main results are the exact yet explicit formulas of the two considered second-order statistics for fixed subsystem dimension differences. We also conjecture the exact variance of von Neumann entropy valid for arbitrary subsystem dimensions. Based on the obtained results, we analytically study the numerically observed phenomena of Gaussianity of von Neumann entropy and linear growth of average capacity.

Entanglement Entropy of Eigenstates of Quantum Chaotic Hamiltonians

Lev Vidmar, Marcos Rigol

In quantum statistical mechanics, it is of fundamental interest to understand how close the bipartite entanglement entropy of eigenstates of quantum chaotic Hamiltonians is to maximal. For random pure states in the Hilbert space, the average entanglement entropy is known to be nearly maximal, with a deviation that is, at most, a constant. Here we prove that, in a system that is away from half filling and divided in two equal halves, an upper bound for the average entanglement entropy of random pure states with a fixed particle number and normally distributed real coefficients exhibits a deviation from the maximal value that grows with the square root of the volume of the system. Exact numerical results for highly excited eigenstates of a particle number conserving quantum chaotic model indicate that the bound is saturated with increasing system size.
