Abstract

Abstract In this work, we use Ising chain and Kitaev chain to check the validity of an earlier proposal in arXiv:2011.02859 that enriched fusion (higher) categories provide a unified categorical description of all gapped/gapless quantum liquid phases, including symmetry-breaking phases, topological orders, SPT/SET orders and CFT-type gapless quantum phases. In particular, we show explicitly that, in each gapped phase realized by these two models, the spacetime observables form a fusion category enriched in a braided fusion category such that its monoidal center is trivial. We also study the categorical descriptions of the boundaries of these models. In the end, we obtain a classification of and the categorical descriptions of all 1-dimensional (spatial dimension) gapped quantum phases with a bosonic/fermionic finite onsite symmetry.

Categorical descriptions of one-dimensional gapped phases with Abelian onsite symmetries

Rongge Xu, Zhi-Hao Zhang

In this work, we analyze the macroscopic observables in the $1+1\mathrm{D}$ gapped phases with Abelian onsite symmetries and show that the spacetime observables for each gapped phase form a clear structure that can be mathematically described by enriched fusion categories, which uncovers the behavior of nonlocal excitations that were blurry in traditional Landau paradigm. These categorical descriptions not only generate the known classification results for symmetry preserving and breaking phases, but also unifies lattice dualities in a broader picture. After analyzing the general lattice model together with their boundaries, we give explicit examples including nontrivial SPT phase, where nontrivial boundaries can be given directly through our classification. Using enriched categorical descriptions, the lattice dualities and their gapped phases are unified under a holographic duality between an 2d. topological order with gapped 1d boundaries and $1+1\mathrm{D}$ gapped quantum liquids with a categorical symmetry, which shed light on a unified definition of all quantum phases.

Classification of topological phases with finite internal symmetries in all dimensions

Liang Kong, Tian Lan, Xiao-Gang Wen +2 more

A bstract We develop a mathematical theory of symmetry protected trivial (SPT) orders and anomaly-free symmetry enriched topological (SET) orders in all dimensions via two different approaches with an emphasis on the second approach. The first approach is to gauge the symmetry in the same dimension by adding topological excitations as it was done in the 2d case, in which the gauging process is mathematically described by the minimal modular extensions of unitary braided fusion 1-categories. This 2d result immediately generalizes to all dimensions except in 1d, which is treated with special care. The second approach is to use the 1-dimensional higher bulk of the SPT/SET order and the boundary-bulk relation. This approach also leads us to a precise mathematical description and a classification of SPT/SET orders in all dimensions. The equivalence of these two approaches, together with known physical results, provides us with many precise mathematical predictions.

A mathematical theory of gapless edges of 2d topological orders. Part I

Liang Kong, Hao Zheng

Abstract This is the first part of a two-part work on a unified mathematical theory of gapped and gapless edges of 2d topological orders. We analyze all the possible observables on the 1+1D world sheet of a chiral gapless edge of a 2d topological order, and show that these observables form an enriched unitary fusion category, the Drinfeld center of which is precisely the unitary modular tensor category associated to the bulk. This mathematical description of a chiral gapless edge automatically includes that of a gapped edge (i.e. a unitary fusion category) as a special case. Therefore, we obtain a unified mathematical description and a classification of both gapped and chiral gapless edges of a given 2d topological order. In the process of our analysis, we encounter an interesting and reoccurring phenomenon: spatial fusion anomaly, which leads us to propose the Principle of Universality at RG fixed points for all quantum field theories. Our theory also implies that all chiral gapless edges can be obtained from a so-called topological Wick rotations. This fact leads us to propose, at the end of this work, a surprising correspondence between gapped and gapless phases in all dimensions.

Gapless edges of 2d topological orders and enriched monoidal categories

Liang Kong, Hao Zheng

In this work, we give a mathematical description of a chiral gapless edge of a 2d topological order (without symmetry). We show that the observables on the 1+1D world sheet of such an edge consist of a family of topological edge excitations, boundary CFT's and walls between boundary CFT's. These observables can be described by a chiral algebra and an enriched monoidal category. This mathematical description automatically includes that of gapped edges as special cases. Therefore, it gives a unified framework to study both gapped and gapless edges. Moreover, the boundary-bulk duality also holds for gapless edges. More precisely, the unitary modular tensor category that describes the 2d bulk phase is exactly the Drinfeld center of the enriched monoidal category that describes the gapless/gapped edge. We propose a classification of all gapped and chiral gapless edges of a given bulk phase. In the end, we explain how modular-invariant bulk rational conformal field theories naturally emerge on certain gapless walls between two trivial phases.

Algebraic higher symmetry and categorical symmetry: A holographic and entanglement view of symmetry

Liang Kong, Lan, Tian, Xiao-Gang Wen +2 more

We introduce the notion of algebraic higher symmetry, which generalizes higher symmetry and is beyond higher group. We show that an algebraic higher symmetry in a bosonic system in $n$-dimensional space is characterized and classified by a local fusion $n$-category. We find another way to describe algebraic higher symmetry by restricting to symmetric sub Hilbert space where symmetry transformations all become trivial. In this case, algebraic higher symmetry can be fully characterized by a non-invertible gravitational anomaly (i.e. an topological order in one higher dimension). Thus we also refer to non-invertible gravitational anomaly as categorical symmetry to stress its connection to symmetry. This provides a holographic and entanglement view of symmetries. For a system with a categorical symmetry, its gapped state must spontaneously break part (not all) of the symmetry, and the state with the full symmetry must be gapless. Using such a holographic point of view, we obtain (1) the gauging of the algebraic higher symmetry; (2) the classification of anomalies for an algebraic higher symmetry; (3) the equivalence between classes of systems, with different (potentially anomalous) algebraic higher symmetries or different sets of low energy excitations, as long as they have the same categorical symmetry; (4) the classification of gapped liquid phases for bosonic/fermionic systems with a categorical symmetry, as gapped boundaries of a topological order in one higher dimension (that corresponds to the categorical symmetry). This classification includes symmetry protected trivial (SPT) orders and symmetry enriched topological (SET) orders with an algebraic higher symmetry.

Classification of (2+1)-dimensional topological order and symmetry-protected topological order for bosonic and fermionic systems with on-site symmetries

Tian Lan, Liang Kong, Xiao-Gang Wen

Large classes of matter have been systematized before by using a pair of groups to classify all spontaneous symmetry breaking phases or by using a pair of groups plus projective representations to classify all gapped quantum phases of one-dimensional boson and fermion systems with various symmetries. In this paper, the authors go beyond this and use a pair of groups plus three braided fusion categories and a chiral central charge in order to classify gapped quantum phases of two-dimensional boson and fermion systems with various finite symmetries. This allows, among other things, to generate many group tables of two-dimensional gapped phases.
