Abstract

Interacting central spin systems, in which a central spin is coupled to a strongly correlated spin bath with intrabath interaction, consist of an important class of spin systems beyond the usual Gaudin magnet. These systems are relevant to several realistic setups and serve as an interesting platform to study interaction controlled decoherence and frustration induced instability of magnetic order. Using an equations-of-motion method based on analytical representations of spin-operator matrix elements in the XX chain, we obtain exact long-time dynamics of a generalized Heisenberg star consisting of a spin-$S$ central spin and an inhomogeneously coupled XXZ chain of $N\ensuremath{\le}16$ bath spins. In contrast to previous studies where the central spin dynamics is mainly concerned, we focus on the influence of the central spin on the dynamics of magnetic orders within the spin bath. By preparing the XXZ bath in a N\'eel state, we find that in the gapless phase of the bath even weak system-bath coupling could lead to nearly perfect relaxation of the antiferromagnetic order. In the gapped phase, the staggered magnetization decays rapidly and approaches a steady value that increases with increasing anisotropy parameter. These findings suggest the possibility of controlling internal dynamics of strongly correlated many-spin systems by certain coupled auxiliary systems of even few degrees of freedom. We also study the dynamics of the R\'enyi entanglement entropy of the central spin when the bath is prepared in the ground state. Both the overall profile and initial growth rate of the R\'enyi entropy are found to exhibit minima at the critical point of the XXZ bath.

Central spin dynamics and relaxation of antiferromagnetic order in a central-spin$-$XXZ-chain system.

Jiaxiu Li, Ye Cao, Ning Wu

Using an equations-of-motion method based on analytical representations of spin-operator matrix elements in the XX chain, we obtain exact long-time dynamics of a composite system consisting of a spin-$S$ central spin and an XXZ chain, with the two interacting via inhomogeneous XXZ-type hyperfine coupling. Three types of initial bath states, namely, the Neel state, the ground state, and the spin coherent state are considered. We study the reduced dynamics of both the central spin and the XXZ bath. For the Neel state, we find that strong hyperfine couplings slow down the initial decay but facilitate the long-time relaxation of the antiferromagnetic order. Moreover, for fixed hyperfine coupling a larger $S$ leads to a faster initial decay of the antiferromagnetic order. We then study the purity dynamics of an $S=1$ central spin coupled to an XXZ chain prepared in the ground state. The time-dependent purity is found to reach the highest values at the critical point. We finally study the polarization dynamics of the central spin homogeneously coupled to a bath prepared in the spin coherent state. Under the resonant condition, the polarization dynamics for $S>\frac{1}{2}$ exhibits collapse-revival behaviors with fine structures. However, the collapse-revival phenomena is found to be fragile with respect to the anisotropic intrabath coupling.

Ground-state and dynamical properties of a spin-S Heisenberg star

Jiaxiu Li, Ning Wu

Abstract We generalize the Heisenberg star consisting of a spin-1/2 central spin and a homogeneously coupled spin bath modeled by the XXX ring [Richter J and Voigt A 1994 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 27 1139-1149] to the case of arbitrary central-spin size S < N/2, where N is the number of bath spins. We describe how to block-diagonalize the model based on the Bethe ansatz solution of the XXX ring, with the dimension of each block Hamiltonian ≤ 2S + 1. We obtain all the eigenenergies and explicit expressions of the sub-ground states in each l-subspace with l being the total angular momentum of the bath. Both the eigenenergies and the sub-ground states have distinct structures depending whether S ≤ l or l < S. The absolute ground-state energy and the corresponding l as functions of the intrabath coupling are numerically calculated for N = 16 and S = 1, 2, ⋯ ,7 and their behaviors are quantitatively explained in the weak and strong intrabath coupling limits. We then study the dynamics of the antiferromagnetic order within an XXX bath prepared in the Néel state. Effects of the initial state of the central spin, the value of S, and the system-bath coupling strength on the staggered magnetization dynamics are investigated. By including a Zeeman term for the central spin and the anisotropy in the intrabath coupling, we also study the polarization dynamics of the central spin for a bath prepared in the spin coherent state. Under the resonant condition and at the isotropic point of the bath, the polarization dynamics for S > 1/2 exhibit collapse-revival behaviors with fine structures. However, the collapse-revival phenomena are found to be fragile with respect to the anisotropy of the intrabath coupling.

Quantum correlations of Two-Qubit XXZ Heisenberg Chain with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction coupled to bath spin as non-Markovian environment

M. Mahdian, M. Bagherpour Jeddi

We consider the quantum correlations (entanglement and quantum discord) dynamics of two coupled spin qubits with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction influenced by a locally external magnetic field along $z$-direction and coupled to bath spin-1/2 particles as independent non-Markovian environment. We find that with increasing $D_{z}$ and decreasing $J_{z}$, the value of entanglement and quantum discord increase for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic materials. Not that, this growth is more for the ferromagnetic materials. In addition, we perceive that entanglement and quantum discord decrease with increased temperature and increased coupling constants between reduced system and bath. But, strong quantum correlations within the spins of bath reduce decoherence effects. We discuss about type of the constituent material of the central spins that it can speedup the quantum information processing and as a result, we perceive that one can improve and control the quantum information processing with correct selection of the properties of the reduced system ($J$, $J_{z}$, $D_{z}$).

Decoherence of a single spin coupled to an interacting spin bath

Ning Wu, Nina Fröhling, Xing Xi +4 more

Decoherence of a central spin coupled to an interacting spin bath via inhomogeneous Heisenberg coupling is studied by two different approaches, namely an exact equations of motion (EOMs) method and a Chebyshev expansion technique (CET). By assuming a wheel topology of the bath spins with uniform nearest-neighbor $XX$-type intrabath coupling, we examine the central spin dynamics with the bath prepared in two different types of bath initial conditions. For fully polarized baths in strong magnetic fields, the polarization dynamics of the central spin exhibits a collapse-revival behavior in the intermediate-time regime. Under an antiferromagnetic bath initial condition, the two methods give excellently consistent central spin decoherence dynamics for finite-size baths of $N\ensuremath{\le}14$ bath spins. The decoherence factor is found to drop off abruptly on a short time scale and approach a finite plateau value which depends on the intrabath coupling strength nonmonotonically. In the ultrastrong intrabath coupling regime, the plateau values show an oscillatory behavior depending on whether $N/2$ is even or odd. The observed results are interpreted qualitatively within the framework of the EOM and perturbation analysis. The effects of anisotropic spin-bath coupling and inhomogeneous intrabath bath couplings are briefly discussed. Possible experimental realization of the model in a modified quantum corral setup is suggested.

Induced decoherence and entanglement by interacting quantum spin baths

Cheng-Yan Lai, Jo-Tzu Hung, Chung‐Yu Mou +1 more

The reduced dynamics of a single qubit or two qubits coupled to an interacting quantum spin bath modeled by an $XXZ$ spin chain is investigated. By using the method of a time-dependent density matrix renormalization group $(t\text{-DMRG})$, we go beyond the uniform coupling central spin model and nonperturbatively evaluate the induced decoherence and entanglement. It is shown that both the decoherence and the entanglement strongly depend on the phase of the underlying spin bath. We show that in general, spin baths can induce entanglement for an initially disentangled pair of qubits. Furthermore, when the spin bath is in the ferromagnetic phase because the qubits directly couple to the order parameter, the reduced dynamics shows an oscillatory type behavior. On the other hand, only for the paramagnetic and the antiferromagnetic phases do the initially entangled states suffer from an entanglement sudden death. By calculating the concurrence, the finite disentanglement time is mapped out for all of the phases in the phase diagram of the spin bath.

Unconventional Quantum Criticality in Long-Range Spin-1 Chains: Insights from Entanglement Entropy and Bipartite Fluctuations

Justin Tim-Lok Chau, Jiarui Zhao, Nicolas Laflorencie +1 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1 Heisenberg chain with staggered long-range (LR) interactions decaying as $\propto r^{-α}$ using a quantum Monte Carlo approach based on the split-spin representation. This formulation enables efficient large-scale simulations by mapping the spin-1 model onto spin-$1/2$ degrees of freedom with local projection constraints. We resolve the continuous quantum phase transition between the gapped Haldane phase at large $α$ (short-range regime) and a gapless antiferromagnetically ordered Néel phase at small $α$ (LR regime), where the continuous SU(2) symmetry is broken. From finite-size scaling and crossing point analyses, we determine the critical point to be at $α_c = 2.49(1)$ and extract the associated critical exponents, which indicate unconventional criticality. In particular, the transition is found to be nonconformal, characterized by a dynamical exponent $z \neq 1$. We further analyze the scaling of entanglement entropy and bipartite fluctuations across the transition, and determine the corresponding universal scalings in both phases and at criticality.
