Abstract

The authors study thermodynamic properties of the SU($N$) Fermi-Hubbard model in 2D square lattices and discover simple scaling laws of the energy, the number of on-site pairs, and the kinetic energy with respect to $N$ when the temperature is above the superexchange energy. The results establish a limit to the cooling for SU($N$) fermions in 2D, in contrast to the arbitrarily low temperatures that could potentially be achieved in 1D.

Equation of State and Thermometry of the 2D SU ( N ) Fermi-Hubbard Model

G. Pasqualetti, Oscar Bettermann, Nelson Darkwah Oppong +6 more

We characterize the equation of state (EoS) of the SU(N>2) Fermi-Hubbard Model (FHM) in a two-dimensional single-layer square optical lattice. We probe the density and the site occupation probabilities as functions of interaction strength and temperature for N=3, 4, and 6. Our measurements are used as a benchmark for state-of-the-art numerical methods including determinantal quantum Monte Carlo and numerical linked cluster expansion. By probing the density fluctuations, we compare temperatures determined in a model-independent way by fitting measurements to numerically calculated EoS results, making this a particularly interesting new step in the exploration and characterization of the SU(N) FHM.

Pomeranchuk Cooling of SU(2N) Ultracold Fermions in Optical Lattices

Zi Cai, Hsiang-Hsuan Hung, Lei Wang +2 more

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a half-filled SU(2N) Hubbard model in the two-dimensional square lattice by the method of the determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulation, which is free of the fermion "sign problem." The large number of hyperfine-spin components enhances spin fluctuations, which facilitates the Pomeranchuk cooling to temperatures comparable to the superexchange energy scale in the case of SU(6). Various physical quantities including entropy, charge fluctuations, and spin correlations are calculated.

$\mathbb{Z}_L$ symmetry breaking in SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard dots at zero and finite temperature

Loïc Herviou, Elodie Campan, Pierre Nataf

We address the SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard model on a chain, with $N$ the number of degenerate orbitals, or colors, for each fermion. In the limit of both large number of colors $N$ and particles, and small number of sites $L \geq 2$, the model is proved to undergo a $\mathbb{Z}_L$ symmetry breaking for attractive local interaction amplitude $U$. Using a combination of Exact Diagonalization with full SU(N) symmetry, generalized L-levels Holstein-Primakoff transformation, Hartree-Fock method and large-N saddle point approximation of the partition function, we extend the results obtained in [PRA 111, L020201 (2025)] to $L \geq 3$ and finite temperature $T>0$. In particular, we show that at $T=0$ for $U

Universal thermodynamics of the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Song Cheng, Yi-Cong Yu, Murray T. Batchelor +1 more

The one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model, describing electrons on a lattice with an on-site repulsive interaction, provides a paradigm for the physics of quantum many-body phenomena. Here, by solving the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations, we study the universal thermodynamics, quantum criticality, and magnetism of the 1D attractive Hubbard model. We show that the compressibility and the susceptibility of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like state obey simple additivity rules at low temperatures, indicating an existence of two free quantum fluids. The magnetic properties, such as magnetization and susceptibility, reveal three physical regions: quantum fluids at low temperatures, a non-Fermi liquid at high temperatures, and the quantum fluid to non-Fermi liquid crossover in between. The lattice interaction is seen to significantly influence the nature of the FFLO-like state in 1D. Furthermore, we show that the dimensionless Wilson ratio provides an ideal parameter to map out the various phase boundaries and to characterize the two free fluids of the FLLO-like state. The quantum scaling functions for the thermal and magnetic properties yield the same dynamic critical exponent $z=2$ and correlation critical exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ in the quantum critical region whenever a phase transition occurs. Our results provide a rigorous understanding of quantum criticality and free fluids of many-body systems on a 1D lattice.

Fermions in 2D Optical Lattices: Temperature and Entropy Scales for Observing Antiferromagnetism and Superfluidity

Thereza Paiva, Richard T. Scalettar, Mohit Randeria +1 more

One of the major challenges in realizing antiferromagnetic and superfluid phases in optical lattices is the ability to cool fermions. We determine constraints on the entropy for observing these phases in two-dimensional Hubbard models using determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find that an entropy per particle approximately = ln2 is sufficient to observe the insulating gap in the repulsive Hubbard model at half-filling, or the pairing pseudogap in the attractive case. Observing antiferromagnetic correlations or superfluidity in 2D systems requires a further reduction in entropy by a factor of 3 or more. In contrast with higher dimensions, we find that adiabatic cooling is not useful to achieve the required low temperatures. We also show that double-occupancy measurements are useful for thermometry for temperatures greater than the nearest-neighbor hopping energy.
