Abstract

The fixed area states are previously discussed in the quantum error-correction codes interpretation of $\mathrm{AdS}/\mathrm{CFT}$. The dual bulk geometry is constructed by gravitational path integrals. In this paper we show the fixed area states correspondence in conformal field theories (CFTs), which are associated with the spectrum decomposition of reduced density matrix ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{A}$ for a subsystem $A$. For two-dimensional CFTs we directly build the bulk metric, which is consistent with the expected geometry of the fixed area states. For arbitrary pure state $|\ensuremath{\psi}⟩$ with a geometric dual in the bulk we also find the consistency by using the gravity dual of R\'enyi entropy. We also obtain the parameters relation between the bulk geometry and boundary state. The pure state $|\ensuremath{\psi}⟩$ can be expanded as a superposition of the fixed area states. Motivated by this, we propose an area operator ${\stackrel{^}{A}}^{\ensuremath{\psi}}$. The fixed area state is the eigenstate of ${\stackrel{^}{A}}^{\ensuremath{\psi}}$, the associated eigenvalue is related to the R\'enyi entropy of subsystem $A$ in this state. The Ryu-Takayanagi formula can be expressed as the expectation value $⟨\ensuremath{\psi}|{\stackrel{^}{A}}^{\ensuremath{\psi}}|\ensuremath{\psi}⟩$ divided by $4G$, where $G$ is the Newton constant. We further show the fluctuation of the area operator in the geometric state $|\ensuremath{\psi}⟩$ is suppressed in the semiclassical limit $G\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$.

Flat entanglement spectra in fixed-area states of quantum gravity

Xi Dong, Daniel Harlow, Donald M. Marolf

A bstract We use the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational path integral to investigate gravita- tional entanglement at leading order O (1 /G ). We argue that semiclassical states prepared by a Euclidean path integral have the property that projecting them onto a subspace in which the Ryu-Takayanagi or Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surface has definite area gives a state with a flat entanglement spectrum at this order in gravitational perturbation theory. This means that the reduced density matrix can be approximated as proportional to the identity to the extent that its Renyi entropies Sn are independent of n at this order. The n -dependence of Sn in more general states then arises from sums over the RT/HRT- area, which are generally dominated by different values of this area for each n . This provides a simple picture of gravitational entanglement, bolsters the connection between holographic systems and tensor network models, clarifies the bulk interpretation of alge- braic centers which arise in the quantum error-correcting description of holography, and strengthens the connection between bulk and boundary modular Hamiltonians described by Jafferis, Lewkowycz, Maldacena, and Suh.

Holographic entanglement entropy with conformal boundary conditions

Elena Cáceres, Hare Krishna, Harita Palani Balaji +1 more

We study holographic entanglement entropy in 3-dimensional AdS gravity with conformal boundary conditions which fix the conformal class of the boundary metric and its extrinsic curvature, $K$, while leaving the Weyl mode dynamical. Extending Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Dong's replica construction, we derive the corresponding holographic entanglement entropy formula. We show that the fluctuating Weyl mode does not contribute additional entropy. The entropy of the full boundary is therefore the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, and the entropy of a boundary subregion continues to obey the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, namely, the area of a minimal surface divided by $4G_N$. We carry out explicit calculations for global AdS, rotating and non-rotating BTZ geometries. For an interval in AdS$_3$ we find that the $K$-dependent holographic entanglement entropy is governed by $c_m=\frac{3 \ell}{2 G_N}.$ For a thermal state at high conformal temperatures we find that, the entropy is governed by $c_{\rm eff}=\frac{3 \ell}{2 G_N} \frac{K \ell- \sqrt{K^2 \ell^2-4}}{2}$, the same effective central charge that governs the Cardy-like density of states, in agreement with previous results in the literature. Finally, we also compute the entanglement entropy directly from the conjectured dual boundary theory - a holographic CFT coupled with time-like Liouville theory and deformed by a marginal $T \bar{T}$ like operator - and find $S_{EE} =\frac{c_{\rm eff}}{3} \ln\!\left(\frac{2 R \sinϕ_0}ε\right) .$ This result for the state with no operator insertions (vacuum state ), provides an independent boundary realization of $c_{\mathrm{eff}}$ while clarifying that this state is not the state dual to global AdS.

Entanglement entropy and algebraic holography

Bernard S. Kay

In 2006, Ryu and Takayanagi (RT) pointed out that (with a suitable cutoff) the entanglement entropy between two complementary regions of an equal-time surface of a d+1-dimensional conformal field theory on the conformal boundary of AdS_{d+2} is, when the AdS radius is appropriately related to the parameters of the CFT, equal to 1/4G times the area of the d-dimensional minimal surface in the AdS bulk which has the junction of those complementary regions as its boundary, where G is the bulk Newton constant. We point out here that the RT-equality implies that, in the quantum theory on the bulk AdS background which is related to the boundary CFT according to Rehren's 1999 algebraic holography theorem, the entanglement entropy between two complementary bulk Rehren wedges is equal to 1/4G times the (suitably cut off) area of their shared ridge. (This follows because of the geometrical fact that, for complementary ball-shaped regions, the RT minimal surface is precisely the shared ridge of the complementary bulk Rehren wedges which correspond, under Rehren's bulk-wedge to boundary double-cone bijection, to the complementary boundary double-cones whose bases are the RT complementary balls.) This is consistent with the Bianchi-Meyers conjecture -- that, in a theory of quantum gravity, the entanglement entropy, S, between the degrees of freedom of a given region with those of its complement is S = A/4G (+ lower order terms) -- but only if the phrase 'degrees of freedom' is replaced by 'matter degrees of freedom'. It also supports related previous arguments of the author -- consistent with the author's 'matter-gravity entanglement hypothesis' -- that the AdS/CFT correspondence is actually only a bijection between just the matter (i.e. non-gravity) sector operators of the bulk and the boundary CFT operators.

Holographic Renyi entropy from quantum error correction

Chris Akers, Pratik Rath

A bstract We study Renyi entropies S n in quantum error correcting codes and compare the answer to the cosmic brane prescription for computing $$ {\tilde{S}}_n\equiv {n}^2{\partial}_n\left(\frac{n-1}{n}{S}_n\right) $$ S ˜ n ≡ n 2 ∂ n n − 1 n S n . We find that general operator algebra codes have a similar, more general prescription. Notably, for the AdS/CFT code to match the specific cosmic brane prescription, the code must have maximal entanglement within eigenspaces of the area operator. This gives us an improved definition of the area operator, and establishes a stronger connection between the Ryu-Takayanagi area term and the edge modes in lattice gauge theory. We also propose a new interpretation of existing holographic tensor networks as area eigenstates instead of smooth geometries. This interpretation would explain why tensor networks have historically had trouble modeling the Renyi entropy spectrum of holographic CFTs, and it suggests a method to construct holographic networks with the correct spectrum.

The Ryu-Takayanagi Formula from Quantum Error Correction: An Algebraic Treatment of the Boundary CFT

Helia Kamal, Geoff Penington

It was recently shown by Harlow that any quantum error correcting code, satisfying the same complementary recovery properties as AdS/CFT, will obey a version of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. In his most general result, Harlow allowed the bulk algebras to have nontrivial center, which was necessary for the "area operator" in this Ryu-Takayanagi formula to be nontrivial. However, the boundary Hilbert space was still assumed to factorise into Hilbert spaces associated with complementary boundary regions. We extend this work to include more general boundary theories, such as gauge theories, where the subalgebras associated with boundary regions may also have nontrivial center. We show the equivalence of a set of four conditions for a bulk algebra to be reconstructable from a boundary algebra, and then show that complementary recovery implies that the algebraic boundary entropy obeys a Ryu-Takayanagi formula. In contrast, we show that the distillable boundary entropy does not obey any such formula. If an additional "log dim R" term is added to the algebraic entropy, it will still obey a Ryu-Takayanagi formula, with a different area operator. However, since the "log dim R" term is a sum over local boundary contributions, we argue that it can only be related to the regularisation of the area at the bulk cut-off.

Rényi entropies and area operator from gravity with Hayward term

Botta Cantcheff, Marcelo Angel Nicolas, Pedro J. Martínez, Zárate Chahín, Juan Felipe

In the context of the holographic duality, the entanglement entropy of ordinary QFT in a subregion in the boundary is given by a quarter of the area of an minimal surface embedded in the bulk spacetime. This rule has been also extended to a suitable one-parameter generalization of the von-Neuman entropy $\\hat{S}_n$ that is related to the Renyi entropies $S_n$, as given by the area of a \\emph{cosmic brane} minimally coupled with gravity, with a tension related to $n$ that vanishes as $n\\to1$, and moreover, this parameter can be analytically extended to arbitrary real values. However, the brane action plays no role in the duality and cannot be considered a part of the theory of gravity, thus it is used as an auxiliary tool to find the correct background geometry. In this work we study the construction of the gravitational (reduced) density matrix from holographic states, whose wave-functionals are described as euclidean path integrals with arbitrary conditions on the asymptotic boundaries, and argue that in general, a non-trivial Hayward term must be haven into account. So we propose that the gravity model with a coupled Nambu-Goto action is not an artificial tool to account for the Renyi entropies, but it is present in the own gravity action through a Hayward term. As a result we show that the computations using replicas simplify considerably and we recover the holographic prescriptions for the measures of entanglement entropy; in particular, derive an area law for the original Renyi entropies ($S_n$) related to a minimal surface in the $n$ replicated spacetime. Moreover, we show that the gravitational modular flow contains the area operator and can explain the Jafferis-Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Suh proposal.
