Renormalization Group Flows on Line Defects

Abstract

We consider line defects in d-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs). The ambient CFT places nontrivial constraints on renormalization group (RG) flows on such line defects. We show that the flow on line defects is consequently irreversible and furthermore a canonical decreasing entropy function exists. This construction generalizes the g theorem to line defects in arbitrary dimensions. We demonstrate our results in a flow between Wilson loops in four dimensions.

Entropic g Theorem in General Spacetime Dimensions

Horacio Casini, Ignacio Salazar Landea, Gonzalo Torroba

We establish the irreversibility of renormalization group flows on a pointlike defect inserted in a d-dimensional Lorentzian conformal field theory. We identify the impurity entropy g with the quantum relative entropy in two equivalent ways. One involves a null deformation of the Cauchy surface, and the other is given in terms of a local quench protocol. Positivity and monotonicity of the relative entropy imply that g decreases monotonically along renormalization group flows, and provides a clear information-theoretic meaning for this irreversibility.

Irreversibility in quantum field theories with boundaries

Horacio Casini, Ignacio Salazar Landea, Gonzalo Torroba

Abstract We study conformal field theories with boundaries, and their boundary renormalization group (RG) flows, using methods from quantum information theory. Positivity of the relative entropy, together with unitarity and Lorentz invariance, give rise to bounds that characterize the irreversibility of such flows. This generalizes the recently proved entropic g-theorem to higher dimensions. In 2 + 1 dimensions with a boundary, we prove the entropic b-theorem — the decrease of the two-dimensional Weyl anomaly under boundary RG flows. In higher dimensions, the bound implies that the leading area coefficient of the entanglement entropy induced by the defect decreases along the flow. Our proof unifies these properties, and provides an information-theoretic interpretation in terms of the distinguishability between the short distance and long distance states. Finally, we establish a sum rule for the change in the area term in theories with boundaries, which could have implications for models with localized gravity.

Defect localized entropy: Renormalization group and holography

Ma-Ke Yuan, Yang Zhou

We consider p-dimensional defects in D-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) and construct defect localized entropy by performing Casini-Huerta-Myers transformation for the system with defect. The defect localized entropy is a measure of entanglement between the degrees of freedom localized on the defect. We show that at the fixed point of defect renormalization group (RG) flow, defect localized entropy is equal to minus defect free energy for universal part. We construct defect C-functions from the defect localized entropy for surface defects and volume defects, and show that they monotonically decrease in both cases following the entropic method by Casini and Huerta. We also study the holographic dual of defect localized entropy and find that it is given by the minimal surface located at string or brane worldvolume embedded in the holographic bulk.

Towards a C-theorem in defect CFT

Nozomu Kobayashi, Tatsuma Nishioka, Yoshiki Sato +1 more

Abstract We explore a C-theorem in defect conformal field theories (DCFTs) that unify all the known conjectures and theorems until now. We examine as a candidate C-function the additional contributions from conformal defects to the sphere free energy and the entanglement entropy across a sphere in a number of examples including holographic models. We find the two quantities are equivalent, when suitably regularized, for codimension-one defects (or boundaries), but differ by a universal constant term otherwise. Moreover, we find in a few field theoretic examples that the sphere free energy decreases but the entanglement entropy increases along a certain renormalization group (RG) flow triggered by a defect localized perturbation which is assumed to have a trivial IR fixed point without defects. We hence propose a C-theorem in DCFTs stating that the increment of the regularized sphere free energy due to the defect does not increase under any defect RG flow. We also provide a proof of our proposal in several holographic models of defect RG flows.

Planar RG flows on line defects

Ivri Nagar, Amit Sever, De-liang Zhong

A bstract We study a class of renormalization group flows on line defects that can be described by a generalized free field with ordered planar contractions on the line. They are realized, for example, in large N gauge theories with matter in the fundamental representation and arise generically in non-relativistic CFTs. We analyze the flow exactly and compute the change in the g -function between the UV and IR fixed points. We relate the result to the change in the two-point function of the displacement operator and check the monotonicity of the defect entropy along the flow analytically. Finally, we give a general realization of this type of flow starting from the direct sum of the IR fixed point and a trivial line. This type of defect renormalization group flow parallels the well-studied case of double-trace flow.

Topological defect lines and renormalization group flows in two dimensions

Chi‐Ming Chang, Ying-Hsuan Lin, Shu-Heng Shao +2 more

A bstract We consider topological defect lines (TDLs) in two-dimensional conformal field theories. Generalizing and encompassing both global symmetries and Verlinde lines, TDLs together with their attached defect operators provide models of fusion categories without braiding. We study the crossing relations of TDLs, discuss their relation to the ’t Hooft anomaly, and use them to constrain renormalization group flows to either conformal critical points or topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). We show that if certain non-invertible TDLs are preserved along a RG flow, then the vacuum cannot be a non-degenerate gapped state. For various massive flows, we determine the infrared TQFTs completely from the consideration of TDLs together with modular invariance.
