Abstract

An extended Bose-Hubbard model (EBHM) with three- and four-body constraints can be feasible in cold atoms in an optical lattice. A rich phase structure including various symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases is obtained numerically with suitable parameter settings and particle filling. The SPT phase is characterized by the Berry phase as a local topological order parameter and the structure of the entanglement spectrum (ES). Based on the presence of various topological phases, separated by gapless phase boundaries, the EBHM exhibits various bosonic topological pumps, which are constructed by connecting the different SPT phases without gap closing. The bulk topological pumps exhibit the plateau transitions characterized by many-body Chern numbers. For the system with boundary, the center of mass (CoM) under grand canonical ensemble elucidates the contributions of multiple edge states and reveals the topology of the system. We demonstrate that the interacting bosonic pumps obey the bulk-edge correspondence.

Z2×Z2 symmetry and Z4 Berry phase of bosonic ladders

Yoshihito Kuno, Yasuhiro Hatsugai

Bose gas on a two-leg ladder exhibits an interesting topological phase. We show the presence of a bosonic symmetry-protected-topological (SPT) phase protected by ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}$ symmetry. This symmetry leads to ${Z}_{4}$ fractional quantization of the ${Z}_{4}$ Berry phase, which is a topological order parameter to identify the bulk. Using the ${Z}_{4}$ Berry phase, we show that the interacting bosonic system possesses rich topological phases depending on the particle density and strength of interaction. Based on the bulk-edge correspondence, each edge state of the SPT phases is discussed in relation to the ${Z}_{4}$ Berry phases. In particular, we have found an intermediate phase that is not adiabatically connected to a simple adiabatic limit that possesses unconventional edge states, which we numerically demonstrate by employing the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm.

Visualizing a bosonic symmetry protected topological phase in an interacting fermion model

Han-Qing Wu, Yuan-Yao He, Yi‐Zhuang You +5 more

Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in free fermion and interacting bosonic systems have been classified, but the physical phenomena of interacting fermionic SPT phases have not been fully explored. Here, employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the edge physics of a bilayer Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with zigzag ribbon geometry. Our unbiased numerical results show that the fermion edge modes are gapped out by interaction, while the bosonic edge modes remain gapless at the $(1+1)d$ boundary, before the bulk quantum phase transition to a topologically trivial phase. Therefore, finite fermion gaps both in the bulk and on the edge, together with the robust gapless bosonic edge modes, prove that our system becomes an emergent bosonic SPT phase at low energy, which is directly observed in an interacting fermion lattice model.

Topological pump and its plateau transitions of $N$-leg spin ladder

Yamamoto, Kota, Yoshihito Kuno, Tomonari Mizoguchi +2 more

A topological pump on an $N\textrm{-}$leg spin ladder is discussed by introducing spatial clusterization whose adiabatic limit is a set of $2N\textrm{-}$site staircase clusters. We set a pump path in the parameter space that connects two different symmetry protected topological phases. By introducing a symmetry breaking staggered magnetic field, the system is always gapped during the pump. In the topological pump {thus obtained}, the bulk Chern number is given by the number of the critical points enclosed by the pump path. Plateau transitions characterized by the Chern number are demonstrated associated with deformation of the pump path. We find that there are $N$ critical points enclosed by the pump path for the $N\textrm{-}$leg ladder. The ground state phase diagram without symmetry breaking terms is numerically investigated by using the quantized Berry phase. We also discuss the physical picture of edge states in the diagonal boundary, and numerically demonstrate the bulk-edge correspondence for $N=2,3$ cases.

Symmetry-Protected Topological Orders in Interacting Bosonic Systems

Xie Chen, Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Zheng-Xin Liu +1 more

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are bulk-gapped quantum phases with symmetries, which have gapless or degenerate boundary states as long as the symmetries are not broken. The SPT phases in free fermion systems, such as topological insulators, can be classified; however, it is not known what SPT phases exist in general interacting systems. We present a systematic way to construct SPT phases in interacting bosonic systems. Just as group theory allows us to construct 230 crystal structures in three-dimensional space, we use group cohomology theory to systematically construct different interacting bosonic SPT phases in any dimension and with any symmetry, leading to the discovery of bosonic topological insulators and superconductors.

Symmetry-protected topological phases in lattice gauge theories: Topological QED2

Giuseppe Magnifico, Davide Vodola, Elisa Ercolessi +3 more

The interplay of symmetry, topology, and many-body effects in the classification of phases of matter poses a formidable challenge in condensed-matter physics. Such many-body effects are typically induced by inter-particle interactions involving an action at a distance, such as the Coulomb interaction between electrons in a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase. In this work, we show that similar phenomena also occur in certain relativistic theories with interactions mediated by gauge bosons, and constrained by gauge symmetry. In particular, we introduce a variant of the Schwinger model or quantum electrodynamics (QED) in $1+1$ dimensions on an interval, which displays dynamical edge states localized on the boundary. We show that the system hosts SPT phases with a dynamical contribution to the vacuum $\ensuremath{\theta}$-angle from edge states, leading to a new type of topological QED in $1+1$ dimensions. The resulting system displays an SPT phase which can be viewed as a correlated version of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger topological insulator for polyacetylene due to nonzero gauge couplings. We use bosonization and density-matrix renormalization group techniques to reveal the detailed phase diagram, which can further be explored in experiments of ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices.

Thouless Pumps and Bulk-Boundary Correspondence in Higher-Order Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases

Julian F. Wienand, Friederike Horn, Monika Aidelsburger +2 more

The bulk-boundary correspondence relates quantized edge states to bulk topological invariants in topological phases of matter. In one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological systems, quantized topological Thouless pumps directly reveal this principle and provide a sound mathematical foundation. Symmetry-protected higher-order topological phases of matter (HOSPTs) also feature a bulk-boundary correspondence, but its connection to quantized charge transport remains elusive. Here, we show that quantized Thouless pumps connecting C_{4}-symmetric HOSPTs can be described by a tuple of four Chern numbers that measure quantized bulk charge transport in a direction-dependent fashion. Moreover, this tuple of Chern numbers allows to predict the sign and value of fractional corner charges in the HOSPTs. We show that the topologically nontrivial phase can be characterized by both quadrupole and dipole configurations, shedding new light on current debates about the multipole nature of the HOSPT bulk. By employing corner-periodic boundary conditions, we generalize Restas's theory to HOSPTs. Our approach provides a simple framework for understanding topological invariants of general HOSPTs and paves the way for an in-depth description of future dynamical experiments.
