Bosonization of Majorana modes and edge states

Abstract

We present a bosonization procedure, which replaces fermions with generalized spin variables subject to local constraints. It requires that the number of Majorana modes per lattice site matches the coordination number modulo two. If this condition is not obeyed, then bosonization introduces additional fermionic excitations not present in the original model. In the case of one Majorana mode per site on a honeycomb lattice, we recover a sector of Kitaev's model. We discuss also decagonal and rectangular geometries and present bosonization of the Hubbard model. For geometries with a boundary we find that certain fermionic edge modes naturally emerge. They are of different nature than edge modes encountered in topological phases of matter. Euclidean representation for the unconstrained version of a spin system of the type arising in our construction is derived and briefly studied by computing some exact averages for small volumes.

Bosonization of Majorana modes in arbitrary geometries

Arkadiusz Bochniak, Błażej Ruba

We briefly summarize the main results from [25] which extend the ones from [17,18]. The bosonization method based on the properties of Clifford algebras is presented, together with the illustrating examples: system of Majorana fermions on honeycomb lattice and its relation to Kitaev's model, and the Hubbard model on rectangular lattices. The role of bundaries together with the presence of Majorana edge modes are discussed.

Ising anyons in frustration-free Majorana-dimer models

Brayden Ware, Jun Ho Son, Meng Cheng +3 more

Dimer models have long been a fruitful playground for understanding topological physics. Here, we introduce a class, termed Majorana-dimer models, wherein bosonic dimers are decorated with pairs of Majorana modes. We find that the simplest examples of such systems realize an intriguing, intrinsically fermionic phase of matter that can be viewed as the product of a chiral Ising theory, which hosts deconfined non-Abelian quasiparticles, and a topological ${p}_{x}\ensuremath{-}i{p}_{y}$ superconductor. While the bulk anyons are described by a single copy of the Ising theory, the edge remains fully gapped. Consequently, this phase can arise in exactly solvable, frustration-free models. We describe two parent Hamiltonians: one generalizes the well-known dimer model on the triangular lattice, while the other is most naturally understood as a model of decorated fluctuating loops on a honeycomb lattice. Using modular transformations, we show that the ground-state manifold of the latter model unambiguously exhibits all properties of the $\text{Ising}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}({p}_{x}\ensuremath{-}i{p}_{y})$ theory. We also discuss generalizations with more than one Majorana mode per site, which realize phases related to Kitaev's 16-fold way in a similar fashion.

Majorana-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

Chengshu Li, Marcel Franz

Phase diagram of a Hubbard model for Majorana fermions on the honeycomb lattice is explored using a combination of field theory, renormalization group, and mean-field arguments, as well as exact numerical diagonalization. Unlike the previously studied versions of the model we find that even weak interactions break symmetries and lead to interesting topological phases. We establish two topologically nontrivial phases at weak coupling, one gapped with chiral edge modes and the other gapless with antichiral edge modes. At strong coupling a mapping onto a novel frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ model suggests a highly entangled spin liquid ground state.

Exact chiral-spin-liquid state in a Kitaev-type spin model

Jianlong Fu

We study a frustrated two-dimensional lattice spin model with Kitaev-type interaction. The lattice is obtained from the honeycomb lattice by replacing half of its sites with triangles. Using the SO(3) Majorana representation of spin, the model is exactly mapped into a ${Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory of complex fermions with standard Gauss law constraint. We show that the ground state of the model is a chiral spin liquid, and it has gapless excitations. The Chern number of the ground state is $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, implying the existence of a chiral edge mode. The vortex excitation of the model is bound with a Majorana zero mode, such mode behaves as non-Abelian anyons.

Wegner's Ising gauge spins versus Kitaev's Majorana partons: Mapping and application to anisotropic confinement in spin-orbital liquids

Urban F. P. Seifert, Sergej Moroz

Emergent gauge theories take a prominent role in the description of quantum matter, supporting deconfined phases with topological order and fractionalized excitations. A common construction of \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 lattice gauge theories, first introduced by Wegner, involves Ising gauge spins placed on links and subject to a discrete \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 Gauss law constraint. As shown by Kitaev, \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 lattice gauge theories also emerge in the exact solution of certain spin systems with bond-dependent interactions. In this context, the \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 gauge field is constructed from Majorana fermions, with gauge constraints given by the parity of Majorana fermions on each site. In this work, we provide an explicit Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps between these two formulations on the square lattice, where the Kitaev-type gauge theory emerges as the exact solution of a spin-orbital (Kugel-Khomskii) Hamiltonian. We then apply our mapping to study local perturbations to the spin-orbital Hamiltonian, which correspond to anisotropic interactions between electric-field variables in the \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 gauge theory. These are shown to induce anisotropic confinement that is characterized by emergence of weakly-coupled one-dimensional spin chains. We study the nature of these phases and corresponding confinement transitions in both absence and presence of itinerant fermionic matter degrees of freedom. Finally, we discuss how our mapping can be applied to the Kitaev spin-1/2 model on the honeycomb lattice.

Majorana modes meet fractional fermions in one dimension

Dan-Bo Zhang, Qiang-Hua Wang, Z. D. Wang

Majorana modes and fractional fermions are two types of edge zero modes appearing separately in topological superconductors and dimerized chains. Here we reveal how to harvest both types of edge modes simultaneously in an exotic chain. Such modes are naturally spin-charge separated, and are protected by the inversion and spin-parity symmetries. We construct a lattice model to illustrate the nature of these edge modes, utilizing fermionic functional renormalization group, mean-field theory and bosonization. We also elucidate that the four-fold degenerate ground states with edge-spinons in the Haldane phase of spin-$1$ chain may be reinterpreted as our spin-charge separated edge modes in an equivalent spin-$1/2$ fermionic model.
