Thermalization in Kitaev’s quantum double models via tensor network techniques

Abstract

Abstract We show that every ergodic Davies generator associated to any 2D Kitaev’s quantum double model has a nonvanishing spectral gap in the thermodynamic limit. This validates rigorously the extended belief that those models are useless as self-correcting quantum memories, even in the non-abelian case. The proof uses recent ideas and results regarding the characterization of the spectral gap for parent Hamiltonians associated to Projected Entangled Pair States in terms of a bulk-boundary correspondence.

Spectral Gap Bounds for Quantum Markov Semigroups via Correlation Decay

Lucia, Angelo, David Pérez-Garcı́a, Antonio Pérez

Starting from an arbitrary full-rank state of a lattice quantum spin system, we define a "canonical purified Hamiltonian" and characterize its spectral gap in terms of a spatial mixing condition (or correlation decay) of the state. When the state considered is a Gibbs state of a local, commuting Hamiltonian at positive temperature, we show that the spectral gap of the canonical purified Hamiltonian provides a lower bound to the spectral gap of a large class of reversible generators of quantum Markov semigroup, including local and ergodic Davies generators. As an application of our construction, we show that the mixing condition is always satisfied for any finite-range 1D model, as well as by Kitaev's quantum double models.

Spectral Gap of the Davies Generator for the Mean-Field Heisenberg Model

Joao Basso, Thiago Bergamaschi, Lin Lin +2 more

The mean-field Heisenberg ferromagnet is a quantum spin model on the complete graph with isotropic spin-1/2 interactions. This non-commuting Hamiltonian is permutation and $\mathsf{SU}(2)$ invariant, and its Gibbs states undergo an $\mathsf{SU}(2)$ symmetry breaking phase transition at inverse temperature $β=2$. We consider the associated Davies generator, a canonical model of open-system thermalization, and prove tight asymptotic estimates for its spectral gap at all noncritical temperatures. For fixed $β<2$, the gap as a function of number of qubits $n$ is $Θ(1)$, while for fixed $β>2$ the gap is $Θ(n^{-1})$. The matching upper bound of the spectral gap is witnessed by the total magnetization order parameter, suggesting that the low-temperature ($β>2$) slowdown is associated with broken continuous symmetry. Two key ingredients in our approach are a comparison argument, which introduces auxiliary generators to bound dissipation on nontrivial representations of the symmetry groups $\mathsf{SU}(2)$ and $\mathsf{S}_n$, and a decomposition of the space of observables into spherical tensor operators to reveal a form of monotonicity.

Double Localization for Quantum Gibbs Sampler Gaps: From an Abstract Framework to Finite-Group Models

Ryu Hayakawa, Angus Southwell, Caesnan M. G. Leditto +2 more

We introduce double localization, a framework for proving spectral gaps of quantum Gibbs samplers through two complementary operations: geometric localization, which selects updates supported in small spatial regions, and interface localization, which focuses on a model-defined subspace of observables while remaining geometrically global. Our abstract gap theorem combines a global bound on this subspace, called the interface, with local quantum gap estimates under quantitative coupling and geometric assembly conditions. The resulting explicit lower bound controls the gap of the full dynamics without requiring the interface to be invariant under the generator. This separation allows global estimates, including classical comparison, to be combined with local control of the remaining quantum directions. We apply the framework to Hamiltonians built from the vertex terms of Kitaev's finite-group quantum double construction, without plaquette terms, on finite simple three-regular graphs of girth at least six. For the specified local Davies dynamics, we prove an unconditional spectral-gap lower bound by a positive constant independent of graph size for every fixed nontrivial finite group and each fixed inverse temperature $β$ with $0\leβJ<\log(5/3)$, where $J>0$ is the coupling strength. For the smallest non-Abelian group $S_3$, double localization yields a positive lower bound uniform in both graph size and the entire interval $0\leβJ\le\log 3$, providing a guarantee that does not follow directly from existing results. This demonstrates how model-specific finite calculations can extend spectral-gap guarantees for the full quantum dynamics.

Boundary algebras of the Kitaev quantum double model

Chian Yeong Chuah, Brett Hungar, Kyle Kawagoe +4 more

The recent article by Jones et al. [arXiv:2307.12552 (2023)] gave local topological order (LTO) axioms for a quantum spin system, showed they held in Kitaev’s Toric Code and in Levin-Wen string net models, and gave a bulk boundary correspondence to describe bulk excitations in terms of the boundary net of algebras. In this article, we prove the LTO axioms for Kitaev’s Quantum Double model for a finite group G. We identify the boundary nets of algebras with fusion categorical nets associated to (Hilb(G),C[G]) or (Rep(G),CG) depending on whether the boundary cut is rough or smooth, respectively. This allows us to make connections to the work of Ogata [Ann. Henri Poincaré 25, 2353–2387 (2024)] on the type of the cone von Neumann algebras in the algebraic quantum field theory approach to topological superselection sectors. We show that the boundary algebras can also be calculated from a trivial G-symmetry protected topological phase (G-SPT), and that the gauging map preserves the boundary algebras. Finally, we compute the boundary algebras for the (3 + 1)D Quantum Double model associated to an Abelian group.

Entanglement spectrum and boundary theories with projected entangled-pair states

J. I. Cirac, Didier Poilblanc, Norbert Schuch +1 more

In many physical scenarios, close relations between the bulk properties of quantum systems and theories associated with their boundaries have been observed. In this work, we provide an exact duality mapping between the bulk of a quantum spin system and its boundary using projected entangled-pair states. This duality associates to every region a Hamiltonian on its boundary, in such a way that the entanglement spectrum of the bulk corresponds to the excitation spectrum of the boundary Hamiltonian. We study various specific models: a deformed AKLT model [I. Affleck, T. Kennedy, E. H. Lieb, and H. Tasaki, Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 799 (1987)], an Ising-type model [F. Verstraete, M. M. Wolf, D. Perez-Garcia, and J. I. Cirac, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 220601 (2006)], and Kitaev's toric code [A. Kitaev, Ann. Phys. 303, 2 (2003)], both in finite ladders and in infinite square lattices. In the second case, some of those models display quantum phase transitions. We find that a gapped bulk phase with local order corresponds to a boundary Hamiltonian with local interactions, whereas critical behavior in the bulk is reflected on a diverging interaction length of the boundary Hamiltonian. Furthermore, topologically ordered states yield nonlocal Hamiltonians. Because our duality also associates a boundary operator to any operator in the bulk, it in fact provides a full holographic framework for the study of quantum many-body systems via their boundary.

Boundary algebras of the Kitaev Quantum Double model

The recent article [arXiv:2307.12552] gave local topological order (LTO) axioms for a quantum spin system, showed they held in Kitaev's Toric Code and in Levin-Wen string net models, and gave a bulk boundary correspondence to describe bulk excitations in terms of the boundary net of algebras. In this article, we prove the LTO axioms for Kitaev's Quantum Double model for a finite group $G$. We identify the boundary nets of algebras with fusion categorical nets associated to $(\mathsf{Hilb}(G),\mathbb{C}[G])$ or $(\mathsf{Rep}(G),\mathbb{C}^G)$ depending on whether the boundary cut is rough or smooth respectively. This allows us to make connections to work of Ogata on the type of the cone von Neumann algebras in the algebraic quantum field theory approach to topological superselection sectors. We show that the boundary algebras can also be calculated from a trivial $G$-symmetry protected topological phase ($G$-SPT), and that the gauging map preserves the boundary algebras. Finally, we compute the boundary algebras for the (3+1)D Quantum Double model associated to an abelian group.
