Abstract

We examine the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii lattice at zero temperature in the presence of uncorrelated disorder. We obtain analytical expressions for the thermodynamic properties of the ground state field and compare them with numerical simulations both in the low- and high-density regimes. We analyze weak excitations above the ground state and compute the localization properties of Bogoliubov--de Gennes modes. In the long-wavelength limit, these modes delocalize in accordance with the extended nature of the ground state. For high densities, we observe and derive a divergence of their localization length at finite energy due to an effective correlated disorder induced by the weak ground state field fluctuations. We derive effective high-density field equations for the excitations and generalize to higher dimensions.

Localization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in interacting Bose gases with correlated disorder

Pierre Lugan, Laurent Sanchez-Palencia

We study the Anderson localization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles (elementary many-body excitations) in a weakly interacting Bose gas of chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$ subjected to a disordered potential $V$. We introduce a general mapping (valid for weak inhomogeneous potentials in any dimension) of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations onto a single-particle Schr\"odinger-like equation with an effective potential. For disordered potentials, the Schr\"odinger-like equation accounts for the scattering and localization properties of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles. We derive analytically the localization lengths for correlated disordered potentials in the one-dimensional geometry. Our approach relies on a perturbative expansion in $V/\ensuremath{\mu}$, which we develop up to third order, and we discuss the impact of the various perturbation orders. Our predictions are shown to be in very good agreement with direct numerical calculations. We identify different localization regimes: For low energy, the effective disordered potential exhibits a strong screening by the quasicondensate density background, and localization is suppressed. For high-energy excitations, the effective disordered potential reduces to the bare disordered potential, and the localization properties of quasiparticles are the same as for free particles. The maximum of localization is found at intermediate energy when the quasicondensate healing length is of the order of the disorder correlation length. Possible extensions of our work to higher dimensions are also discussed.

Anderson localization of elementary excitations in disordered binary Bose mixtures: Effects of the Lee-Huang-Yang quantum and thermal corrections

Zohra Mehri, Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We investigate analytically and numerically the Anderson localization of quasiparticles in binary Bose mixtures in the presence of the Lee-Huang-Yang quantum and thermal corrections subjected to correlated disordered potentials. We calculate the density profiles, the Bogoliubov quasiparticles modes, and the localization length in both the mixture and droplet phases. We show that for one-dimensional speckle potentials, the peculiar interplay of disorder and the Lee-Huang-Yang fluctuations may enhance localization in one component while inducing delocalization in the other. Our results reveal also that thermal fluctuations lead to the emergence of two and multiple localization maxima. In the droplet state, our findings uncover that the Anderson localization of quasiparticles is weak in the flat-top region since its excitation modes are restricted to those below the particle-emission threshold.

A numerical investigation of Anderson localization in weakly interacting Bose gases

Crystal Ugarte

The ground state of a quantum system is the minimizer of the total energy of that system. The aim of this thesis is to present and numerically solve the Gross-Pitaevskii eigenvalue problem (GPE) as a physical model for the formation of ground states of dilute Bose gases at ultra-low temperatures in a disordered potential. The first part of the report introduces the quantum mechanical phenomenon that arises at ground states of the Bose gases; the Anderson localization, and presents the nonlinear eigenvalue problem and the finite element method (FEM) used to discretize the GPE. The numerical method used to solve the eigenvalue problem for the smallest eigenvalue is called the inverse power iteration method, which is presented and explained. In the second part of the report, the smallest eigenvalue of a linear Schrödinger equation is compared with the numerically computed smallest eigenvalue (ground state) in order to evaluate the accuracy of a linear numerical scheme constructed as first step for numerically solving the non-linear problem. In the next part of the report, the numerical methods are implemented to solve for the eigenvalue and eigenfunction of the (non-linear) GPE at ground state (smallest eigenvalue). The mathematical expression for the quantum energy and smallest eigenvalue of the non-linear system are presented in the report. The methods used to solve the GPE are the FEM and inverse power iteration method and different instances of the Anderson localization are produced. The study shows that the error of the smallest eigenvalue approximation for the linear case without disorder is satisfying when using FEM and Power iteration method. The accuracy of the approximation obtained for the linear case without disorder is satisfying, even for a low numbers of iterations. The methods require many more iterations for solving the GPE with a strong disorder. On the other hand, pronounced instances of Anderson localizations are produced in a certain scaling regime. The study shows that the GPE indeed works well as a physical model for the Anderson localization.

Bogoliubov excitations of disordered Bose-Einstein condensates

Christopher Gaul, Cord Axel Müller

We describe repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensates in spatially correlated disorder potentials of arbitrary dimension. The first effect of disorder is to deform the mean-field condensate. The second is that the quantum excitation spectrum and condensate population are affected. By a saddle-point expansion of the many-body Hamiltonian around the deformed mean-field ground state, we derive the fundamental quadratic Hamiltonian of quantum fluctuations. Importantly, a basis is used such that excitations are orthogonal to the deformed condensate. Via Bogoliubov-Nambu perturbation theory, we compute the effective excitation dispersion, including mean free paths and localization lengths. Corrections to the speed of sound and average density of states are calculated, due to correlated disorder in arbitrary dimensions, extending to the case of weak lattice potentials.

Mean-field phase diagram of the one-dimensional Bose gas in a disorder potential

Luca Fontanesi, Michiel Wouters, Vincenzo Savona

We study the quantum phase transition of the 1D weakly interacting Bose gas in the presence of disorder. We characterize the phase transition as a function of disorder and interaction strengths, by inspecting the long-range behavior of the one-body density matrix as well as the drop in the superfluid fraction. We focus on the properties of the low-energy Bogoliubov excitations that drive the phase transition and find that the transition to the insulator state is marked by a diverging density of states and a localization length that diverges as a power-law with power $1$. We draw the phase diagram and we observe that the boundary between the superfluid and the insulator phase is characterized by two different algebraic relations. These can be explained analytically by considering the limiting cases of zero and infinite disorder correlation length.
