Extraction of Product and Higher Moment Weak Values: Applications in Quantum State Reconstruction

Sahil, S Sohail, Subhrajit Modak +2 more

Weak measurements introduced by Aharonov, Albert and Vaidman (AAV) can provide informations about the system with minimal back action. Weak values of product observables (commuting) or higher moments of an observable are informationally important in the sense that they are useful to resolve some paradoxes, realize strange quantum effects, construct density matrices, etc. In this work, we show that it is possible to access the higher moment weak values of an observable using weak values of that observable with pairwise orthogonal post-selections. Although the higher moment weak values of an observable are inaccessible with Gaussian pointer states, our method allows any pointer state. We have calculated product weak values in a bipartite system for any given pure and mixed pre selected states. Such product weak values can be obtained using only the measurements of local weak values (which are defined as single system weak values in a multi-partite system). As an application, we use higher moment weak values and product weak values to reconstruct unknown quantum states of single and bipartite systems, respectively. Robustness of our method which occurs due to inappropriate choices of quantum observables and noisy post-selections is also discussed here. Our method can easily be generalized to the multi-partite systems.

Experimental extraction of nonlocal weak values for demonstrating the failure of a product rule

Xiao-Ye Xu, Wei-Wei Pan, Yaron Kedem +7 more

We experimentally demonstrate an alternative method for measuring nonlocal weak values in linear optics, avoiding the use of second-order interaction. The method is based on the concept of modular values. The paths of two photons, initialized in hyperentangled states, are adopted as the meter with the polarization acting as the system. The modular values are read out through the reconstructed final states of the meter. The weak value of nonlocal observables is given through its connection to the modular value. Comparing the weak values of local and nonlocal observables, we demonstrate the failure of product rules for an entangled system. Our results significantly simplify the task of measuring nonlocal weak values and will play an important role in the application of weak measurement.

Weak Measurements with Orbital-Angular-Momentum Pointer States

Graciana Puentes, Nathaniel Hermosa, Juan P. Torres

Weak measurements are a unique tool for accessing information about weakly interacting quantum systems with minimal back action. Joint weak measurements of single-particle operators with pointer states characterized by a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution can provide, in turn, key information about quantum correlations that can be relevant for quantum information applications. Here we demonstrate that by employing two-dimensional pointer states endowed with orbital angular momentum (OAM), it is possible to extract weak values of the higher order moments of single-particle operators, an inaccessible quantity with Gaussian pointer states only. We provide a specific example that illustrates the advantages of our method both in terms of signal enhancement and information retrieval.
