Modular Operator for Null Plane Algebras in Free Fields

Abstract

We consider the algebras generated by observables in quantum field theory localized in regions in the null plane. For a scalar free field theory, we show that the one-particle structure can be decomposed into a continuous direct integral of lightlike fibres and the modular operator decomposes accordingly. This implies that a certain form of QNEC is valid in free fields involving the causal completions of half-spaces on the null plane (null cuts). We also compute the relative entropy of null cut algebras with respect to the vacuum and some coherent states.

Local modular Hamiltonians from the quantum null energy condition

Jason Koeller, Stefan Leichenauer, Adam Levine +1 more

The vacuum modular Hamiltonian $K$ of the Rindler wedge in any relativistic quantum field theory is given by the boost generator. Here we investigate the modular Hamiltonian for more general half-spaces which are bounded by an arbitrary smooth cut of a null plane. We derive a formula for the second derivative of the modular Hamiltonian with respect to the coordinates of the cut which schematically reads ${K}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}={T}_{vv}$. This formula can be integrated twice to obtain a simple expression for the modular Hamiltonian. The result naturally generalizes the standard expression for the Rindler modular Hamiltonian to this larger class of regions. Our primary assumptions are the quantum null energy condition---an inequality between the second derivative of the von Neumann entropy of a region and the stress tensor---and its saturation in the vacuum for these regions. We discuss the validity of these assumptions in free theories and holographic theories to all orders in $1/N$.

Modular Hamiltonians on the null plane and the Markov property of the vacuum state

Horacio Casini, Eduardo Testé, Gonzalo Torroba

Abstract We compute the modular Hamiltonians of regions having the future horizon lying on a null plane. For a CFT this is equivalent to regions with a boundary of arbitrary shape lying on the null cone. These Hamiltonians have a local expression on the horizon formed by integrals of the stress tensor. We prove this result in two different ways, and show that the modular Hamiltonians of these regions form an infinite dimensional Lie algebra. The corresponding group of unitary transformations moves the fields on the null surface locally along the null generators with arbitrary null line dependent velocities, but act non-locally outside the null plane. We regain this result in greater generality using more abstract tools on the algebraic quantum field theory. Finally, we show that modular Hamiltonians on the null surface satisfy a Markov property that leads to the saturation of the strong sub-additive inequality for the entropies and to the strong super-additivity of the relative entropy.

Non-local modular flows across deformed null-cuts

Guan-Cheng Lu, Huajia Wang

A bstract Modular flows probe important aspects of the entanglement structures, especially those of QFTs, in a dynamical framework. Despite the expected non-local nature in the general cases, the majority of explicitly understood examples feature local space-time trajectories under modular flows. In this work, we study a particular class of non-local modular flows. They are associated with the relativistic vacuum state and sub-regions whose boundaries lie on a planar null-surface. They satisfy a remarkable algebraic property known as the half-sided modular inclusion, and as a result the modular Hamiltonians are exactly known in terms of the stress tensor operators. To be explicit, we focus on the simplest QFT of a massive or massless free scalar in 1 + 2 dimensions. We obtain explicit expressions for the generators. They can be separated into a sum of local and non-local terms showing certain universal pattern. The preservation of von Neumann algebra under modular flow works in a subtle way for the non-local terms. We derive a differential-integral equation for the finite modular flow, which can be analyzed in perturbation theory of small distance deviating from the entanglement boundary, and re-summation can be performed in appropriate limits. Comparison with the general expectation of modular flows in such limits are discussed.

The massive modular Hamiltonian

Roberto Longo, Gerardo Morsella

We compute the vacuum local modular Hamiltonian associated with a space ball region in the free scalar massive Quantum Field Theory. We give an explicit expression on the one particle Hilbert space in terms of the massive Legendre differential operator and the Green integral for the Helmholtz operator. The quadratic form of the massive modular Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of an integral of the energy density with parabolic distribution and of a Yukawa potential, that here appears intrinsically. We then get the formula for the local entropy of a Klein-Gordon wave packet. This gives the vacuum relative entropy of a coherent state on the double cone von Neumann algebras associated with the free scalar QFT. Among other points, we have a criterion for a Bogoliubov automorphism to be locally weakly inner and we provide the passivity characterisation of the modular Hamiltonian within the standard subspace set up.

Endpoint contributions to excited-state modular Hamiltonians

Daniel Kabat, Gilad Lifschytz, Phuc Nguyen +1 more

Abstract We compute modular Hamiltonians for excited states obtained by perturbing the vacuum with a unitary operator. We use operator methods and work to first order in the strength of the perturbation. For the most part we divide space in half and focus on perturbations generated by integrating a local operator J over a null plane. Local operators with weight n ≥ 2 under vacuum modular flow produce an additional endpoint contribution to the modular Hamiltonian. Intuitively this is because operators with weight n ≥ 2 can move degrees of freedom from a region to its complement. The endpoint contribution is an integral of J over a null plane. We show this in detail for stress tensor perturbations in two dimensions, where the result can be verified by a conformal transformation, and for scalar perturbations in a CFT. This lets us conjecture a general form for the endpoint contribution that applies to any field theory divided into half-spaces.

Modular Self-Duality, Symmetrized Relative Entropy, and Bogoliubov--Kubo--Mori Susceptibility in Quantum Field Theory

Rupak Chatterjee

We develop an operator-algebraic framework for modular self-duality, symmetrized relative entropy, and Bogoliubov--Kubo--Mori (BKM) susceptibility of local states in quantum field theory. In finite dimensions, modular self-duality singles out fixed points at which a state coincides with its modularly reflected partner. At such points, the natural comparison functional is the symmetrized Umegaki relative entropy. It vanishes at coincidence, and its Hessian is governed by the BKM quantum Fisher information along the reflected tangent direction. We then extend this fixed-point construction to the local type~III von Neumann algebras that arise in quantum field theory. Here, a local state is compared with the modular pullback of its commutant restriction, and the intrinsic comparison functional is the symmetrized Araki relative entropy. For sufficiently regular state deformations, the fixed-localization Hessian at the self-dual point defines a type~III BKM susceptibility. This coefficient is obtained by evaluating the BKM bilinear form on the tangent selected by the modular pairing. Exact coherent-state realizations are obtained for the free scalar field on wedge algebras and for the chiral $U(1)$ current on half-line algebras. In both examples, the comparison functional is exactly quadratic in the deformation parameter, and the susceptibility coefficients admit explicit boost-energy, stress-tensor, or half-line integral representations. We also apply the construction to a ball-shaped boundary region in the vacuum state of a conformal field theory with a semiclassical anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravitational dual. For linear bulk coherent excitations in an exact complementary-recovery model of this sector, bulk--boundary modular intertwining identifies the modular partner with the AdS--Rindler-reflected coherent state, and the symmetrized relative entropy is exactly quadratic.
