Abstract

Describing properties of a strongly interacting quantum many-body system poses a serious challenge both for theory and experiment. In this work, we study excitations of one-dimensional repulsive Bose gas for arbitrary interaction strength using a hydrodynamic approach. We use linearization to study particle (type-I) excitations and numerical minimization to study hole (type-II) excitations. We observe a good agreement between our approach and exact solutions of the Lieb-Liniger model for the particle modes and discrepancies for the hole modes. Therefore, the hydrodynamical equations find to be useful for long-wave structures like phonons and of a limited range of applicability for short-wave ones like narrow solitons. We discuss potential further applications of the method.

Collective modes of a trapped Lieb-Liniger gas: a hydrodynamic approach

Jean-Noël Fuchs, X. Leyronas, R. Combescot

We consider a trapped repulsive one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas at very low temperature. In order to study the collective modes of this strongly interacting system, we use a hydrodynamic approach, where the gas is locally described by the Lieb-Liniger model of bosons interacting via a repulsive delta potential. Solving the corresponding linearized hydrodynamic equations, we obtain the collective modes and concentrate more specifically on the lowest compressional mode. This is done by finding models, approaching very closely the exact equation of stae of the gas, for which the linearized hydrodynamic equations are exactly solvable. Results are in excellent agreement with those of the sum rule approach of Menotti and Stringari.

Solitons in a One-Dimensional Bose System with the Repulsive Delta-Function Interaction

M. Ishikawa, Hajime Takayama

Lieb's type II excitation, derived exactly by means of a Bethe ansatz, in a one-dimensional Bose system with the repulsive delta-function interaction is identified with the soliton mode, which is a solution of the Pitaevskii-Gross (or nonlinear Schrödinger) equation for the corresponding Bose field.

Quasi-solitons of the 1D Bose gas at arbitrary-strength contact repulsion

Anahita Sarvi, Cesare Vianello, Jean-Sébastien Caux

Harnessing integrability at arbitrary interaction strength, we build long-lived and spatially localized soliton-like excitations in the 1D Bose gas with contact repulsion (Lieb-Liniger model). We show how these density profiles, built from selective superpositions of multi-hole eigenstates, display long lifetimes tunable through parameters like dispersion width and number of holes. We further illustrate a scaling protocol that in principle enables unbounded increase in lifetimes in the thermodynamic limit. Our results showcase classical-like excitations originating from unitary quantum dynamics, away from the semi-classical regime, and in regions where interactions cannot be treated perturbatively.

Quantum dark solitons in the 1D Bose gas and the superfluid velocity

Jun Sato, Rina Kanamoto, Eriko Kaminishi +1 more

We give explicit connections of quantum one-hole excited states to classical solitons for the one-dimensional Bose gas with repulsive short-range interactions. We call the quantum states connected to classical solitons the quantum soliton states. We show that the matrix element of the canonical field operator between quantum soliton states with $N-1$ and $N$ particles is given by a dark soliton of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the weak coupling case. We suggest that the matrix element corresponds to the order parameter of BEC in the quantum soliton state. The result should be useful in the study of many-body effects in Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluids. For instance, we derive the superfluid velocity for a quantum soliton state.

Quantum Dark Solitons in the 1D Bose Gas: From Single to Double Dark-Solitons

Kayo Kinjo, Eriko Kaminishi, Takashi Mori +3 more

We study quantum double dark-solitons, which give pairs of notches in the density profiles, by constructing corresponding quantum states in the Lieb–Liniger model for the one-dimensional Bose gas. Here, we expect that the Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation should play a central role in the long distance mean-field behavior of the 1D Bose gas. We first introduce novel quantum states of a single dark soliton with a nonzero winding number. We show them by exactly evaluating not only the density profile but also the profiles of the square amplitude and phase of the matrix element of the field operator between the N-particle and (N−1)-particle states. For elliptic double dark-solitons, the density and phase profiles of the corresponding states almost perfectly agree with those of the classical solutions, respectively, in the weak coupling regime. We then show that the scheme of the mean-field product state is quite effective for the quantum states of double dark solitons. Assigning the ideal Gaussian weights to a sum of the excited states with two particle-hole excitations, we obtain double dark-solitons of distinct narrow notches with different depths. We suggest that the mean-field product state should be well approximated by the ideal Gaussian weighted sum of the low excited states with a pair of particle-hole excitations. The results of double dark-solitons should be fundamental and useful for constructing quantum multiple dark-solitons.

Correspondence between dark solitons and the type II excitations of the Lieb-Liniger model

Tomasz Karpiuk, Tomasz Sowiński, Mariusz Gajda +2 more

A one-dimensional model of bosons with repulsive short-range interactions, solved analytically by Lieb and Liniger many years ago, predicts the existence of two branches of elementary excitations. One of them represents Bogoliubov phonons; the other, as suggested by some authors, might be related to dark solitons. On the other hand, it has been already demonstrated within the framework of the classical field approximation that a quasi-one-dimensional interacting Bose gas at equilibrium exhibits excitations which are phonons and dark solitons. By showing that for lower temperatures statistical distributions of dark solitons obtained within the classical field approximation are well represented by the distributions of quasiparticles of the second kind derived from fully quantum description, we demonstrate that type II excitations in the Lieb-Liniger model are, indeed, quantum solitons.
