Abstract

Subdominant contributions to the entanglement entropy of quantum fields include logarithmic corrections to the area law characterized by universal coefficients that are independent of the ultraviolet regulator and capture detailed information on the geometry around the entangling surface. We determine two universal coefficients of the entanglement entropy for a massive scalar field in a static closed universe $\mathbb{R}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{S}}^{3}$ perturbatively and verify the results numerically. The first coefficient describes a well-known generic correction to the area law independent of the geometry of the entangling surface and background. The second coefficient describes a curvature-dependent universal term with a nontrivial dependence on the intrinsic and extrinsic geometries of the entangling surface and curvature of the background. The numerical calculations confirm the analytical results to a high accuracy. The first and second universal coefficients are determined numerically with a relative error with respect to the analytical values of the orders ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$, respectively.

Entanglement Entropy in the O(N) Model

Ossama Algayal

Entanglement is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics and plays an important role in characterizing many-body systems and quantum phase transitions. A quantitative measure of quantum correlations between subsystems is entanglement entropy. In this thesis, we study the entanglement entropy of an interacting quantum field theory, the O(N) model. In local quantum field theories, the leading-order contribution in the scaling of entanglement entropy obeys an area law. This dominant term is governed by short-distance physics near the entangling surface and depends on the ultraviolet regularization, making it non-universal. Beyond this lead- ing scaling behavior, entanglement entropy can contain subleading universal contributions, which encode intrinsic information about the underlying quantum field theory. In this thesis, we calculate one such universal term: the correlation length coefficient r, which appears as a correction to the entanglement entropy evaluated slightly away from the quantum critical point. The analysis is carried out in D = 2 + 1 spacetime dimensions for an infinite cylindrical geometry. We study the model in the vicinity of criticality using the large-N expansion, which enables controlled analytical calculations. Our main result is that the coefficient r scales linearly with the number of field components N . This behavior is consistent with the interpretation of r as a universal quantity associated with the degrees of freedom of the theory. The calculation is based on the replica method and renormalization group arguments, which are presented in detail. Finally, we discuss the physical meaning of the result and possible methods for verifying it, and we review related results for the O(N) model in different geometries.

Entanglement entropy of a scalar field in anti-de Sitter space

Konstantinos Boutivas, Dimitrios Katsinis, Ioannis Papadimitriou +2 more

A bstract We study the entanglement entropy of a free massive scalar field at its ground state in (3 + 1)-dimensional AdS space in global coordinates. We consider spherical entangling surfaces centered at the origin of AdS. We determine the structure of the UV-divergent terms in the entanglement entropy and compute the numerical values of the respective coefficients. We confirm the connection between the coefficient of the logarithmic term and the conformal anomaly.

An inverse mass expansion for entanglement entropy in free massive scalar field theory

Dimitrios Katsinis, Georgios Pastras

We extend the entanglement entropy calculation performed in the seminal paper by Srednicki (Phys Rev Lett 71:666, 1993) for free real massive scalar field theories in $$1+1$$ 1 + 1 , $$2+1$$ 2 + 1 and $$3+1$$ 3 + 1 dimensions. We show that the inverse of the scalar field mass can be used as an expansion parameter for a perturbative calculation of the entanglement entropy. We perform the calculation for the ground state of the system and for a spherical entangling surface at third order in the inverse mass expansion. The calculated entanglement entropy contains a leading area law term, as well as subleading terms that depend on the regularization scheme, as expected. Universal terms are non-perturbative effects in this approach. Interestingly, this perturbative expansion can be used to approximate the coefficient of the area law term, even in the case of a massless scalar field in $$2+1$$ 2 + 1 and $$3+1$$ 3 + 1 dimensions. The presented method provides the spectrum of the reduced density matrix as an intermediate result, which is an important advantage in comparison to the replica trick approach. Our perturbative expansion underlines the relation between the area law and the locality of the underlying field theory.

Shape dependence of entanglement entropy in conformal field theories

Thomas Faulkner

Here, we study universal features in the shape dependence of entanglement entropy in the vacuum state of a conformal field theory (CFT) on R1,d--1. We consider the entanglement entropy across a deformed planar or spherical entangling surface in terms of a perturbative expansion in the infinitesimal shape deformation. In particular, we focus on the second order term in this expansion, known as the entanglement density. This quantity is known to be non-positive by the strong-subadditivity property. We also show from a purely field theory calculation that the non-local part of the entanglement density in any CFT is universal, and proportional to the coefficient CT appearing in the two-point function of stress tensors in that CFT. As applications of our result, we prove the conjectured universality of the corner term coefficient σ/CT=π2/24 in d = 3 CFTs, and the holographic Mezei formula for entanglement entropy across deformed spheres.

Entanglement entropy of singular surfaces under relevant deformations in holography

Mostafa Ghasemi, Shahrokh Parvizi

In the vacuum state of a CFT, the entanglement entropy of singular surfaces contains a logarithmic universal term which is only due to the singularity of the entangling surface. We consider the relevant perturbation of a three dimensional CFT for singular entangling surface. We observe that in addition to the universal term due to the entangling surface, there is a new logarithmic term which corresponds to a relevant perturbation of the conformal field theory with a coefficient depending on the scaling dimension of the relevant operator. We also find a new power law divergence in the holographic entanglement entropy. In addition, we study the effect of a relevant perturbation in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity for a singular entangling surface. Again a logarithmic term shows up. This new term is proportional to both the dimension of the relevant operator and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also introduce the renormalized entanglement entropy for a kink region which in the UV limit reduces to a universal positive finite term.

Entanglement on a sphere

Konstantinos Boutivas, Dimitrios Katsinis, Georgios Pastras +2 more

We study the entanglement entropy of a massive scalar field in the background of the Einstein universe. We determine numerically the structure of the UV-divergent terms. We study analytically the IR term that originates in the long-range correlations arising from the field zero mode on the sphere. We compare with previous results for a scalar field in a de Sitter or an anti–de Sitter background.
